I actually agree about the straps. They don't really make much difference when doing max singles.

I really don't think straps make much difference for singles. You lose focus and momentum wrapping the straps around the bar. It's much easier to walk up, bend over and pick the bar up in one action... maybe that's just me??
I agree 100%. I can get a good 10-20lbs. more without straps and using mixed grip. You can just "grip and rip". The mixed grip also changes the mechanics for the better IME, compared to overhand grip.

Yep, that was in MD last year in a tribute to Ronnie section where pros spoke about Ronnie.

Ronnie started with 80s then went up to 100s and 120s and finally 150s.  Johnnie kept up for a while but could only get the 150s for two reps.  Ronnie did three sets of 20 reps with them and when Ronnie was reminded that the gym didn't go past the 150s after doing his high rep sets Ronnie said "Man, this gym sucks", and Johnnie said "Yeah man, definitely."

That story isn't exactly accurate, but it's pretty close.  It goes to show Johnnie did not have Ronnie's endurance when it came to strength.

How is Ronnie's total 2300?

Deadlift = 850
Squat = 850
Bench = 600

These may not be exactly accurate, but they are probably close.  Guaranteed Ronnie would get over 2000 in contest.  Johnnie said he got 2170 in an official contest.  I would say Ronnie is slightly over that, but not by more than 100 pounds or so at most.

ronnie would get over 2000 in a pl contest.  however, jj competes as a 242 pounder, where as coleman would need to be 275 or SHW.  2000 for a SHW aint that good.  but who knows what would have happened if ronnie trained for strength.  i dont think he would have been an all time great (sorry hulkster) but def. would have put up some good numbers.

Johnnie can hang close with Ronnie on deadlifts, but not on squats and DEFINETELY not on bench press.

Johnnie's 804 deadlift was performed in front of judges and passed all the necessary requirements.  No straps, all raw (deadlift suit does not help much if any; nothing like a bench shirt or squat suit).  He got the next attempt up, and would have been counted in the gym but not at a meet (probably due to hitching).

Ronnie did 800 for two with straps 5 weeks out from olympia.  Form very questionable per powerlifting standards.

But really, who gives a shit when you look like Coleman?

his form?  how was it questionable?  he locked out both reps.

i think its fair to say that had ronnie become a powerlifter in his 20's, we would be seeing him squat and dead around 925 atleast and bench 600+

You never know. The guy seems to have some serious issues with his grip.

And I'm sure he wouldn't pull 925 lbs. Perhaps with the circus barbell they use in the WPO (Oakie bar). But not with a regular barbell.

The squat however, I think he would be good for a 1000 lbs squat, in an untested federation.

i agree...his form looks tight and he doesn't bounce the weights off the floor but i really thought he would rep 495 like nothing for his strength.

those BB rows are also very odd...maybe they work for him?

For those who think straps don't make a big difference you aren't pulling anywhere close to 800 lbs.

Right on brutha!  I'm pulling in the 7's, not too far off from the 800 mark, and can tell you all this guy is right on.  Straps make all the difference in the world when you're pulling this heavy.

Ronnie uses a weightlifting barbell, chalk, gloves, and straps.

The point in using a weightlifting barbell is that it flexes a bit more and that it's 28 mm thick instead of 29 mm, ie easier to hold onto.

If you look at that picture of Ronnie in the beginning of the thread you can see he's actually using an Oakie bar.

Johnnie O's deadlifting strength is well documented. Hell, the pictures of his personal record have been published so many times its a wonder you havent run across them (their in this month's flex-mag too)
