I learned to speak basic Spanish in about 3 weeks.  not master spanish, but conversational for most basic situations.  obviously not the fluent level where I can argue 911 (nueve-once? lol), but the ability to communicate with most common nouns, verbs, sentence structure.

I bought the cd where you speak along with it as you drive.  I was driving to college and work, a good 1-2 hours a day, and just picked up the Pimsleur cd.  Something like 30 bucks for 8 cds. I love it.

What do you mean by fluent... being able to ask for a glass of milk, or discuss abstract ideas?  :-\

Unless you're doing some immersion thing, it's probably not likely if you're aiming for abstract idea discussion fluency. Between the train car word constructions, grammatical genders, and all the other complicated aspects of German, you might want to aim for two semesters...  :)

You can do french for 5 years in school and get 94%.  But if you never go there you'll never learn the lingo.  The best way is to go there (Paris or Brittany or Cannes )  and...

The easiest/best way is to learn when you are 3 or 5 years old, as your mind is open.

Saying that, I learned most if not all of horti cult ural (gardening/flower) latin words from a book...

What language you wanna learn?
bad language?

Also, (sorry to wreck your thread), why on earth would you need to learn another lingo?

If you speak English (and can make yourself understood to any and all English speaking peoples, why would you need another language?

Unless, as i said, you want to read a german philos-oposfer in the original?

If you speak English, you don't need another language.  Aren't we lucky?

Basic comprehension of latin, french, italian and possibly german might help.  I've even learned a bit of greek and latin.  Bit of Arabic and Hindi even.

But you really don't need anything other than English.

They teach English all over the world from age 5 and most people (except perhaps poor Africa and S. America) have a basic knowledge.

We'd be better off learning our own language properly and teaching others that.
