I will save this thread ;D

BBer's are Athletes that choose not to play a sport, they choose to enter physique contests and be judged by their look and not athletic ability.

Now it's all cleared out :D

Question:  If weightlifting is a sport, why is bodybuilding not considered a sport?

Because bodybuilders are judged on how they look, not what they do.

But they have to "do" to get how they "look".

What they "do"is not what they are judged on, though. One of the "athletes" could hardly train, and yet still have a better physique than someone who trained much more intensely

Yeah and one sprinter could run more fast that the other with less training.

It's called genetics.

They don't have to do anything. Steroids alone with no training will result in muscular growth and a lot of bodybuilders use synthol and have calf and pec implants. Bodybuilding is not a sport and bodybuilders are not athletes.

what about figure skating then ?

They are also judged subjectively by how they present themselves on stage - or ice

Not a sport, not athletes.

There is no "skill" or "athletic ability" required in being a bodybuilder. Dedication  and genetics yes, but no skill required whatsoever.

I don't consider bycicling to be a sport either, extremely hard, extremely dedicated, probably the most challenging cardiovascular endurance test out there but...not a sport, because, all they do is sit on the bike and peddle.

The contest/ competition part isn't everything about what a bodybuilder/bodybuilding is. Not everyone has competing in mind, yet still are called bodybuilders and still think of themselves as bodybuilders. So this whole "it's a muscle pageant!" doesn't completely define what bodybuilding is to me.

Weightlifting is commonly referred to as sport. This is all that makes a bodybuilder to me, plus additional things like diet and dedication to health. No tanning, shaving, or oils are necessary.

Are you an athlete then? I don't think you are and I don't think any other bodybuilder or any other member of this forum is either.

Anyone remember the original "bodybuilding is a sport" thread.  I think it was like 23 pages of hate.

Because there is no scoreboard in bodybuilding.

Miss America contestants don't spend their lives in the gym lifting heavy weights every damn day.  When have you seen a Miss America contestant with a bodybuilders physique?   In all actuality the Miss America contest was a talent/brains/beauty contest.  They are given scholorships, modeling contracts and cash prizes.  Bodybuilding is a 24/7 lifestyle.  There is more to being a bodybuilder than being "rated" as how you look on stage.  Is that the end result?  Yes, but what goes into getting on that stage is what makes it a sport.

Someone quoted Ice Skaters.  Ice skating is considered a sport (even an Olympic Sport) yet what is rated during the competition is grace, style and strength, not the years of training it took to get them there.  What is the difference when a bodybuilder gets on the stage?  He/she too is rated for his grace, style and strength (posing/fitness routine) along with size, proportion and conditioning.
