Sickening!

The bar dropped immediately. Surely he would have known when he lifted the bar off the first time that he had nothing in the tank  ???

Cameras were rolling though, he had to go through with it. Monster crushing (excuse the pun) of the ego.

The bar fell off because he neglected to use his thumbs.

Here's some advice:
1. Use your thumbs to grip the bar.  This will keep the bar from rolling on to your chest.
2. Be able to bench 225lbs, before attempting 295lbs.
3. Don't let go of the bar.
4. Stop going to the gym, you may permanently hurt yourself or someone around you.
5. Oh, I'm natural by the way.

...I've NEVER seen something like that in the gym, I don't see how that guy would have survived without SERIOUS injury.

Now, that spotter couldn't have helped much either...that bar just DROPPED...where the hell did it bounce, his neck, sternum?

Those weights humbled his a$$!
 ;)

RESPECT ME BI*CH!!!

Coach's Technique Checklist
Correct technique is very important when using weights, if you wish to avoid injury.

-Bar loaded evenly, collars in place and secure
-Spotter knows the command when to assist the athlete
-Athlete lies on bench, eyes under bar
-Hands placed evenly on bar
-Grip firm and slightly wider than shoulder width
-Thumbs around bar, wrists locked

..no need to go on here!

...dudes, thumbs around the bar wouldn't have helped here...he didn't 'let go' of the bar, his elbows buckled!

He just had no business lifting that weight, plain and simple.  Accidents happen, and that's what this was.

Big deal. The guy just got a few bruises. Lots of people use a suicide grip without ever dropping the bar.

I was spotting a buddy of mine when something similar happened. It was 295 like in the video and he had pumped it up at least 4 times, then, all of a sudden his hands came up without the bar. I couldn't believe it. Needless to say, I bent over and yanked it off of him once I realized it happened. Believe me, those kinds of things happen in the blink of an eye, and I had been lifting at least 5 years when it happened and I had never seen anything like it before. I hope the guy in the vid is ok  :-\

I have never used my thumbs when benching.  I wouldn't even begin to do it.  I have never come close to dumping the bar since I started lifting in 1973.  But, in my mind do you honestly think your thumbs are going to support that weight if it is rolling forward.  Thumbless defintiely takes practice if your are not used to it.  But it is second nature with me don't know any other way.
