Body dysmorphia and Eating Disorders
« on: September 21, 2006, 02:31:35 PM »
I saw a childhood friend of mine yesterday who has (IMO) had body dysmorphia since she was about 11 years old.

She was average sized in high-school and went on "Nutrisystem."

Later in her life she went from eating no beef, to later eating no flesh at all including fish.  That would be fine but she seems to barely eat anything now and looks emaciated.

When I saw her after we had chatted a bit (we usually chat on the phone), I asked her if she had lost more weight.  She said she didn't think so.

When I had to leave, we hugged goodbye and it was like I was hugging a skeleton.   :(

I see it all the time.

There's a woman at the gym who looks to be about 80 and that's no exaggeration.  She cranks the incline trainer up as high as it goes (I think 30%) and hangs on like she's climbing a mountain.  She is litterally skin and bones.  I also see her jogging around the area at all hours of the day and night.  She's only 59.

Another gal, about 26 comes in and runs on the TM for about an hour, weight lifts (the same thing EVERYDAY) for about 2 1/2 hours, then gets on the elliptical for an hour.  Again, no exaggeration.  It's common to see her going from noon til 5.  Her calorie intake is under 800/day.  No matter what I say (and she's always asking questions), she won't listen.  Hers is a slipprey slope I've been watching get worse over the past 6 months.

On top of that, she keeps telling everyone she's trying to get pregnant, but her husband is where the problem lies  ::)

Yeah... it's her husband, sure... besides the fact that her body couldn't handle the stress of being pregnant & having a child. That's just so sad.

It seems like it :(
Very sad. I knew someone in university with anorexia. She would litterally go to the washeroom after every meal. She looked great but in her head she that she was very fat. What a sad situation. Glad she sought help and got over it. I think professional help is the best route when dealing with that.
