Title: Should I get a X-Box 360 or a PS3?
Post by: Wiggs on November 08, 2008, 03:35:17 AM
 ???

I've been out of the console world for a while because of school.  I've seen some games I want to play lately e.g. New Fable, GTA 4, Gears of War 2.  X-Box 360 seems to be more popular and have more games but PS3 seems to be more powerful and have better graphics.  In addition it has the Blue-Ray DVD player.  I'm not getting a Wii cause I don't like the games and I don't want to exercise ;D  So which one?

Only bums with lil/no money would ever recommend the Xbox360, because the prize is the only argument where Xbox > PS3.

I've just read 4 articles and looked at youtube video.  I'm going with 360.  PS3 has more potential but has yet to deliver. 360 has many more games and I really don't see the difference in graphics.  Plus 360 is alot cheaper.

I thought the same thing until I read and looked at these comparisons. These links compared the same games on the 360 and PS3 going back to 2007 and the majority either looked or played better on the 360. Now that Netflix will be available through xbox live (including some content in HD), I finally had to go with the 360.

The PS3 is a failure - Sony's getting destroyed on it.

You can get a new Xbox 360 with a 60 gig HD and HDMI for $249.  I've seen it on Dell.com.  There's also an incredible bundle at Costco that gets you an extra controller, Gears2, 1 year of XBox Live, Lego Indi, Fatpanda, and 3 Live! download games for $390

The Xbox just did a much better job this time around.  The online destroys the PS3 in every facet.  The 360 controller is far superior to the flimsy POS that Sony has now put out for three generations.

As far as content, the 360 has exclusives on the Halo franchise and GoW.  Bioshock has better textures on the 360 than the PS3.

The PS3 has blu-ray, yes.  But if companies like Netflix continue to expand their downloadable HD content (another 360 exlusive right now), the blu-ray player will be obsolete soon as well.

I  borrowed a PS3 to play MGS4, but I would never think of buying one.

I would suggest googling PS3 vs XBox.  Find an objective viewpoint other than fanboi sites.

To me, though, it's not even close.

both consoles are good. if we go deep about technology, ps3 wins, sadly, the idiots at sony and the game developers are still living in 1990 so the games being released are not using all the power coming in the ps3. Xbox 360 wins because they do it, so yeah, 360 is your choice no doubt, for now.

Anyone have a modded 360?  Did you buy it elsewhere or do it yourself?  I suck at soldering and would be worried I would void the warranty.  Of course they may have other solutions now...who knows.

I ordered a PS3.  I think Sony will eventually come through.

There is no reason I could come up with to get the 360.  Sony has the Blue Ray which is a bonus.  I'm not in to all the first person shooters.  Sony is much more powerful which I think will pay off down the road.  X-box breaks alot.  X-box is loud and takes longer to load.  I like the PS controllers better.  PS has free online. PS has better graphics.

I hope it works out for you but some of the stuff you said is not true.

I'm not sure about it "paying off down the road".  This generation of consoles are in their third year.  There are already rumors of a "Xbox 720" launch scheduled for 2009.

The old Xbox breaks, new ones not so much, but, even if they do, you get a new one with a three year warranty.   PS has free online because it sucks.  It can't touch the XBox in that capacity.  PS does not have better graphics - take into consideration a game like BioShock - the PS3 couldn't handle the the textures and it looks like crap on the PS3.  The XBox has 512mb of RAM to handle textures, while the PS3 has only 256.   GoW2 could not run on the PS3.  Any game that uses the Unreal 3.0 engine, will suffer on the PS3.

But, like you said, if you're not into FPS and wanted a blu-ray, then the PS3 was probably right for you.  Here's a link I saw to a pretty good deal today.  You buy two blu-ray movies from a select list (300 is one of them - awesome on blu-ray) and you get a PS3 blu-ray remote free.

Online play is great, if you play with friends.  Your skills will improve greatly.  Kids can be annoying at time, but, for the most part, it's very good.  XBox destroys the PS3 in this regard.

Gears 2 definitely deserves the hype.  It's probably the best looking game on any console system ever.

I wouldn't call GTAIV a must have, by any means.  If you go the 360 route, I'd suggest BioShock, GoW 1 and 2, Halo 3, COD2 and 4, and Dead Rising.

Yup.  GTA4 is the same three prior games with better graphics and equally crappy control.  I would only suggest it for those who hadn't played the prior versions.

