Wow, that was enlightening!!!! I never expected that your arms could give out and the weights can come crashing down on your head when you're holding them up in the air!!! Thanks for the information tidbit Mom!!!!!!!!
-
I have had an injury but not an accident. I did see someone have an accident. Doing dumbbell presses and his spotter wasnt paying attention and the weight fell on face. 70lbs right in the kisser. 4 teeth fell out and a broken nose.

I can feel you on that!! Tore my right pec 6 years ago doing incline flyes.

hell yeah. One day, After I was done benching, I was pulling a 45 plate off the bar, and it slipped. If I didn't pull my right leg out of the way on time, that shit would have definitely fell and break my toe. I could just imagine how painful that shit would have been, had it happened :'( :'(

A few, your odd strain and sprain from heavy lifting.
Two tendon tears,
1st one, quadricep tendon tear from losing balance from barbell lunges with free weights, took about 1 year to fully recover.
2nd injury, achilles tendon rupture, from single leg calf raise on calf machine, took about 4 months to walk right
All this occured from lack of being safe, 20/20 hindsight
what else, shoulder dislocation at birth, broken nose when swing hit me in the park when I was a little kid

I tore my right one too. Did you tear it off the bone or off the muscle?

Dude those are 2 nasty injuries to have! Especially the achilles. How does that treat ya now?
-
I personally haven't had any accidents happen to me but have seen some that just made my head shake. Stuff that is just total commen sense. Example? I've seen a member bench pressing with a gym staff spotting him, or lack there of, and as the member was pressing it up his balance was way off [right arm pressing higher than the left] and wouldn't you know, the staff didn't help him and all the weights slid off one end of the bar with the weights falling from the other end.
Needless to say, this made quite a noise and embarrassment for the guy - and the gym staff. ::)
-

Off the bone. I have a huge gap now on my right side. Never bothered to have it fixed.
-
Dude those are 2 nasty injuries to have! Especially the achilles. How does that treat ya now?
yeah they were. The quad tear was actually worse, far more painful in terms of physical therapy, surgery, restrengthening
The achilles tendon injury wasn't painful when it happen, in fact I thought the machine stand had broken not my tendon, after I stepped off the machine I tried to walk and the floor felt concave, looked down at my right calf and there was no tone, just flat.
No real issues now, it sometimes clicks in the area, its not quiet as strong as the other side, but I can still do two leg inverted calves raises with 12 45lb plates for about 10 reps, along with all types of plyos.
No problem with my quad tendon at all, in fact that side is stronger than the side that was never injuried.
I've seen people blow out their knees from lunging, seen people drop barbells on their chest from benching, tear shoulders, comes with the teritory when lifting aggressively

the only thing i've done, is let an 80 pounder fall on my face whilst doing bench - same story as the last guy, my tri just failed on me, and the dumbell hit me on the forehead (luckily!). I had a bump there for a bit, but that's all.
My mate on the other hand, made a real mess of his hand. We were both warming up on bench (not spotting each other for the warm-up). He'd just finished a set of incline with a pair of 35kgs. He sat up, let his arms swing down by his sides and down towards the floor - one dumbell landed cleanly on the floor (as usual) the other dumbell landed on another that some dude had just left there. His index finger and middle finger were cruched between the 35kg and the plates on the DB on the floor...
... he lost most of his middle finger, and the index finger was saved - just!... it now looks like a claw!?
If there's one thing i've learnt, never train with loads of other DBs around you on the floor. Either tidy them up, or make the c u n t who left them there sort them out. I've had numerous arguements with people who do their set and then leave their shit all over the show... it pisses me right off!

I had an accident in my pants.
-
I was present when a guy was leg pressing about 2... Much and detached his right biceps at the lower insertion. He was holding himself in the sled with his hands. He just screamed so loud, like someone just whaled on him. Bystanders claimed to have heard a 'rip' sound like a t-shirt being torn quickly. I just know that this man was in his early 50's and had his biceps roll up like a venecian blind in his arm. The Dr. recommended not re attaching it because of the risk for re- injury at his age. To this day it looks like a baseball tucked under flacid skin. He's not impressing anybody now. Pretty sick to see in person though.
-
Quite a few years back.....a trainer partner & I were performing flat dumbbell presses. We were using the heaviest dumbbells in the gym.
Anyways...I performed my set.....then my training partner performed his. On the last rep as he was letting the dumbbells back to the floor....about 2-3 inches from the floor....the dubbell broke & all the plates crashed down.
The dumbbell was the pro style which utilize 10lb plates & are bolted on the end. Apparently the threads stripped & pulled loose after years of abuse. We tried to put the bolt back in but all the threads were gone. We were just lucky it didn't happen during the exercise.

My Uncle dropped a Barbell on a kids head back in 86 while doing a heavy set of standing overhead presses. The father of the kid had let him in to the Gym for some unknown reason and just let him run loose. The boy was only 6 and was in Hospital for weeks with Brain Trauma. My Uncle felt terrible for the kid so he still sends money to BillyGuns to this day.

