question for trainers
« on: September 13, 2006, 06:55:37 AM »
I'm thinking about getting certified and getting a job as a trainer. What cerftifications do gyms look for?  What other factors play a part in finding a job as a trainer? Hows tehe pay?

most of them make about 8 bucks an hour and have to clean up the gym when they're not training people.

If you are overwieght, show no muscle mass or just look like you never step a foot in the gym, then you should fit in nicely.Just beware, the guy who makes fries at McDonalds will be in your tax bracket...but he doesnt have to talk to fat people, you do.
They call me Jaejonna!!!

You have to learn how to talk to your clients for most of the session without really doing any training.

Any certification nationally recognized will usually get you in...Depends on the city your in too...If you try to land a job in a highly competitive city than the facility usually would like to give you their own test or if you are new to training than have you put in a number of training hours...The pay can be great, but you can also struggle for clients; all that really depends on if you are the one selling yourself or if the facility is just throwing you bones...If you do decide to train people try to do it in a city where people have the money and "understand" that it is a valuable service....

Most gyms could give a crap who you are certified by....just that your certified.
ACE is known as one of the best.

Basically...if you look like you have been working out for a while...you will get business....if you dont.....

Many new "giant gyms" with the huge cardio theaters and what-not do this...I had many friends come up to me when this new 70,000sq.ft. gym opened all claiming "guess what I am a trainer like you now"...I was just like help us all.... ::)

These are all the reasons you need to be an independent contractor and have a little self-respect and confidence in what you do...If you just work for the gym than thats all you will ever be is their do-boy...If you independently train clients you won't have to deal with that shit....You choose the route....

i do some part time personal training and contest prep

if your gonna do it full time you need to be in the right location and be able to hold on to a few study clients.

i have issa...for most gyms any of the nationally recognized certifications will do.

there are also some gyms that will allow you to pay monthly rent as an independent contractor instead of being hired and payed by the gym.

My friend was a hair colorest at a upscale salon in NYC.  She couldn't take the chemicals and decided to train people.  She didn't have any experience beyond the basic cardio 3 times a week.  Now she's making 100 bucks a session in NY.  Financial success in P.T. has NOTHING to do with what you know.

I have been a trainer in different clubs all over the U.S.  Most clubs will take the lowest of low in terms of certifications.  Independent contracting or in home training is definitely where the money is at.  I would put in a little time at the crappy gyms first to learn how to handle people and get along with all different kinds of personalities. Then build up a decent client base at that gym, steal all the clients and take them private.  Charge the same amount as your gym charged them, except now you keep most of the money instead of giving 75% to the gym.
On a sidenote,  strippers make the best personal trainers.  They are usually hot, and are not afraid to be told "no" when asking people for money.  All you gotta do is teach em how to curl a dumbbell and they will be rolling in the dough.