My friends like Fable II so far, but it's not a game I'll pick up.  After Gears, I'll probably grab Left 4 Dead, since that game brings back true 4 player co-op.

So far Fable 2 is bad ass. Left 4 dead is going to be great. If you dont work as a team then you won't beat the game from what I hear?

I really liked GTA4, but you should pick-up Saint's Row 2. The graphics aren't as good, and not as realistic as GTA4, but the game is a lot of fun. I got it on the PS3, but I also have a 360. Bully is a really fun game on that system. It's even worh playing the ps2 version, if you only have a PS3. But the 360 Scholorship edition has hi-def graphics and added missions.

For 2006 and 2007, almost all the sport games ran much smoother on the 360. But now they are identical, and since I like the controller better, I buy almost everything on the PS3. The dual-shock3 controller is much better than the 6-axis one with the launch PS3's.

You made the right choice Wiggs. If you have a 1080p tv, blue-ray is incredible. I am not into 1st person shooters either. You might want to check out Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank, both great games. And also Heavenly Sword, very short, but a lot of fun. More of a rental, but you could find all of these games used for cheap by now.

    But get Saint's Row 2, it's a blast !

I'm impressed with Microsoft's investment into Xbox.  It's taken 3 years for the '360 to reach the console distribution of the original Xbox (25 million) console.

Microsoft is investing more $ into Xbox as an Entertainment platform with their "New Xbox Experience" set to release tomorrow (Nov. 19).  NetFlix integration for streaming movies, Avatars akin to Nintendo's "Mii" characters, and plenty more new features.

Check it out: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/nxe/

Yes, people I know got in on the beta version and they love it.  At first thought, it appeared to be just a Wii ripoff, but it's apparently not the case at all.

Another way the XBox destroys the PS3.

It depends on your preferences.  I don't think Sony's online gaming can touch XBox Live, I prefer the controller, and the exclusive content that the 360 has.  XBox also streams Netflix better than the PS3.

But, if you're not into online as much, there's plenty of decent games for the PS3, and it's also a great blu-ray player.

The ones with the new jasper drives aren't supposed to do that.

Thats what I hear but they only replace consoles with the same version of the one you originally bought. They know the older one craps out regularly but instead of doing the right thing and replacing it with a newer model they just keep sending out the one with the smaller cooling tray.

I hear you.  I still have the original model with no hdmi port.  I've had two RRoD, and now I get random "disc is unreadable errors".  I actually have to do the old Atari 2600 "blow air in the tray" thing then it works.

What it really means is that my Xbox may crap out again.  I've been lazy and haven't checked if that error is covered under our extended warranty that we got from the RRoDs.

I'm probably going to package my Xbox, an extra controller, 3 mths of Live, and an unopened Sony BDP-BX2 blu ray player for about 250-275 and just use the cash to buy an Elite.

The only reason I haven't done it yet is because of the potential error.   I want to make sure it gets fixed so I don't give anyone a crappy deal.

All of the above that you mentioned. The Elite is supposed to not get the Red Rings of death but my two buddies have already went out within a month. WTF?  >:( PS3 can also play PS1 and PS2 games and i still enjoy playing the original Resident Evil.  8) A Sony Blu-Ray player runs $300 and why not go ahead and get a PS3 which also plays games and has free internet play and you do not have to pay $70 for the X-BOX ear Piece or where that ridiculous one that makes me feel like i am selling people shit on the phone.  >:( My Blu Tooth works for free on the PS3 and i save $70 once again.  8) Sony did start off slow but Microsoft pushed out the X-BOX 360 too fast and is a inferior system. Just look at the two systems and look how shitty that the X-BOX 360 is.  >:(

Sony farms out it's online to a third party, Microsoft doesn't.  Sony's online is far inferior.  Google about the MW2 issues when it came out.  Netflix streaming has issues, etc..  That's stuff you don't want.  Plus, the rumors are building that they're going to charge for it soon.  A lot of games don't have voice support, and you can't communicate with friends who are playing different games.

The new Jasper drive XBoxs don't get the RRod.  The poster who referred to his friends Elites most likely didn't have this drive.  You have to make sure you get the right one.

Sony won't finish first.  They've lost tons of cash on the PS3.  The non-threat of a PS4 is why Microsoft is going to extend the life cycle of the 360 even further.  Check out videos for Project Natal - that is going to be some cool shit.

Did my posts in the thread give you the impression that I don't know what I'm taking about?

