Well I have been sick for the last week and a half with severe strep throat feeling like shit.  I just now got back to the gym, bench press seemed light so I went up 20 pounds no problem and 10 on incline dumbbell press.

I guess the rest just helped or what?  I was sure I would be weaker.   Huh

Its got nothing to do with sickness and everything to do with good solid rest.  You're always going to lift more on your triumphant return from a week off.  Less common when you're sick but assuming you eat ok you'll probably be fine.

I can always lift more after a week off so I use that to my advantage when I consider myself burning out.  Any compound movement is going to be heavily affected by a full rest of all the contributing muscles.

you should periodise you training esp cardio and uild it up steadily or you will find you become tired and weaker and eventually ill.

Experience will help but just remember to think mid to long term rather than instant results.

The last time I got sick (+- 4 years ago) I lost a lot of strength and some weight (I caugth a flu)! It took me 2 weeks to reach the normal level!
