Although i work in a bar, i find i do call people "hun" or "love"...then again, i'm probably the oldest bartender around and most of the people that come in there are in their early to mid 20's...
BUT, it would be pretty irritating to have some young person say that to me.

She probably didn't mean anything by it but I can see it as being disrespectful if taken the wrong way. thats like me walking in there and saying, "Hey kid, can you help me with this"?

I'm not a fan of that either but like others said before me, they could totally ignore you or call you worse.

I usually say  "Thanks Bitch"   :)

What I hate is when people make your name into a nickname and you don't really know them.

      I get Ames.      >:(      No it's AAAAAAAAAA-MMEEEEEEEEEE!!!

      Amy!     Got it bitch/bastard?      >:(

I used to HATE it when I was called maam.   >:(

About 10yrs ago, my girlfriend's 14 yr old son used to call me 'maam' & 'Miss Judi' and I absolutely hated it.

Then 3 yrs ago, while in Austin TX, I had this 25yr old absolute stud muffin call me ma'am...

{blush} ...I liked it. I really liked it. {giggle} Now, I'm at a point where it doesn't bother me anymore, and I just accept it as a sign of respect... (as well as a source of titilation especially coming from a hunk.)  :P

I used to bitch about being called "honey" or "sweetie" until someone elucidated me to the fact that someday I'd get old and only wish someone would call me that.  :'(

You forgot "dude", "buddy", "pal" and "mac".  Those are the other names guys are called when "sir" is not used.

Well then, you can understand our resentment for being called Maam.  lol

It's hard to know what to call people.  When if I have to refer to someone that I don't know in such terms, I call older men "sir", younger men "hun", older women or those around my age "dear" and younger women/girls "honey/sweetie".

I hear ya Cheri, I guess it all in how you present it in your voice tone or wording. If I wroked in a store and beautiful women came in all day I certainly would not be calling them "dear" or "maam", thats for sure. What ever happened to the old "Can I help you with anything"?

Being called Ma'am has never bothered me.  I guess because I am a woman of a "certain age".

Besides, if it's good enough for the Queen of England, it's good enough for me.