It's fine if you enjoy your PS3, it's all subjective.  I just think Earl should have all the facts, and some of the stuff you were saying was just wrong.

But, as far as the Xbox not even being close in the race with the PS3, you're right - Microsoft destroyed Sony by a large margin.  All the data supports this.

An Earl, as far as backward compatibility,I should have said you will have it if you  can find a launch console, or one of the repackaged MGS editions.  But still not with the PS3 Slim.

I guess my friends brand new X-BOX 360'S ELIETES just quit working for no reason and they were brand new. Why would i need a launch console to play backward compatibility?? I bought a 80 GB and does everything that i want and more. My X-BOX 360 Elite just sits there and gets no love because it is a inferior gaming system. What scared most people away from the PS3 was the price.

You can still buy Elites with the old drives.  Like I said, you have to check.

Earl would need a launch console for backward compatibility since the new ones don't have it.

The Xbox is not inferior, and I'm not a Sony hater - I have a PS3.  The Xbox 360 just did everything better, outside of blu-ray and certain types of streaming, and had better exclusive titles.   Look at the numbers - they tell the story.   As far as price point - the Xbox beat Sony AGAIN this holiday season, even after the price drop.

Nobody's telling you not to enjoy your console, and nobody's telling you you're wrong to do so.   I'm just trying to give Earl both side of what's really going on.  When you say incorrect stuff like the slim is backwards compatible and that you have to buy a $70 headset for the Xbox, it could sway him to make a decision he might regret.

Don't kid yourselves, the PS3 also has it's own version of the Ring of Death. The PS3 controller sucks compared to the 360 and the graphics are still inferior to the XBOX although they have been improving lately. The 360`s disc reader is loud as fuck, no doubt about that. I got my head set with my console so I don't know where this $70 charge is coming from, there are all sorts package options out now that come with different titles and components, so you can choose what suits your needs.

Overall they are both great systems but I`ll still perfer to stick with my 360 despite having to go through 2 of them already.

resident evil, grand theft auto, god of war, silent hill, nhl

i'd say those are my favorites, the only ps3 exclusive is god of war

i mostly prefer action/adventure type games with a good story

i'm interested in the uncharted series on ps3, mass effect for 360

i likes shooters too, 360 has better exclusives but thsoe can be played on the computer

The trouble with PC gaming is that the whole hacker community destroyed it - i.e. now even the biggest release of all time, MW2, doesn't give them their own servers.

If you enjoy FPS shooters and want to play them online, XBox is the way to go.  Since the games sell so many more copies on the Xbox than the PS3, you're always  going to have a chance to get a better game.

Mass Effect 1 was eh, but Mass Effect two was very good, and I think it was the best selling January release ever.  Gears of War 1 & 2 were excellent.  Bioshock was amazing, and looks better on the XBox.  In fact, most games are developed for the XBox first, then adapted to the PS3.  It why games like Bioshock looked so much better.

The thing about the Sony exclusives, is that they don't sell so well.  So many of the supposed "console sellers were retail flops.  The Xbox has a much better track record.

As for Doug's DVD comment, I'm not sure what he means by that.  The 360 plays DVDs fine.

All that said, there's nothing wrong with the PS3.  The God of War series is excellent, and MGS is my favorite ever.  I just don't think it's enough to recommend the PS3 over the XBox.

GoW is an excellent series.  I have the remastered 1&2 for the PS3 right now.  There's a demo on it for 3.   But it's just one game.

The Gears of War series is flat out great, and Halo's appeal is the online multiplayer.  Looks at the sales per console of these games in relation to killzone, etc...

As for the controller, Sony's made no upgrades since the PSOne.  The best feature about the XBox controller is the offsett thumbsticks - it's more natural.  Plus the joysticks don't feel as loose.  I was fine on the PSOne and2 with the Sony controller, but after using the Xbox, it feels like a cheap piece of crap.

I don't think the best is yet to come for the PS3, as stated, MS has Project Natal coming, and MS is poised for one of it's biggest years yet this year with it's releases.

how are they remastered?

i think halo outsells killzone because the 360 was far cheaper than the ps3, now that the prices are similar i see the ps3 gaining ground

i like that sony didn't change the controller, that means i don't have to get used to a different one

project natal is like the wii?

this whole thing reminds me of the super nintendo sega genesis debates, everybdoy said sega was better when imo super nintendo was vastly superior, sega just had better marketing (remember "blast processing") and they also had sega channel

still can't decide :-\

I feel the same way about my X-BOX 360 controllers.  8) What the hell is with that headset? Another reason that i would not shell out $70 for their Blutooth.