Guys,
You all should know that none of these accidents are your fault. The gym is responsible for providing spotters on all exercises, including leg extensions. They are also responsible for miscellaneous dumbbells laying around on the floor that you may trip over or crush your finger when you put down your dumbbell on a mislaid dumbbell. The gym is also responsible for machine failures, loose dumbbell plates, and improperly weighted barbell plates that cause one side of the plates to slide off. They're also responsible for you slipping on sweaty or chalk-laden floors, sitting on an errantly laid 20 gauge needle, and sexual assaults in the male locker room.
I have obtained extremely favorable settlements involving all of the above types of cases with the exception of the leg extensions. I did however, obtain a favorable settlement when a piss-poor spotter of a gym trainer gave me a lift on a 315 (okay 225) incline barbell and he pushed it forward right out of my hands and it fell onto my chest, causing me to undergo extreme pain and suffering and permanent injury and mental anguish that will continue for the remainder of my natural life.
Remember, your gym accident lawyer is always here to answer your gym-injury questions.

When I was reading your first post,i thought you would talk about pec tear.
Be careful.
i know 3 people torn at least.
One of them told me.He tore with bench press with 4 plates each side in 6th rep.
I was flipped when he told me that the guy about 15m away from him can listen the sound of tearing pec.
Scare!!
And also i was surprised at truth which he told me that he didnt feel pain when he tore.

I have had only two. I snapped my achilles playing racquetball and I cut the end of my nipple off with the plates. Not bad for 30+ years in the gym

Figgs,
I am disappointed in you. Everyone must remember the five rules of injuries:
TOP FIVE RULES OF INJURIES
1. It's never your fault.
2. The fault lies with the party who has insurance or deep pockets.
3. If you have health insurance, go to the ER and go for PT, OT, MRI, CTSCAN, XRAYS, and Rehab.
4. The statute of limitations is THREE YEARS in most states for personal injuries.
5. Even if you think you're not hurt or your doctor says it's nothing, trust your lawyer to find serious and permanent injuries.
Remember, if you want to live the life of a Pro, it all starts with dumping the 9-5 job. Compensatory damages are TAX FREE per IRS code.

I tore my damn pec 2 months ago benchpressing. It's totally derailed my competition plans for a long damn time.
To anyone who benches heavy: don't do it anymore.
Benching heavy won't cause pec tear. What cause pec tear are; improper form, not warming up properly, and overtraining.

That is actionable. The failure of the gym management to ensure that such hotness was spread around the gym and not congealing in one place was directly responsible for your anal fissure, tearing, clothing damage, drycleaning bill, nausea, headaches and emotional distress. hey thanks dude. actually benching heavy does cause pec tears. or i guess what is your definition of "heavy." i was plenty warm as i was on my 5th set and it happened on the 6th rep and i use better form than anybody on bench press. thanks for your input though.

This is a true story - I knew the guy it happened to (though not very well).
I believe this guy was Lebanese (though that has nothing to do with anything - just setting the background)
He was training with one of the top bodybuilders in my gym at the time doing leg press. Well this top bodybuilder was a seriously strong guy and kept upping the weight on the sled and this lebanese guy tried to keep up. He managed to for a few sets before this happened...
one of his nuts unravelled and I mean actually physically uncoiled in his sack (I guess from straining so hard).
We all felt pretty bad for him but it kept us amused for weeks...

I call bullshit. Its not like there would be an increase in pressure in that area! Anyone with a medical background that can confirm or debunk this story?

I saw a kid in high school doing flat bench dumbell flyes. He didnt clean the 25lbs plates laying on both sides of him, so when he dropped the weight he was still holding on to the dumbells. He hit the dumbells with the plates laying on the floor thus popping half of his middle finger off.. Blood shot out like in the movies :o !!!!!!

Gym accidents...oh boy, have I seen plenty over some 5 decades of training! One of the scariest incidents was when I was into back BB quarter and half squats in my middle teens. I finished up with my sets and walked off and left the loaded bar, some 700-800 lbs., on what was then called an "iron staircase" support rack.
Right next to this loaded bar on the rack was a vertical leg press machine and some older business man was in the process of doing a set of leg presses on it. His body and head were resting on a pad just below, and to the right, of the racked loaded bar. Well, some guy goes to the other/left side of the bar and, you guessed it, starts pulling plates just off of that end of the bar!
Well...there was this rumble and then BOOM as the bar flipped over, slammed into the floor, tore a chunk out of the leg press machines' pad, missing the man's body/head by about 6 inches (!), bending the bar, and spewing plates all over the place! Of course, the guy, using the leg press machine at the time, was catatonic!
Besides getting justly royally chewed out by the gym's owner, I had to pay for replacement of the leg press machine's pad and buy a new Olympic bar...quite a chunk of change for a 16 yr. old!
Anyway, thank God no one was hurt and i wasn't kicked out of the gym. After that tragic dumb incident, I've always "broken down" my bars when I've finished using them!
-
wow that was close. Lots of young guys make this mistake though, they think the bar won't flip.
-
Well, some guy goes to the other/left side of the bar and, you guessed it, starts pulling plates just off of just that end of the bar!
This is no. 1. There will always be at least one idiot who unloads one end of a heavy bar without thinking to hold the bar down. Immediately creating an explosive disaster. You're very lucky you're still not paying legal bills.
Or the dolt doing heavy squats who didn't want to find spotters..

Technically, the gym should place their machines at a better distance instead of having the plates sitting right above the leg press.

I unracked only one side of squat rack about 20 years ago and luckily nothing came of it.
As a teen I did the same and of my home bench and it put a small dent in the counter.
-
I was curling with a BB and apparently the end had come loose somehow.
Just as i set the BB back on the squat rack, the end fell off and it flipped a good 5 feet to the opposite side.
Luckily nobody was standing there.
Cable snapped on lat pulldown machine, but again it was good timing as it was at the top.
