The man who would be King, and the man who is King.

I don't know if you need a subscription to read these, but I read a couple of pieces in the NYT that I thought were interesting. If you can't read them, but want to . . . I can cut and paste.

the first one muses about whether Barack Obama is gearing up for a run at the presidency (I hope to God he is).

and the second one is about Bush and torture/wiretapping. It advocates Congress leaving the matter alone and letting the courts decide it.

You know, when Fineswine wanted to grab every gun in America, I really couldn't stand her.  But this looks okay:

Senator Dianne Feinstein ... has introduced a bill to affirm FISA’s control over all wiretapping. It would also give the authorities far more flexibility to listen first and get a warrant later when it’s really urgent. But the only bill Mr. Bush wants is a co-production of Vice President Dick Cheney and Arlen Specter, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, that gives the president more room to ignore FISA and chokes off any court challenges.

The major difference in the bills - With Feinstein's bill, Bush has to tell the courts who he's investigating.  That's it.  permissions are always granted instantly, there are no slowdowns.  he jsut has to tell the system who he's watching and why.  And he is fighting that.

Can ANYONE, and I mean anyone, please tell me why exactly Bush would even want this power?

I mean, can even the most ardent Bush supporter tell us why he wnats to keep his activities secret from the courts?
