Title: Pro Bodybuilers Turning to Acting
Post by: chainsaw on January 31, 2007, 06:43:20 AM
I have to say, that bodybuilders "pro" that is, that try to use bodybuilding as a vehicle for an acting career are pretty much doomed.  A repeat of Arnold, or Steve Reeves is highly unlikely.  These guys all really stood out in their time even against other bodybuilders they competed against.  Louie had it good as well for the hulk, but quickly got typecasted and his hearing might have inhibited him.  I hate to be negative, but I belive it is true.

It saddens me to see these guys have high hopes, just to be crushed.  I think I read that Jay Cutler wants to get into acting.  I hope he was kidding.  I like Jay, but stay with what has been workin in the past i.e endorsements muscle tech, or become a chemist and make/market you're own line i.e.  Labrada, Gaspari.

Jay would be perfect to play Leatherface in Chainsaw Massacre!!

He just has to grunt an puff and whirl a chainsaw around. Even a monkey could do that.  ;D

I'd like to see Jay portray a nazi assassin in some world war II spy movie. Breaking peoples neck with his bare hands kinda stuff.

That would actually be really cool. Remember that big-ass Turk (or whatever he was) who boxes with Indiana Jones in Raiders until he gets sliced up by the airplane propeller? Imagine the flabby-titted Harrison Ford having to go up against a shirtless uber-Aryan Jay in the new Indy film...

"Oh, shit..."

I could imagine that. But getting to become a huge star or even get reoccuring roles, it doesn't seem likely for any of them that I have seen to date qualify as an electrifing figure to watch on the big screen.  I've been known to be wrong, but rarely.

well, there was one Arnold and one steve reeves. these days, there are just too many meatheads who want to be actors, and the studios couldn't careless. they're looking for talents, and how many of these meatheads have talents

So true. You have to admit that in Arnold's, or especially Reeves era, a body like this was a sensation and absolutely rare to find. Nowadays there are sooooooo many guys with a good body. In showbiz a trained physique is absolutely standard and a MUST-HAVE nowadays (no matter if in acting; music, or whatever), the rest is luck and hard work. But just a good body is no guarantee for a big-time Hollywood career anymore, these times are over. There're too much Hardbodys out there today. (Isn't it so @Chick??; How's your Hollywood career going?? ;D)

you guys are being way to short sighted. Hollywood is like the fashion industry, it changes all the time. Its only a matter of time before any particular type is in. Just a matter of time.

it's hard to break into acting for everyone.  of the hundreds of people who move here to give it a shot, maybe 1 or 2 do well enough to make a living out of it.  the rate of success for bodybuilders becoming successful actors is probably no different than for everyone else.

here is a list of bodybuilders (http://www.musclememory.com/movies/byBber.html) who have been in movies.

well, I have a technical reason (my ISP had cut off php's access to exec() so I couldn't run my script to update the list), but I figured out a workaround (submit it to chron) and it's now there.

You can add Pete Grymkowski to that list and that list doesn't have Manny Perry on it. After Arnold I would say Manny Perry easily has made more money in Hollywood than any other bb ever.  Louie I would say is in 3rd.

background work is not something for which you can quit your day job

Pete Grymkowski...  Manny Perry

Grymkowski is not in imdb.com, at least that I can find.

Perry is primarily a stunt-man, and I don't have a list of stunt men.  But I see he's listed in IMDB as an actor for a few movies, so I will include him.

hollywood favours lean over bulk, arnie was an exception, stallone would look too short if he was bulky so it suits him to be ripped

So you are saying I should stay in professional bodybuilding?

Sorry to burst your bubble but I have bigger dreams.

just as you should speak a line before claiming that you're a working actor, you should step on a stage before claiming to be a competition bodybuilder.

Why not?  Hollywood has already made every other lame assed comic book/cartoon into a movie since they've run out of ideas.

What's next, Voltron?  Thundercats?  Scooby Doo?  Wait, they did that one already.

Jay has a great look for acting. He'd be the American jock/football stud. If he trimmed down he'd have no problem playing the action star.

I could see these bodybuilders in these roles:

Jay Cutler in Captain America, or flash, Aquaman, Eddie Brock (venom from spiderman 3 instead of that bag of bones from the 70's show)

Markus Ruhl (Juggernaut from X-man, or bad guy nazi type, or any scary movie)

Bob Chick (Twins: 2007 the remake, IN SOPRANOS HED BE AN AWESOME HENCHMEN to Tony, Cop type, or Italian bad guy role)

Ronnie (dude that makes all the noises with his mouth from Police Academy thatd be hilarious, built silent cop type )

Stan Mquay (Squanto, Any asian super hero role, asian thug, young samurai, Lui kang mortal kombat role )

Dexter (Ninja Turtles)

Victor (Cuban mob-boss henchmen, strong macho type football player role)

One thing you need to know abiout IMDB, it is far from complete and accurate.  Pete was the double for Ferrigno in the Hulk along with Manny.  Manny holds  SAG card.  He also appeared in Kentucky Fried Movie and several others wiht Jackie Chan.  He was John Candy's stunt double.  Manny has easily made more in Hollywood than any other BB except Arnold.  Louie has made ALLOT of money to.  And if any BB has made more than Manny it would be Louie.

I'm sure there are hundreds of bodybuilders who have done background work, and many who have been stunt men.  But since I can't watch every movie, nor would I recognize every bodybuilder, my list is limited to those who received film credit, which usually means having a speaking role.  The IMDB is very good at listing those who's names are listed in the credits.
