Classic Schwarzenegger trying to pretend he was different. Maybe it's true that they're lazy, I don't know but Arnold himself landed in a great situation - busily training & tanning in Venice in the heyday of the 60s, with an apartment & car ready and waiting; hardly a struggle. Completely the opposite of the rhetoric he repeats every so often about arriving in the US as an immigrant with nothing, which is entirely untrue.

The bricklaying thing, his company "Pumping Bricks": he never did any of the work himself, but again it makes great copy-for him.

The reality is that he never had a 9-5 job in his life until becoming governor. ;D
Exactly, Arnie is full of shit. He worked hard in the gym but that was about it. He only "got a car and a place to live", well wahhhh, wahhh, wahhh :'( look how tough he had it. Shit a home and transportation are the two most important things to have, it's all down hill after that. Arnold's been putting down the athletes and sport(yes sport, fuck you) that made him famous for years. Nothing new here.

I think Arnold can say what he wants about Bodybuilding considering he is the one who made it what it is. Nobody has done as much for the sport as Arnold.
How much ya bench?

I don't think there was much luck about the success Arnold had. He made things happen. When he is in a room he dominates it and makes people notice him and he holds court. He knows how to work a room.

Arnold's arms were 21 1/2 that day and he weighed about 255. I think it is true that he arrived there with next to nothing. It didn't take him long to network. Don't forget he was Mr Universe and a huge star even in 68.

the guy might not have had a 9-5 job but he did come to this country with nothing and was a millionaire 5 years later nobody gave him that or the 500 million he's made since then give him some credit

Vince are you saying that Arnold's arm measured 21.5 in 1968? My God! I don't know if I believe that. What did they measure in 1974?!

None of us know exactly what arnold did and didn't do in the early days, but I agree with Vince, who met him.  Arnold seems to create and capitalize on opportunities.  Its not just that he was in the right place and right time.  He is a leader and a magnetic person that others wanted to be around or involved with.

The whole BBing scene is different now, IMO its not an apples to apples comparison.

I never post falsehoods. I measured Arnold's arms after he had a workout. I can't remember if he did arms but I don't think so. Why would I post nonsense? I had the photo published in MTI in 1969 and the measurement is quoted there, too. I have that magazine somewhere but in a box among many boxes. I never measured him again. I think he was at his biggest in 73, at least in contest shape. He was huge in 68 but the guys in California told him he was fat. Eventually he listened.

I did the trip to LA in October 1968 with the intention of trying to stay there. Not easy for Canadians because they are not allowed to work there. The Mexicans don't worry about such laws. Anyway, I had 200 dollars and a VW plus a Shell credit card. I lasted a month there. I slept in my car for over a week then Chip Wilson from Chicago and his flatmate let me sleep on their sofa in Santa Monica. Arnold arrived in LA in the same week as me and I met him at the original Golds and even took a couple of shots of him that were published in Muscle Training Illustrated. He was easygoing then and even let me measure his arms one day. I saw him hanging around Muscle Beach and Venice Beach with the boys. He didn't seem to have a job.

I heard later that Joe gave him a 'job' in the warehouse shifting boxes around but Arnold wasn't interested. I found out he shared a house with some Aussies and Kiwis in LA. Some of those guys were involved in shipping stolen cars back to Australia and one was arrested and spent time in Jail in America. I have no idea if Arnold was involved. A Kiwi escaped to Vancouver with a new Shelby GT500 and I put the picture together when I was in Hawaii and found out the Aussie was arrested in January 1969 by the FBI. I was on my way back from Australia with my wife to be.

Mits Kowashima brought Arnold and Dave Draper to Hawaii in Jan 69 to do a show. So Arnold had some income from doing shows, etc. Any guy who can't speak English properly and ends up a movie star and governor in California has what it takes to survive in LA.

I lasted a month and when the money ran out I headed back to Vancouver and eventually settled in Sydney in January 1971. Arnold went on to bigger things but people forget he bought a house worth over $1,000,000 back in 1980. So Arnold listened to Joe Gold and invested his earnings in real estate instead of opening a gym.

Great post! What else do you remember about Arnold?

He was a great promoter no doubt, but just to get it straight he never came here with nothing, as he's always claimed. That is rhetoric that many eat right up. The actual reality is that Weider was hungry for a guy to elevate BB in ways the other guys he had then wouldn't or couldn't,  therefore Schwarzenegger had some leverage in receiving special treatment.

Schwarzenegger didn't want to work in the warehouse doing labor the way Draper did, and instead got an apartment, car, some spending money for writing training articles & was forced to train & tan in probably the most desirable neighborhood in the country, Venice beach in the 60s. Also received huge, instant publicity via magazine covers & articles, that led to to appearance money. Like other BBs he also created a mail order business for in-depth training booklets, using the name Arnold Strong. Not much work to do there, it was easy money.

