Baby-slapping incident on plane prompts corporal-punishment debate
By LEANNE ITALIE and SUE MAJOR HOLMES
The Associated Press
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — America's latest folk-hero flight attendant may be the one on a Southwest Airlines jet who took a 13-month-old baby from her mother after the woman slapped the crying child for kicking her. The attendant's actions, however, set off an intense debate: When and how should bystanders intervene?
Parents on both sides of the corporal-punishment debate agreed that hitting a baby that young was wrong. But they also empathized with the mother, saying they've been exactly where she found herself Monday on the Dallas-to-Seattle flight: stressed, and trapped on an airplane.
The federal laws that give crew members broad power to ensure safety can be invoked in situations like the one that unfolded on the flight, said Jerry Sterns, a San Francisco attorney specializing in aviation cases.
Acts of aggression against children in public places are often witnessed but frequently ignored, said Christin Jamieson, a spokeswoman for Washington state's blue-ribbon, anti-abuse commission called the Council of Children and Families.
"Simply put, most people don't know what to do," she said. "This is one of the most helpless feelings — both for the child and the witness — that you can imagine."
Flight attendant Beverly McCurley told officers that she saw the mother hit the child on the face with her open hand while the father yelled at the mother to stop screaming at the girl. She noted the girl had a black eye. The parents said the bruise was from a dog bite.
McCurley described the mother as agitated. She said the woman also slapped the baby on the legs and told the child to shut up. The mother later told police she "popped" the tired tot when the child kicked her, because "when she's screaming and she can't hear me say no, that's the only way I can get her to stop."
The flight attendant said she took the baby and walked to the rear of the plane. She said the father came back, took the child and stood there with her until she fell asleep.
At the request of the airline, authorities met the parents when the flight landed in Albuquerque, a scheduled stop. Paramedics checked out the child, and the family boarded another flight to continue their trip.

Tough call. At the end of the day its no one's business to tell others how to discipline their kids. Mind you, if the person was slugging the crap outta their kids it would merit as child abuse.
-
Leave them to it.
My parents gave me a slapped ass when I was a kid. I see no problem with it.
My son is 8 - he has had his ass slapped 1 time. He is an extremely well behaved and well balanced kid. He knows where the line is, he knows what happens if he crosses the line & life is fine.
The liberals just decided one day that you should talk things through with kids instead of a tap on the ass/back of the hand. Kids have been getting slapped for generations. Now you aren't supposed to do it & look at the cheeky, disrespectful little fuckers running around all over the place.
Next time you see a vegetarian - take a long hard look at their kids and tell me if you really want yours turning out like that.
-
it depends.....sometime the kid needs their ass beat.......but if the parent is being crazy, or has been drinking, or under the influence of anything.....then its ok to stomp that parents ass...

Growing up when I misbehaved, I was hit with everything that wasn't nailed down to the ground. that's why I turned out normal. Now? These parents are way to easy with their kids / brats.
-
if it was just a swat or slap on the leg I wouldnt say anything but from what I hear that child already had a black eye...
In that case I would more than likely alert authorties

You wouldn't have to, now these spoiled brats have eye phones at age 10.

I would stay out of it. Don't agree with them intervening. The kid sounds like she needed to be whacked. I think the parent should have taken her to the bathroom and whupped her butt. But I'm not that kid's parent. Not my call. Or the airline's.
I wouldn't slap a kid that young (or slap a kid of any age for that matter), but if my kid ever hit or kicked me they would get knocked the !@#$ out. They all know this. :)

slapping is one thing but again...
This child apparently already had a black eye
if I see a little kid with a black eye getting slapped...ya Im probably going to say something

thing is...usually if u see ill mannered kids in pakistan, they belong to the lower classes and poor people. i moved to america expecting the same but NO....well educated upper class families have kids that behave like they came from down trodden uneducated parents. apparently people now a days dont believe that a kids manners are a reflection upon themselves.
-
The kid probably deserved it. My grandmother in Indonesia used to tie her kids to a tree and beat them with the iron end of a belt. The deserved it (my father or aunts).
Parents in the western world usually do not know how to discipline their children.
Next. ::)

Guys, there's a big difference between kids... and a 13 month old baby.
A swat on the ass of a 7 yr old is a far cy from slapping a 13 month old baby across the face for crying on an airplane. For cripes sakes, when my ears pop, I feel like crying, Can you imagine what a nightmare it is for a baby... and to slap a baby in the face? That can shake their brain and cause death. There's no excuse for it.

Agree.
I believe I would intervene if I saw what the article states...at least to say something.
Do you guys remember the video of the woman that was beating the hell out of her daughter in the back of her car? I believe I would physically intervene in that case.

i'd slap the shit out of the mom....
when you have a child THAT young...
DONT FLY....PERIOD
goes along the same lines as...dont pull out breast out in public and start breastfeeding...ENUFF already...you r a new mom..fucking STAY HOME..or DONT HAVE KIDS if you r not willing to make a sacrifice...if the sacrifice is too much for you....
o yeah..throws that whole...i can have a kid without a man argument out of the window dosen't it :-\

More kids should be slapped, and that flight attendant should have been slapped as well...
this is how the dumb flight attendant would have disciplined the child, "Now, it wrong to kick, you know that." Kid kicks her again, "I told you it was wrong, now stop..." And it goes on. You must show children that there is a consequence for bad actions, and especially if you tell them to stop doing something. And many many times, kids want to try you in public, thinking that they can get away with stuff.

