What to do with the egg yolks?
« on: July 25, 2006, 06:06:55 PM »
The eggs i get are from our own free range chickens in the back yard and the old man hates me wasting the yolks, and with a couple of days of yolk build up dadd made a omelte withe them. Just wondering how anyone puts their wasted yolk to use else where or i should i just throw them down the drain?

I pour mine down the drain.  There is nothing good in the yoke.  When was the last time your old man checked his cholestrol?  Now would be a good time to start.

You are very misinformed on this subject.

Cholesterol is not a poison. It is a substance that is necessary to be healthy.
High cholesterol itself does not cause heart disease.
People who have low blood cholesterol have the same rates of heart disease as people who have high blood cholesterol.
The cholesterol found in your blood comes from two sources: cholesterol in food that you eat and cholesterol that your liver makes from other nutrients. What's interesting is that the amount of cholesterol that your liver produces varies according to how much cholesterol you eat. The more cholesterol you eat, the less your liver produces. And vice versa - the less cholesterol you eat, the more your liver produces. This is why a low cholesterol diet does not decrease a person's blood cholesterol by more than a few percent if at all.

An egg has very little total fat (5 grams/large egg) with most of it (about 3.5 grams) being unsaturated.

The yolk contains ½ the protein of the entire egg and the majority of all the vitamins and minerals for which there are many.  And  egg yolks are one of the few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D.

Note the chart at this site:

http://cholesterol-and-health.com/Egg_Yolk.html

Free range is probably even more nutritious. 2 yolks/day should not be of concern.  What you do with the rest  ???  - feed them to your pets  :P

Thats alot of fat for a yolk and the whites are all the clean protein of the egg. Thats why bodybuilders eat so many egg whites without the yolk. They get all the protein without the fat. Throw it away. Eggs are cheap. Eat tons of egg whites and maybe like 2 yolks. Throw the rest away. Your dad sounds like he is a cheap bastard. I bet he is the type of guy that eats the bacon grease but leaves the bacon for your mom dog.

Jedi knight you sound like a loser who has no friends in the real world so he starts confrontations on online forums not to their face, if you have nothing good say than don't. He would give you his last beer if you were around. So Jedi lets say you stop being a cock sucker and leave family out of it.

Unless your body fat is high or you have high cholesteral the yoke is not going to hurt.

It's all about your genetics/current cholesterol levels and overall fat intake.

Personally I use 2-3 whole eggs in a 10 egg omlet, sometimes I will make an additional yolk omlet for my dogs, as it is good for coat and such, otherwise they go down the drain!

I always thought so too, but I think ~flower~ would disagree.  Something about the cooking process distroying things animals can use (cholesterol is not an issue with animals I don't believe).  The biggest reason I cook 'em is to eliminate the sticky mess  :-\

I don't know who came up with the idea of discarding the yolks. But, someone needs to crack him upside the head with a chair. Not only are you discarding half the protein of the egg, but you're tossing precious nutrients, including cholesterol (Yes, CHOLESTEROL), that can help your body increase in size and strength.

The old-school bodybuilders lived off whole eggs, yet they had little problems getting lean. I'm quite sure you can whittle some fat away from some other foods to compensate for that contained in egg yolks.

In short, eat the blessed things; don't throw them away.

If youre bulking eat the freakin yolks....you need the extra fat and protein

if cutting then sure you need to go with just the whites, but i think yolks are a must while bulking as too little fat intake can suppress test levels!!!

You should eat the yolks while you're dropping weight, too. Last year, I was able to trim off 25 lbs. in three months and when I consume eggs, the yolks were present and accounted for. Six large eggs have about 30 grams of fat; so, all you'd have to do is cut that amount of fat from your other foods. A little extra prep for chicken and beef (even fish) can do that trick quite nicely.

I'm not a big fan of yolks.  It's not the cholesterol but the fat that's the problem, (be it saturated or unsaturated).  If I'm eating a 1/2 dozen eggs at a sitting that adds 30 g of fat to the daily total, which would be more than half of my daily fat consumption.  That being said, I don't like wasting food (one of the few values my patrents instilled in me), so I buy egg whites.

It's a simple balancing of calories, as I learned to do with carbs, when I was dropping weight. Just as I cut 75-150 grams of carbs from my other foods to allow for that amount of carbs from 1-2 servings of CELL-TECH, I can do the same by cutting 30 grams of fat from other foods, to allow for that in a half-dozen eggs.

doubt

the medical advice on eggs eaten per week is not 2 x 7(14)

Disagree, 60g of fat (12g of which is from fish oil) leaves very little room to cut.  I just don't get what the big deal with the yolk is.  Need the vitamins? take a supplement or a lower cal/lower fat food source.  Need the protein in the yolk?  again, egg whites give you more protein per calorie so eat more of them.  Let's be honest, people want to eat the yolk because they like the TASTE.  I haven't seen one decent justification from this board for eating the yolk (e.g., the old time bodybuilders ate them, BFD).

The same could be said, regarding justification for discarding them. Keeping the yolk is more convenient, less messy, and YES, it helps the egg taste good. Regarding the old-school bodybuilders, the point was simple: Eating egg yolks was NOT a detriment to their getting lean for competiton. If anything, it may have helped their cause. And, since many of those old-timers are either still alive and kicking or died at a "ripe old age", the whole cholesterol phobia is quite unwarranted.

I agree that there is no cholesterol problem-- that's science.  As far as discarding yolks being messy, yes I also agree (that why I suggest buying egg yolks)-- that's convenience .  But I still don't see the nutritional value in the yolks, when compared with the high calorie intake and fat content.  Hey, if it doesn't mess up your totals for the day, I say go for it.

I really don't know what to discuss about......

when u talk about eggs, u r talking about protein(for bodybuilder)

u r talking about eating 8 to 16 eggs or even more eggs daily, so how can u eat so many egg yolks in one single day?
ok, u can if u want to forget about cholesterol..... ::)

but calories and fat?
u manually remove these from your egg yolks?

PLS REMEMBER
usually when u think about egg, u r not thinking about it's minerals and bluh bluh bluh.....
u want it's protein!
