Crime rates would drop.  however, it would take a lot longer than a year.  It woudl take about 50.  And during those 50 years, it sure would suck to live here.

I'm all for gun control, given 2 factors:
1) The criminals lose their guns too.  If they're already breaking the law, they're not going to care about new laws.
2) We can trust the govt.  See: 911.

Crime rates have been noticeably dropping for the last 20 years, particularly/significantly for violent crimes - every valid study will show this. The problem is that you have police dep'ts that must justify higher and higher budgets fuelling public 'scare' campaigns that it is not the case, and that we are ever more at risk than we have ever been. Bullshit. With a greater prosperity comes a greater civic rest. Police dep'ts, even in my small town, resemble some crypto-military unit down to their dress. It is perverse.

Gun control would be difficult.  Reason being that its in your nature now.  It would likely take decades of social conditioning to get right and for people to feel safe enough to get them go.

Its quite evident when I discussed this with people before here and they seemed to lack the ability to concieve that I could feel safe without a gun in Australia.  If everybody else does then very few people will bother with guns.

You do have a sense of greater security.  Any man not named Chuck Norris will get his ass kicked by 3 inferior men.  When I go for a late night walk, take the trash out, run to the truck, etc, tossing it in your pocket just makes you walk a tad more confident.  lots of responsibility comes with it to tho.

I live in the Ottawa, the capital of Canada, and I don't know a single person who owns a gun. I couldn't imagine going to a supermarket and seeing someone with a firearm on their person. That's jsut craziness.

Every day that the threat of this lawsuit hangs over 240's head like a Sword of Damocles is another drop of poison added to his bloodstream. Over time, 240 will slowly rot away on the inside from accumulated stress and anxiety. When he finally succumbs, there will be only a brief thump as his lifeless body slumps to the floor. Secondly, Thunder Bay is one of the worst cities in Canada as far as crime goes and we look at about five gun related deaths a decade here.  Makes me wonder if greater access does indeed relate to greater crime caused by such access.

Thunder Bay's proximity to the U.S. is what makes it so dangerous. 

Despite what the gun lobby promotes, guns do kill people, plain and simple.

I love my guns, but I'd have to be an idiot to carry one around with me without a specific one-time purpose.

Your government is in favour of guns but not drugs, despite the fact that the exact same arguments can be used to ban guns as to ban drugs.  Yeah, makes a lot of sense. 

I'm a libertarian.  legalize em both then punish the hell out of ppl for drug or gun crimes.

i couldnt believe the other day when i saw that 258 million guns are circulating the US- these are the registered and acclunted for weapons.

for a population of just under 300 million, that is mind boggling.

it's easier to control guns when the public arent allowed to have them...it becomes a matter of strict supply and regulation, and apprehension of anyone who has one.

the real scary thing is, with 400,000 cases of diagnosed and known about mental illness as well, you have as many as 300,000 nut case gun owners running around.

My brother's pharmacy was robbed by two guys.  One of them had charges for attempted murder on a police officer.  Do you think this man would have turned his gun in, if they had been banned?

Revealed later, they planned to murder my brother but he fired his own gun in self-defense, first.  One man was struck, and they both fled.  He's partially paralyzed now, crapping in a bag.  If good guys hadn't been able to defend themselves, my brother would be dead.

And, if guns had been banned for BOTH parties, they would have just come in and used a kitchen knife to kill him and rob the pharmacy. 

So tell me the solution to this situation.  As long as anyone in this society can have a knife, we will need guns.

Indeed.  If Canada had the same population density, education level, drug problems, and economy, you would likely have a lot more violence.  It wouldn't be shootings, but it's be robbery and stabbings.

Until these societal problems are solved, you will have violent crime.  And as long as you have violent crime, there will always be a need for people to protect themselves. 

I've carried a handgun for 9 years now. I have never shot anyone and never broken the law.  But I believe it has allowed me to stand confident in some situations where I would have otherwise been intimidated, which most likely prevented those situations in the first place. 

We never know when that "one day" will come when someone will try to grab your kid or start executing people in a McD or decide to rape a loved one while his 2 buddies kick the crap out of you.  I pray it never happens, but I'm prepared for if it does.
