The wine thread!
« on: September 12, 2006, 01:43:53 PM »
As the resident lush i want this to be a "my current fav wine" kinda thread...

currently i seem to be into ports..and i've gotton re acquainted with an old friend.. " mavaro daphni" its made by kurtaki and you'll only be ale( :D) to find it in greek resturants and diners...and well greek orthodox church (dont ask how i know :P )

its very high in alkie content and leaves excellent trails...almost syrupy and very sweet. Greeks love their alkie so if ya visit a diner i'm sure you'll be able to ask them part with a bottle..(not many places cork where i live)

'cept I wear myopic specs (for driving and tv) and therefore cannot read the labels.

fortunately most of my mates/neighbours and family understand a good gotttle. I don't.

Please pontificate.  I think this might be a great learning thread.  I know pino grigio and merlot with meat.

There is probably a great song about this.   xl

i suppose you have to do this fine wine thread in tandem with the what's for dinner thread.

I've never learned how to be a conossoueir(sP) , because I'll drink cheap plonk.

It would be good though, if we did this learning thread.

Do you have to learn the regions first, or what type of grape.
Which country?

Or is it about what food it goes with?

I'd like to learn
Perhaps I don't need to, as I've always had someone else read the list and order for me.
And pay for all of it

     Also to play the music.
                                   xL

But I should learn

can we?

ok i dont follow the tradational red with steak bullshit...live outside the box a little..i'm a red only kinda dood....white wine is for people that dont really know or like wine but still wanna hold a glass of wine at socials... :D

the colder it gets the drier the wine i prefer..the warmer it is the sweeter i go...(ports not included)....so its aussie shiraz (even though cali makes a damn good shiraz)...so personally as far as reds go and as i feel..in accending order of dryness..my personal opinion..

aussie shiraz.
american shiraz
cali merlots
cali cabs
petite syrah
turpentine :D

dont ask me where bordeaux falls on that list..it stands alone as a different mood :)

btw..the best way to learn is to go by the bottle and drink it...

remember...after opening the bottle let it breath for a good 20mins before drinking :)

the ashes are coming up...as good as an ocassion to learn :)

decanting wines is always a good option.  Good bottles will still have the "madre" or "mother" settled at the bottom.  You could take a lesser wine and make it somewhat better by pouring it over teh mother and letting it sit.  Australia and Chile have some great wines coming out.  As does Germany.  I stick to reds myself as i have only found one white wine that was worth drinking, but have yet to find it again.  And that one was an expensive bottle.  I am still partial to French and Spanish wines.  A good Rioja for the tablee is nice.  And during summer a rioja sangria is nice

A topic dear to my heart.
Mind you I don't know as much as I should or pretend to.

One of the basic mistakes I find new people make is rather simple.
Most wines not all though but a fair amount are priced as they should be.
Take the next step up in the price range (at least a $10 jump) and you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality difference.

If you can find any and it hasn't been priced out of your range the 1984 year for most European wines was an amazing Vintage.  You won't go wrong buying any of those bottles.

Personally I like the French and Italian wines.
Chianti Classico Brolio my personal fav.

Mark your calendars Beaujolais Nouveau are just around the corner.

One can acquire fine wine and enjoy it more if one remembers that a single glass is fine, but two aren't necessarily better.
Celebrate pain.

EXCELLENT THREAD Tox... thanks for the PM to alert me to it!

I have to say that I enjoy both red and whites fairly equally.  If I'm at home, I tend to want an earthy, spicey, dry red (Cal cabs  SOOO yum) because they tend to relax me.  When I'm out to dinner, I usually want a crisp, lightly sweet and fruity riesling.... they tend to make me feel a little more vibrant.  Reds relax me tooooo much, and when I have them when I'm out to eat, I wanna sleep..... not good to do at the table with yer date.... German rieslings are my fave when eating out.

The best find for a red is Truth... a $17 bottle of wine that tastes like it could easily cost $50 or more...

Tox, I still have that Inniskillin ice wine sitting in my fridge.... The O is in 2 1/2 weeks... the minute I step off the plane and am back in NY, that baby's getting popped open and lovingly guzzled  :D

Sad thing is, I'll probably be eating pizza with it..... :-\ :o
