Anyone think an UPPER weight limit would help the sport?
« on: July 18, 2006, 09:36:48 PM »
Bodybuilders ARE going to continue to get bigger and bigger there is no doubt about it.

The problem is that doesn't automatically equate to getting better and it definitely is NOT heathier lets face it... who can deny Flex Wheeler looked his best at around 225lbs?

Why not impose an UPPER weight limit for contests determined by factoring in both the athlete's height and somatotype (basically their natural body type and skeletal size... wrist size is always a good indicator of this)

If a guy has a small wrist his max weight allowed is lower than a guy with a big wrist who is the same height (think nasser versus flex) and therefore skeleton - other athropometrical measures could of course be used.

F1 racing had to reduce the size of the engines to make their sport safer maybe we should limit the bodyweight of some of these guys before they start dropping dead at 40 which is where we are heading...

If there was ever a weight limit, guys would just go to the extremes to get into condition and end up dropping dead backstage.

they'd know the limit a year before the show and could adjust easily.

i'm not talking about making ronnie come in at 240 but 265 maybe... that adjustment would mainly be a drug adjustment trust me he isn't 300 naturally.

Okay boys you think the sport is going be better when guys weigh 320lbs in 4-5 years time?

Disgusted, your buddy kamali has ruined his career by gaining too much weight and abusing GH and insulin.

Bigger isn't always better.

Samir Bannout won the olympia at one of his lightest professional bodyweights btw...

Flex and just about everyone else looked their best when they weren't at their heaviest.  I think weight restriction is something the IFBB should consider.  Especially since the extra weight is usually carried in the midsection anyway.  Competitors would be more focused on refinement and small waists rather than mass at all costs no matter how it's carried.  Diuretics testing would have to be heavily enforced though, since conditioning would be a big factor.

We also need to limit the length possible in the long jump, and the lowest score in golf. How about capping the most home runs in a baseball season? Definitely.

Track athletes, golfers, and baseball players all have restrictions in their sport.  They have to use regulation equipment (track shoes, regulation golf balls, wooden bats), and bodybuilding basically has no rules.  Setting up rules for the sport helps legitimize it.

I dont think weight restrictions would work.

However if the ifbb followed their own mandate and punished bloated guts and poor aesthetics the athletes would come in lighter