He was a great salesman AND was also very fortunate-he made his money initially on real estate, buying at a time when the prices were low. The first smallish apartment building he bought in Venice was a suggestion by Weider, not Arnold himself figuring it out. As far as I know, Weider also fronted the money for it as well.

He was good AND lucky-upon arrival in Vencie he was already instantly connected, with Weider, Gold and his gay businessman friend from Europe advising him on his moves. He was excellent in taking advantage of those connections, but just to be clear he had advantages that almost no one else then or now has.

His arms in the 60s at 250 bodyweight were likely bigger than they ever were in his best shape.

Sorry, that was his job as a roofer.  He would destroy people's roofs then go to work on their house.  Yeah, talk about confidence.  The dipshit was more insecure than Kamali.

I am still not getting it. Are you saying while he repairs the roof he destroys it further and then comes back to rebuild it?

Yeah arnold was groomed and provided for by none other than uncle joe himself.

You want to know one bodybuilder who fits the description arnold falsely attaches to himself - Sergio OLiva.

in his monthly column in the back he says that todays bb'ers are lazy and spoiled and that when he came here Weider gave him a little money to get an apartment and a car and that was it, he put himself through school and went to work as a bricklayer with Franco, he says todays pros want everything handed to them, whaddya think?
I think... that the money that the Weiders and the supplement companies make ,,is nothing in comparisson to the money, the pro's ask for !

Before making an opinion about Arnold, read the complete part where Arnold talks about this...

From Flex September 2006 issue...

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Editorial

Lately, I have heard talk from bodybuilders and others who think more monetary rewards should be available in the sport Joe created. I think it’s always good to strive for more, but I want to challenge them to do something about it. Maybe they should create these extra revenue streams by starting their own supplement line, publishing their own bodybuilding magazine or promoting their own pro contests, where they can offer more than the $700,000 plus that is available at the Olympia. If they have innovative ways to improve the bodybuilding economy, I say have at it.

One of President John Kennedy’s famous lines was, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” I would put a bodybuilding inflexion in there and say, “Ask not what bodybuilding can do for you; ask what you can do for bodybuilding.” You cannot stand and wait for the world to knock on your front door and offer you a living. Of course, everyone needs a little help, sometimes a little luck, but essentially your future is in your own hands.

When Joe brought me to the United States in 1968, he gave me the opportunity to improve myself physically and fiscally. He gave me a stipend that helped me move into a small apartment in Venice and buy a used Volkswagen. It wasn’t a fortune, but it was enough to get me on my own two feet. With a roof over my head, transportation and the ability to feed myself, I had all I needed as a foundation upon which I could build myself.

Soon after relocating, I enrolled in business school, I did bricklaying work with Franco Columbu, and I went about the business of finalizing my long-term plan for reaching all my goals one by one. With the security of knowing I had the basic tools for survival at my disposal, I was able to spread my wings and soar toward my loftiest goals.

Joe put me in that position. He believed in teaching you how to fish, rather than simply giving you a fish when you’re hungry. That way, you become more self-reliant. Joe gave me the opportunities, but it was up to me to work hard to maximize those opportunities. Neither Franco nor I ever saw Joe as a meal ticket. We saw him as a kind of dream maker. It was as if he laid out a treasure map but left it to us to decipher it by combining our ambition, talent and work ethic. And we did. Franco is now a successful chiropractor living in Los Angeles, and I’ve done pretty well for myself, as you probably know. Joe gave us the opportunity to better ourselves and we took it with both hands.

While he does the free assessment he would destroy the roof.

Don't kid yourself, Arnold was as much a drug addict as pros today in terms of his mentality.  The only reason he wasn't gassed to the max is because he didn't have the gear that is around today.  DO NOT KID YOURSELF.  Have you seen this man off gear?  He was around 5'11-6'0 and maybe - MAYBE 210 soaking wet.  Don't try to debate me on this because I will just post the pictures which prove it.

Again you have no proof and nothing to go by.

All drugs - NO DIFFERENT THAN PROS TODAY.

And to the Arnie nuthuggers: shut the hell up about Arnold having confidence.  To own a 23 year old deaf and emotionally dependent child is the EXACT OPPOSITE of confidence.

Arnold at 210.  ::)

WOOT WOOT!!!  WHAT A NON DRUG DEPENDENT BEAST!!!!!  ::)

In the end does it matter? He did more for bodybuilding than any other competitor.

Additionally, everything he states in his editorial is right on the mark. A lot of people today have this sense of entitlement when in fact no one owes them a damn thing.
