sort of. they discovered he was born without kidneys at all do to some hereditary condition. they speculation that without his dedication to bodybuilding and fitness he wouldn't have even lived this long.   

just another inspirational bodybuilding story.

I was on the AAU Mr America judging panel in 1991.
I remember being very impressed with his dense muscularity as were most of the judges.
Joe had the rugged looking classic physique from what I consider the greatest period in bodybuilding.
He had a unique looking physique and despite barely knowing him, I never forgot him as a bodybuilder.

Joe was a friendly , out going man and was humble in victory.
He was always proud of being a bodybuilder and loved being known as Mr America.

RIP  Joe, you will be missed.

Joe trained at Golds Venice in the early & mid 1990's. I saw Joe and spoke with Joe on an almost daily basis.  He was always met you with an easy smile and a friendly handshake.

Big strong man. Moved some heavy weights.

A picture of joe hanged on the wall of my third gym, was a Universal poster if i remember well. Even on that picture i already noticed his nipples.
