Worth a look re Lee Moran...

I know this is technically powerlifting stuff but I thought all the hardcore cats here would enjoy the photos and short article....

RIP Lee. The Big Red Machine will never forget.
(The Strongest Man In The World)

Posted July 21, 1999, A sad day-the passing of Lee Moran.

It is a sad day in the world of strength sports today. ASL has learned that Lee Moran has died. Lee will be remembered as the first man to officially squat 1000 pounds in competition. On his first attempt with the 1003 pounds, the collar came off and the weights slid off one side. People were running for shelter. Suddenly when the weight was gone off that side and the bar flipped off him and sailed like a missile, and landed on the next platform. Fortunately nobody was there at the time. He took his next attempt with it and got it. Nosebleed and all. Lee also won the 1984 IPF Worlds that were held in Dallas, Texas. In the 125+ kilo class, he won via a 400.0 kg squat, a 272.5 kilo bench and a 305.0 kilo deadlift. He totaled a massive 977.5 kilos. ASL wishes to convey our condolences to the entire Moran family.

Yes Figo, he's gone. Cool Cat too... a shame. I've got to say, that he lived his entire life just like that article... Hellbent for leather and totally unstoppable. If you went drinking with that boy & his friends, your Kung Fu had better be strong... real strong.

Dave Waddington was indeed one of Lee's rivals for the 1st offical 1000 pound squat. Dave had a big total as well. Big big man 6' 4" 330-340 pounds.

Interesting. I think that may be a misprint. Dave was 330 +/- when he did his 1003 lift. I saw him many times throughout that time frame 81'-84', and never saw him under 315-320. I'll see if I can post a link.

cs- I'm not positive of my facts but I'm pretty sure that Waddington did it first in competition, but his lift was done in front of non-cardholding judges. IE. judges that were not USPF world record qualified judges. Lee's big lift was done in front of card holding qualified judges and was therefore given official world status. I Think.

I do remember at the time, that when Waddington hit his 1000+ lift, a lot of people did not think that he had "hit depth", gone down low enough for the lift to pass. In all photos I have ever seen of the lift, it does not appear that he hit depth, but the photos are not always the entire story so...

Lee's big lift was super deep and absolutely official. I don't think Lee ever had a squat disqualified on depth. He either hit depth, came up and racked the weight, or he dumped the weight or did not come up. His technique was the exact same everytime.

You posted some great pictures. Thanks

Thanks for that concise explanation Tommy,i always remembered the name Lee Moran solely because of the bloodied nose pic, just like the one of the guy who tore his biceps deadlifting. Not sure of his name though, might have been something like Steve Wilson,i remember the pic years ago in Muscle and Fitness.
