weightlifting/bodybuilding events
« on: August 04, 2006, 09:25:38 PM »
Everyones always talking about how long and boring BB competitions have become. I say they incorprate sometype of weightlifting events in with the bodybuilding. They could take like three lifts and  have the competitors max out, or rep out there bodyweight and make that 50% of the overall score. I've never been to a BB competition personally but Im sure it gets pretty repetative with 20-30 competitors coming out posing to the Titanic theme song one after another. Im pretty sure they used to do this in the old days incoorporating lifting into the BB events. This is just an idea Im sure some of you guys could come up with better details.

Mate, this is Getbig, you could have summed up your above post thusways:

Bodybuilding is shit, from an entertainment perspective, strongman pisses all over it. Bollocks to tiny tits like Coleman, Savakis would shit him!

Yeah, most folks seem to go with that flow

Bodybuilding is just a dying pastime for aged fags (and others amongst lifes conundrums) that find half dead oily men in tight undies attractive (and thats just the miss O)

Actually I think they used to do some lifting events before the BB show back in the early 60's and 50's.

actually, all the major AAU bodybuilding contests were held as part of (olympic style) weightlifting events.   In the 1970s, a few were held with powerlifting championships.

and well into the 1970s, athletic ability in another sport was counted as part of your score, along with appearance, grooming, and interview ability.   therefore, the most muscular guy rarely won.   but the IFBB decided to be different and said they'd judge their contests soley on muscularity.

In 1983 I won the American Cup at the Shrine Auditorium in LA.  They had Armwrestling on the left part of the stage, Bodybuilding in the center of the stage and Powerlifting on the right side.  They were separated by a drape.  It all wenton at the same time.  It was kindof neat.  The audience was full and you could watch everything at once.  Unique but cool

Many people would certainly find posing combined with some kind of fitness or strength test to be more interesting than posing alone.  Some people would never find a men's bodybuilding contest to be interesting.  Some would never be interested in women's bodybuilding, some have no interest in women's fitness, and others have no interest in women's figure.  Now how many people can say they enjoy watching 6 hours of men's bodybuilding and women's bodybuilding, fitness and figure combined into one?  I'm not sure if the promoters think they are offering more value for the dollar by putting on these 6+ hour extravaganzas or if they figure they need to give the closeted gay men cover for going to the show by combining the men's and women's competitions.  Either way, they've taken events with limited appeal and combined them into a marathon that has something sure to bore almost everyone.

When we went to the Ironman I found the strongman events better and much more exiting than the BB!
