base price for a pool with plaster bottom and anywhere from 3 to 9 feet in depth with no larger than 80 foot perimeter is 24 thousand. that comes with 300 square feet of salted concrete and your basic pumps/filtration sytem.    as to how you shape your 80 feet of perimeter...thats completely up to you. no difference in cost.

the older you get (more experience) the more you will make, but it's also ideal to be young.   If you have both you're very lucky.

plus the cost of living varies significantly.  50k is a lot more in some states than others.

I don't know about that.  I mean yes,  that should be the case,  but I have been in the IT field for 13 years and even though I have a shitload of real world experience these dumbass CEO's and upper management types always want the person with the masters with very little experience.  These people do not know jack shit about I.T. but dictate the qualifications.  Very sore subject with my ass.  If any of these "CEO's" around here want to explain, then I am all ears.  I KNOW 3/4 of the board here are CEO's right?

you know bast i used to think that all i cared about in life was being as rich ass possible as goiong as far in politics as possible. to be rich enough to buy anything i want, and to have the power to change the world for the better. and while i still do want both of those things; i realize now that i will be perfectly happy as long as i have enough money to  make payments on a car, a house, buy food, and i have a wife who is beautiful, intelligent, and that "gets me".

...totally off the subject.. lol.

my girlfriend now is fucking amazing. she is the reason why i realized this....because i dont care about the money i have or what othe rpeople thinki of me or anything like that..all i care about is being with her.  now of course i am young; and we havent known eachother that long..but i could see myself marrying this woman.

Unfortunate.

No bullshit here.  My wife and I were at Applebees and these "bigwig" types were across from us.  You know the type.  Cellphones ringing constantly, they talk really loud to let everyone know they are somebody (in their mind).  They start shouting basically about numbers, projections, changes,  blah blah blah.  They were late 40's to 50's.  Then I hear them talking about some employees.  One of them says "Yeah he is really good with the internet and windows"

These are the cocksuckers that piss me off.  I have the certifications and all that crap but no degree.  maybe I will go back to cagefighting.

I'm not a CEO, but am a CTO (in 2 companies now  ;D )...and you've been interviewing w/ the wrong people if you've been talking to CEO's. That's strike 1 against you Mr. Smarty Pants.

And, proofs in the pudding. What have you done that's amazing/unique in your field? I may need a kickass IT guy sometime in the next couple months. But you can say all the shit you want -- until you show something you've done that's going to blow me away, I agree with the dickhead "CEO"'s...get a little piece of paper saying you're qualified or shut your trap.

Salary means n.o.t.h.i.n.g. On the extreme, Steve Jobs makes a whopping $1/year. On the other extreme, me and my friends who own very successful companies (#1's in their fields) all make around $50k/year (because they aren't stupid with their money, and only take what they need to live)...but have OWNERSHIP. So when they sell out, they make millions.

Lemmings have salaries. Sheep are proud of their salaries.

Chief Technical Officer.

And, no...real world experience, imo, counts MORE than the stupid piece of paper. Hell, one of the best programmers I know only went to ITTech for a couple years before dropping out. But, fucken hell, he programmes some of the most amazing shit. And, when I interviewed him, he SHOWED me some of this awesome shit he had made...so I ignored his shit paper qualifications in favor of his awesome real-world.

But what I'm saying w/ windsor88 is that 99% of the time, guys who are pissed at college educated people, and spout about how good real-world experience is, blah, blah, blah...don't have SHIT to back up their claim. Ok, so they are better than a guy who graduated from MIT in IT? Fucken-a, before you go off saying that bullshit you had better fucken have the most awesome thing you've made to show me to prove it.

...if not, you're a liar and dillusional.

It is complete bullshit that people would disregard or underestimate the power of education.  Especially if it's undergrad studies.  Getting my MBA opened up so many avenues in my life.  I've been on both sides as I got my MBA later(27) in life.  The MBA opened up doors due to the fact that it taught me so much from understanding detailed financials to making critical decisions that impact your company positively....... I'm making a bold statement here and stating that an MBA pretty much guarantees you at least 120k to start.

Course. But there are a lot of dingdongs with MBA's.

And, on the other hand, there are a lot of dingdongs w/ no education.

Which is why...yet again...I said: proof's in the pudding.

Geeze, for educated people, it's hard to get a point across w/o you all picking on one aspect and missing the idea as a whole...

Which is why...yet again...I said: proof's in the pudding.

Geeze, for educated people, it's hard to get a point across w/o you all picking on one aspect and missing the idea as a whole...

Hmm not picking on one aspect.  Just speaking from experience.  I've been in the businees workforce, mainly software, without a degree, with a bachelors, and with an MBA.  Having an MBA gives anybody a distinct advantage. The practical knowledge you get from and MBA can't be argued.

Interview, sure...take 15 min to hear him out.

Hire? Depends on what he can show me...I interviewed that guy who was an ITT drop-out didn't I? And was totally blown away...

heh, I've been there for a while -- check the training log. Just did legs today...

Since your doing interviews what sort of established process do you use?  Have you read Top Grading, if not read it.  It will give you great insight and make that process for hiring that much easier and effective.

When i was at uni, i always thought i should get an MBA (I studied business & economy) but then i realized it was useless since the market is so full of them that it's kinda hard to try to get a good job, when you have like 100 peeps with the same goal.

So what i did? I took a plane to china for 1 month, back when i was 25, and visited many factories and then i realized i was late on the train, so i got on and now im 28, buying every month many thousands dollars from china, and making more than what a good mba would have gave me.

