Are bodybuilding mags bad for kids?
« on: August 03, 2006, 09:15:34 PM »
For some reason when my neice and nephew 7 and 8 come to stay with me I always put the bodybuiling mags away so they can't look at them. For some reason I think its inappropriate for them to read them. But when I  hear some of you guys say its a legitimate sport and should be respected as such I wonder what I am so worried about. I don't put other sport magazines away, they have seen swimmers in bathing suits and shirtless surfers but for some reason I don't want them to see bodybuildesr. If its a legitimate healthy sport why not let them look at the mag? Is it some irrational fear I have? Anyone have any thoughts similiar experience? Do any pros out there let their kids see those mags and if not why?

Nobody wants their kid thinking Daisy Dukes/workboots are proper attire for society.

Start worrying if the pages of your kid's bodybuilding mag are stuck together.

Yea your right, don't think I would let them watch it at my place. Especially the hip hop crap.

A lot of newspaper stands here in the city put the bb mags next to the porn, I guess they think it is too extreme for kids as well. But I wonder if any pros are bothered by the suggestion that their magazines are almost in the same catagory as porn.

bb mags inspire. they show what the human body is capable of and display them as the results of hard work and intuitive nutrition/training regimes.

I'd say the old mags had more artistic merrit, but the modern one's are more impressive. either way, nothing wrong with letting kids look at them

I agree with you that it inspires and I remember I was inspired by them as a kid. it made me look forward to growing up. But the ones today seem to extreme. Can the kids really aspire to what their looking at, is it real or is it fake?. Should we tell them it is drug enhanced? But the same goes for other sport stars, are their accomplishments real or fake (drug enhanced). It is getting harder to raise kids I suppose, glad I am just the Uncle, I can avoid these subjects. You parents out there have a lot of work explaining all this stuff to them.

I also think the mags might be to sexualized for kids. But that might be my own phobias at play there.

I don't let my son look at BB mags simply because of the suggestive sexual content that attracts most of the readers, in addition I don't want him having the false presumption that bodybuilding promotes a healthy lifestyle when in fact it does the opposite.....damn near everything written is false advertising. It's misleading and caters to the naive!

I don't think its the sport per se. Its the crap these magazines try to pass of as "bodybuilding".

they were on steroids back in the day so I'm not sure why today's bodybuilders should be a problem

I probably wouldn't let them read MD from the past 3 years - they don't need to see pictures of Dave Polumbo, let alone read his advice on using steroids.

Strange you put 'em away. Is it the magazine itself you don't want them to see or the magazine cover 'cause I know some of them can be a lil' risque for a 7 year old.

Its mostly the pics in the magazine and cover. The pics portray an extreme over the top reality. Yea a lot of it is risque and some might say it is all risque. The images are just too much to soon for some little kid. Maybe Im being overprotective and old fashioned but it all just seems to intense for kids. How does a kid understand a guy with 23 inch bi's or a girl with huge breasts and 1 percent fat. Will it really screw up their own body image.

I won't comment on the mags from a moral standpoint...people need to judge that for themselves....

But I am one of the many that at 15 read all the mags bought all supps (Megs Mass 4000) Vanadyl Sulfate, etc and didthe three hour "Weider-split" workouts 6 days a week....time and $$$ wasted
