Cutler the next Samir?
« on: October 01, 2006, 01:46:41 AM »
When Jay won the Night of Champions, I was coming off an 8 year layaway from the sport.  I saw his physique and immediately saw him as the next Mr. O.  After his second place showings, I saw his drive increase dramatically.  No matter the change in judging standards, public views of steroid usage, or the traditional invincibility of reigning mr. o's, his perseverance has stamped his name in bodybuilding history as one of the greatest.  However, after seeing some of the other competitors this weekend....how long will he hold up?  His waist is bigger, his lines are getting smaller, and his strengths are disappearing.  I think the guy's great, but with physique's as big as and aesthetic as dexter's or even vic's, how long can he hold out?   :-\

Good post, btw!

I agree with you. Jay is good and he deserves the props - and a mr.o.
But... maybe he can hold on to it for another year.

thank you...
and despite showings, I figured politics would either break records with coleman or crown a new king...not an expected one....this truly shocked me.  I hope that's not the point!

This is a great thread. Jay will be a one year hit.  Think about it, a lot of years he took second he could have placed 3rd or even 4th.  Dexter should have been runner up twice now.  Gustavo didnt even get compared to him last year.  Jay hasnt been dominant in any Olympia except 2001 and 2005 (slightly).  Jay just doesnt have that physique that blows away the rest of the field.  He did beat Ronnie last night.  He didnt beat Vic IMO or melvin and dexter.  Ronnie is obviously on the decline so he dominated a shell of a champion who MIGHT have held on too long and wasnt forthcoming about injuries he suffered.  Vic is in line.  He proved it last night.
Truly STOP WHINING

Victor Martinez in my eyes, is the winner. Cutler second. Coleman third.

Good thoughts here. BUT, I think two factors are MORE important here than any weakness on Jays part.
1. With last nights win , it sends a clear signal that the Mr Olympia will be the best overall PHYSIQUE on stage that day. When you consider all the aspects  of size, hardness, shape, cuts, etc, Jay did have the best overall package.
While I am not a size only rules kind of fan, I do think it is one of the key componets overall. At any rate last night shows that a better physique can and will win the Olympia, and yes, size will always be important in winning it.

2. By looking at the overall physique as the winner, it does open the door for other top guys to have a legit shot at the title. You are 100% correct that a lot of guys like Dexter, Heath and Freeman look awesome and could challenge Jay next year. This makes this interesting and adds a lot of excitement for us fans.
With all due respect to big Ronnie, the man is now , what, 42, and even he is human.

Age isn't that big of a factor, when you consider that Chris Dickerson won the Olympia at 42 or 43. His mentor, Bill Pearl, won the NABBA Mr. Universe (at that time, the most prestigious contest in the world), at age 41.

Age does seem like a factor when you think about the gear these guys shoot nowabouts and most of 'em prolly don't have that much longer to live with organs that function on their own.

eceryone keeps talking about victor, well his waist isnt that small and although hes more aesthetic than jay his legs suck so his symmetry isnt the greatest.  if you truley wanted someone with size, symmetry, and aesthetics itd have to be dex(whos legs suck also) or melvin.  so all in all they all have their weaknesses and when standing next to a monster like jay its hard to look at the waist when his legs, arms, and delts make the smaller waist guys look just that "smaller"