My XBox came with a headset.  If you want a wireless one, you can get them for under $50.

The $70 price tag you keep quoting is ridiculous.  I'm trying to give Earl legitimate information.  I have no stake in this at all.  I don't know why you keep posting stuff that's not true.

how are they remastered?

i think halo outsells killzone because the 360 was far cheaper than the ps3, now that the prices are similar i see the ps3 gaining ground

i like that sony didn't change the controller, that means i don't have to get used to a different one

project natal is like the wii?

this whole thing reminds me of the super nintendo sega genesis debates, everybdoy said sega was better when imo super nintendo was vastly superior, sega just had better marketing (remember "blast processing") and they also had sega channel

still can't decide :-\

E

They're remastered graphically.  When the games were made, they assets were built beyond 480p, and then lowered for the PS2 to be able to handle it and keep the freme rates up.  So when the PS3 came around, they already had high res imagery available to them and they could easily remake it without much re-build.  That's why God of War 3 doesn't look all that better at the moment, but some of the clips are stating to look better.

I loved the Sony controller.  Then I used the 360 and it's not even close.  The triggers and offset thumb sticks make a world of difference.

Project Natal is not really like the Wii, since there no controller.  It's going to be more of an application device than a gaming one.  They're gunning for an iPhone type experience.

But, for gaming, it will enhance it.  Imagine coming to a door, using your controller as you normally do, but then just pushing the door open with your hand.......

If that is the criteria you're basing your purchase on, I think you're making a mistake.   Despite what's been said here, the new XBox with the Jasper drives don't RRoD.  Plus, even if it does, you get a three year warranty on the thing.  If there's other criteria at play, then as I said, it's really subjective, and you can't go wrong.

But, whichever you choose, make sure you don't fall prey to the HDMI cable overpricing at the stores.  Go to monoprice.com and get their cables with the ferrite cores.  They won't cost more than 5-6 bucks and are excellent.

i just don't want to deal with having to replace the system, i'm reading about people on their 4th and 5th 360

do you have to specifically ask for a jasper drive?

Sorry it took me so long to answer this.  I think it's the wattage.  Look for an output of 150.  But I would Google it to make sure.  (unless you're currently enjoying your PS3).

But, like I said earlier, all systems have issues.  Free network doesn't mean better:

All around the world, PlayStation 3 consoles simply aren't working like they're supposed to, with a PlayStation Network error preventing people from not just going online, but from playing some PS3 games offline as well.

From Europe to the Americas to, well, my house in Australia, users (mostly of older "Fat" consoles, those released before 2009's "PS3 Slim") are complaining that upon booting their consoles up, they're unable to sign into their accounts, check their trophies, use dynamic themes or access the PlayStation Network. That's fine, Sony say there are PSN connection problems, and that they are "looking into it".

Problem is, the error does more than just prevent you from going online. It prevents you from playing certain games offline as well. The screen above is what I was greeted with when attempting to play Heavy Rain, and pressing out of it simply reboots the PS3, returning you to the main menu screen. It's the same story for other games that feature dynamic trophy support.

You guys rooting for the 360 are insane... the only downside about the ps3 is there's no working mod chip for it..other then that it's f*cking perfect, I have every system made (nes, dreamcast, xbox, ps2, 360, ps3, wii) the ps3 smokes them all and the fact that it gives you free network connection and a blu ray player is just icing on the cake, I use my ps3 as a multi media device
copy divx movies I download to it, have mp3's on it, download full games and game demos and play it online every night with no connection problems or network/server problems. And the controller is 100 times better then that cheap crappy battery powered heavy ass 360 controller. The only thing I'm thankful for with my xbox is I paid $40 to have it hacked/chipped and now get games for $5 for it, and also that I haven't had the red ring of death (yet) I have to pay regular price for ps3 games and I STILL enjoy the system way more then the $5 games I get for 360

The PS3 struggles running any texture intensive engines like Unreal 3 because it has half the texture RAM.

Oh please, the 360 is a multimedia platform just like the PS3.  You can stream movies through netflix or do it from your computer.  You can also stream music.  It will play DVDs just fine, Blu-Ray is over rated and will be obsolete in the next few years.  It will be digital all the way for everything, including games.  The new Jasper drives don't RROD, so if you are buying one now that's bad on you because it is a known issue and you as a consumer should be doing your homework and looking at the box before you purchase it.