Its not about how many degrees you get but the eye of the tiger in business :)

Well to actually have an opportunity to interview for a higher position, at least for the company I work for,  you have to have a college degree in I.T. related curriculum  and 5 years experience for just a entry level helpdesk position.  This was changed after I came aboard.  So at this point I am stuck.  In your example the programmer could in fact show you what they have done.  In my case as a Server administrator what the fuck am I gonna show?  And yes I do have paper.  All of these useless certifications that was, at the time, the only thing that mattered in I.T.  No I never interviewed with a CEO or CTO but that is only because the I.T. managers hands are tied.  They are instructed only to interview people with the qualifications set by the high up non-technical people.  By the way...CTO doesn't mean jack shit.  I worked for Harrah's and the CTO was the Finance Director.  The dude was clueless when it came to infrastructure issues, etc. The only thing he chimed in about was the fucking budget.

Yeah the eye of the tiger only gets you so far.  You need understand business to run one or even be effective for that matter.  So your buying many thousands of what?  And how are you importing?  Chinese are very poor manufaturers.  I visited a tier one auto supply factory in Ningbo China, wow they are so behind.  Lot's of growth though.

Yeah, that's bullshit. Companies run like those are usually dumps -- you would probably slit your wrists after a couple months working at places like those anyhow. I consulted at Quest Software and my "boss" was a guy w/ an MBA who had NO clue about software...so that's pretty rampant in medium/large companies w/ lots of politics and crap.

Yeah, it's hard showing something as an IT guy. But I'd say it can still be done. I had one guy show me his project summary with detailed photos of the servers he set up. Granted, he coulda lied about it being him who set it up...and in this case, he did...so I fired his ass. But same can be said about programmers -- I could show you pretty much any site/software and said I made it...even if I had the source code, I coulda worked on 1 tiny piece of the project and gotten a copy of the whole thing.

Title: Re: What's your annual salary?

so if windsor88 showed up on your doorstep with no degree, but loads of real world experience, would you at least give him the benefit of the doubt and interview him?

see that's the thing.  Garraeth is the exception.  Most CTO's do not interview anyone unless it will be someone reporting directly to him.  Real world guys are everywhere but cannot get anywhere.  Now if you had a CEO or CTO that had started from the bottom and worked their way up, then they would certainly understand that an overpriced piece of paper means nothing in real world situations.

Autoparts.

And as for the the poor manufacturares, i have this idea that they just love money, cash! I remember my first trip, i saw so many business opportunities and all factories asking me for TT or 50% tt 50% lc at sight. So how did i solve it? Simple, i contacted all the factories i met and promised a volume i wasnt even sure i could buy, only if they would accept lc at sight, no tt. Suddenly, most of them were open to accept lc (i guess the word CONTAINERS(PLURAL) made them change their minds) and thats it.
I did my best to not fail in my promise and luckily, it worked all good and this is how i deal with chineses until today.
What i love more is that now i dont accept their rules, but the other way, and when your name is known in whatever you buy, many doors will be open.

I started in shenzhen, then travelled to guanzhou, yiwu, ningbo, qingdao and ended last year in shanghai, where im returning next week to visit some suppliers. I love china, its a country full of chances for those who are starting and have big dreams.

Nice.  We market to automotive OEM's and tier ones.  I have been in several autmotive factories in China.  Yeah you are so right about china providing growth for the world, I know more auto is trying to move there but very unsuccessfully due to the poor level of quality.  India is also a bright spot.  Better quality there too.

India is more expensive though, but i agree quality is way better.

And as for a good advice to anybody willing to make big bucks, copy the chinese way and adapt it to your market. Why having a secretary and 10 employees when you can be the boss and pick the phone, and do the same job as anybody else, with half of the people, pay less, sell cheap.

Quantity+Reasonable Quality+Cheap Price+Low costs = Success in whatever you do :)

Oh, and don't try bullshitting with me with techno speak. Toxy tried that all the time -- what a looser  ::)

Hahahahaha exactly Garraeth. Props to Our little friend "windsor88" (if that's even his real name)

I've been in every possible position in High Tech; from junior engineer all the way to Architect/Product manager. I spent 8 years in Silicon Valley before moving down here. I never "interviewed" with a CEO. If you are, it's either a scam or a shitty startup you don't wanna be part of.

I bet he feels sorry about all the lies they told him at "ITT Technical Institute" ;D

This is a big hole in our economy today, and as well as why so many people are getting laid off. And then you have a high rate of unemployment relying on the gov't to provide them with free healthcare, income, foodstamps and etc.

Instead of keep outsourcing our jobs to foreign countries why not build the growth from within? Don't we have the strongest economy in the world no?

A thought that just hit me, why doesn't JAPAN "outsource" their raw materials or manufacturings and what not? I don't get that, as strong and powerful as we are, we're "outsourcing" most of our jobs to these poor countries. But the japanese do the total opposite  ???

base price for a pool with plaster bottom and anywhere from 3 to 9 feet in depth with no larger than 80 foot perimeter is 24 thousand. that comes with 300 square feet of salted concrete and your basic pumps/filtration sytem.    as to how you shape your 80 feet of perimeter...thats completely up to you. no difference in cost.

What state is that in?  Seems way cheap for Cali..  $50K for a pool here minimum.

you know bast i used to think that all i cared about in life was being as rich ass possible as goiong as far in politics as possible. to be rich enough to buy anything i want, and to have the power to change the world for the better. and while i still do want both of those things; i realize now that i will be perfectly happy as long as i have enough money to  make payments on a car, a house, buy food, and i have a wife who is beautiful, intelligent, and that "gets me".

...totally off the subject.. lol.

my girlfriend now is fucking amazing. she is the reason why i realized this....because i dont care about the money i have or what othe rpeople thinki of me or anything like that..all i care about is being with her.  now of course i am young; and we havent known eachother that long..but i could see myself marrying this woman.
