How much do bodybuilders really need to drink and why?

I just heard some guy talking about 2 gallons a day... rediculus.   It's amazing these guys don't die of water intox.

What's the reason behind this?

5 to 6 litres of fluid a day is enough. During winter a bit less, during summer a bit more, it could reach 2 gallons.

It's not that much, just spread it. In the morning two glasses,
before sleeping two glasses,
during training half a gallon, other types of fluid like tea, two cups, some orange-juice, about 2 glasses, during supper I drink something, and so on.

BTW,
I weigh well over 250,
if you weigh less, you could accomplish the day with less.

You might want to do some research about it...

just remember what your body is mainly composed of...water.

it would make sense to keep a body composed of mostly water well hyrdrated correct?

i can easily drink 2 gallons a day...water is all i drink for many reasons. in the morning i'll have some coffee but the rest of the day is water, tea or milk.

It's not about the amount of water you can drink,
but what would be appropiate.

Cause if you drink to much, you'll only pee multiple times a day. And to much water does damage, or makes you feel dizzy cause your sodium levels are dropping.

If you're pee doesn't smell and/or isn't dark,
you're drinking enough.

Just remember that certain ingredients make your pee dark like coffee, certain vegeatables, etc

And about research,
http://www.factsmart.org/h2o/h2o.htm

It started once as the (in)famous 8x8 and turned into something stupidious. You already getting a lot of fluid out of other foods. Fruit and vegetables contain mainly water, meat contains mainly water ;D , if you bake it/cook it it still contains a shittload of water, potatoes contain a shitload of water, cooked rice triples/qaudriples in size etc etc etc.

There is absolutely no study that justifies the massive amount of water.

I drink between 1 gal and 1.5 gal per day at 220 lbs.  I would be concerned about going over the 1.5 gal. given the potential side effects.

Im at 223 and drink 2 gals a day....

After a couple weeks, your bladder gets used to the high fluid amounts and you stop pissing every 20 mins

Thirst means you are dehyrated to some degree...

it takes at least 1 gallon a day for my urine to be clear all afternoon...

it takes an extreme amount of water to harm you in any way, most people couldn't come close to drinking "too much"...

that study is interesting but i'd rather follow what works for myself...if i don't drink enough water throughout the day i'm cotton mouthed and extremely thirsty when i hit the gym.

Water deficiency can cause catabolism. Ensure plenty of water is consumed whilst using creatine.

My best gains were when I was drinking about 5 litres of water a day.