You guys bragging about your modded consoles...if you do then that is your choice and by all means go ahead and do it.  Thing is if you play online you can and will probably be caught and will have your xbox banned from xbox live.  If you do it again they can ban your ip address.  It can and does happen.

Crappy battery operated controller?  Heavier?  Sure, but it's more robust.  That, and the PS3 controller is battery operated too!

I prefer the 360, in my opinion it is a much better platform that will be here for a while as there are so many things that are being added to extend this console's life span.  The PS3 doesn't suck, but the 360 is well rounded.

Again, waste of money as it will be obsolete.  VHS to DVD is a bad example because technology moves at a much faster pace now.  We are already seeing that with both Netflix and Zune on the 360, and you are able to stream your movies from your PC.  My statement wasn't about the quality of Blu Ray, it was talking about the future of consoles being multi-media platforms as that is obviously the direction developers are heading.

Earl...a product should not have problems with it.  The thing is though is that the RROD is now a very well know problem.  While you may not like it, it is your responsiblity as a consumer to research the product to make sure you know what you are buying.  The 360 is a better, more well rounded system as it has all of the qualifications that a consumer is looking for.  To say that it isn't just because it doesn't have a Blu Ray player is crazy.

The 360's online is better, it has different multimedia aspents(Zune and Netflix), streaming, better game content with demos, arcade titles, etc.  It is my opinion that the 360 is #1 and will be for a while.

first of all who uses their console to download movies, don't you have a computer for that?  my laptop can download faster than any console and i don't have to pay a cent 8)   why is anybody using a console to download movies?

it should not be a consumer's responsibility to check a box to make sure they aren't buying a product that is basically gauranteed to break down, if the product is low quality microsoft shouldn't put it in stores or at least sell it for a cheaper price, microsoft doesn't care about it's customers :)

if ps3 had the same failure rate i don't think you would be using the "check the box" excuse

all 360 fanboys have the same answer to why 360 is "better" they mention online, is it because more people are online with the 360?  that will change as the ps3 sales increase

how are the demos better?  who buys a system for demos and streaming? don't you buy a system for games? ???  if you're going to pay $50 a year for online it should be better by miles, but it isn't

i just don't see how the 360 is better today, i think people don't want to admit it because they jumped the gun and bought a 360 a few years ago when the ps3 had no games and had a steep price, they didn't wait things out like me 8)

aside from mass effect i don't see quality exclusives like uncharted, god of war, heavy rain, yakuza, mlb the show, metal gear solid on 360

all i see is a bunch of exclusive fps games and ps3 has their own too, and all of 360's "exclusives" can be played on a computer

No way dude! not even close!!! ps3 online kills xbox live AND IT'S FREE!!!!! same things u get, free demos, skins, themes, portal to other sites (youtube, facebook, twittter, yahoo, google, etc.)

first of all who uses their console to download movies, don't you have a computer for that?  my laptop can download faster than any console and i don't have to pay a cent 8)   why is anybody using a console to download movies?

it should not be a consumer's responsibility to check a box to make sure they aren't buying a product that is basically gauranteed to break down, if the product is low quality microsoft shouldn't put it in stores or at least sell it for a cheaper price, microsoft doesn't care about it's customers :)

if ps3 had the same failure rate i don't think you would be using the "check the box" excuse

all 360 fanboys have the same answer to why 360 is "better" they mention online, is it because more people are online with the 360?  that will change as the ps3 sales increase

how are the demos better?  who buys a system for demos and streaming? don't you buy a system for games? ???  if you're going to pay $50 a year for online it should be better by miles, but it isn't

i just don't see how the 360 is better today, i think people don't want to admit it because they jumped the gun and bought a 360 a few years ago when the ps3 had no games and had a steep price, they didn't wait things out like me 8)

aside from mass effect i don't see quality exclusives like uncharted, god of war, heavy rain, yakuza, mlb the show, metal gear solid on 360

all i see is a bunch of exclusive fps games and ps3 has their own too, and all of 360's "exclusives" can be played on a computer

You don't download movies you stream them...big difference.

Captain...again, I said my opinion.  PS3 has it's problems too.

My demo comment was towards all of the gaming aspects of the game marketplace that the 360 has with the arcade titles, indy games, etc.  It's pretty cool that microsoft does that.  Along with game trailers, strategy videos, etc.  It's a whole list of things for games that the 360 does which I enjoy more.