Parker, we're talking about a 13 month old baby, on an airplane... most likely with her eardrums popping,
...not a petulant 7 year old trying to challenge authority... a baby. Sheesh! Babies kick, that's what they do. It's starts in the womb before they even come into the world. It's how they stretch their muscles. Babies kick, they pull hair, they spit up, they pee, they poop, they scream, they sleep like contented little angels. That's what babies do. ::)
-
I remember flying when I was pretty young probably around 4 or so and my ears started to pop and it was excruciating...lol I didnt cry but it was pretty painful I couldnt imagine for a little infant...and again from what ive heard this child already had a black eye...
I agree with disciplining your child but I think trying to comfort the child in this instance would have done more than slapping it.

A one yr old child can still be disciplined. A lil slap on the hand, leg or bottom, with a stern "No!" is all that is needed. Children at that age are smart, and still trying to test boundaries. Yes Children at that age kick, scream, but if you let it continue, they will continue to do it at the most inopportune moments. Every been to church, where the child starts crying, not out of pain, but out of attention, an when ignored, they get louder? Same deal.
i remember I was at a Housewarming, and a lady had her one yr old there. I was constanstly keeping the child from bumping his big head on stuff. A older lady told me, "Let him bump his head, then he'll know not to do it again..."
Fast fwd two yrs later, the lady brought that child to work, and it showed that he was never disciplined, he was constantly grabbing everything in site, and his mother only said plantive "Stop, don't do that..."
Every where you looked he was picking up things he shouldn't have...his mother was a 40-something, who didn't need kids in her life.

So because you know a lady with a precocious brat, ...that justifies the abuse of someone else's baby?

EVERYONE knows such a lady...you make it sound like its a rare occurrence....its not...
and discipline is not abuse...
but i guess since you consider that abuse...you'd probably have illmannered, do as you please kids :-\

Good post. Discipline is so important for little ones. They know very early on (before age 1) what "no" means and they learn right from wrong very quickly. They are constantly testing boundaries and will work a weak-minded/weak-willed/apathetic parent. Kids actually love parents more when parents establish rules and enforce them.

my girs nephews grew up and are growing up with absolutely no boundaries...and r pretty illmannered...NOW the parents r suddenly getting stricter...but TOO LATE...i guess they r doing so cause they probably heard stuff about their kids from other people and got embrassed...anyhow as i said ...TOO LATE...
recently i heard one of them say " when my dad dies i'm gonna take over his business and have a lot of $ " and he's 10 yrs old :-\...sad

Yep. Once they become teenagers, it's too late. In fact, if you haven't developed good character, obedience, etc. by about age five or so, it's probably too late. A kid's personality doesn't change. The core of who they are is pretty well established very early. That's why good parental involvement, training, role modeling, etc. are so important.

When my brother was a very young lad and was acting up in the car, my mother said, "Do you wnat me to pull over on the side of the road and slap your lil legs?!!", His reply? It as "Do it!", he didn't think my mother would pull over in busy traffic and spank him, and she did. And then she told him, "And I don't want to hear a sound, or I will really give you something to cry about!"...and he sat, sobbing silently...

lol. :) That's classic. I remember the first time we test drove a minivan as our family was expanding, the first thing my oldest laughingly said was "you can't reach me." :)

I'm not against spanking but I think slapping a baby in the face is wrong.
I've been known to squeeze some unruly teenagers until they left the room yelling child abuse, but I don't think that was abuse.

I was opposed to spanking before I had kids. I changed my opinion not long after my first brat came along. I used a method recommended by child psychologist John Rosemond: only on the butt, only with your hand, no more than three swats. Excellent way to deliver the supreme sanction without abusing the kid.
What I found is that having the spanking option makes the other lesser forms of punishment much easier to implement. I didn't have to use it that much, and then the kids get old enough where other things like loss of privileges and gadgets become just as effective.

My parents had Apple trees, Peach Trees and Dogwood trees. Each switch from that tree had a different feeling...the Peach tree and the apple tree has a wet, swift feeling to it, the dogwood tree had a had crak to them
now getting lit up for a few minutes, is how much a spanking should be, any longer than 2-3 minutes (max), will be way too long.

some male teenagers need to get in a fist fight with their dad. Dad needs to still show that he is the dominant alpha male of the house when the punk starts getting mouthy. But...then talk to him after the blood bath to let him know to tone it down a few notches. Maybe drink a beer with him.

Noooo. The switch is much worse. Many lickins. Much longer. The kid getting knocked out only involves two hits: kid getting hit, kid hitting the floor. :)

As a 16 yrs old, Forgot what I did, but my dad came at me, knocked over a lamp and lit me on the side of my jaw ...he's 6'0 and my jaw, was rocked..kinda out of place...As I said, I forgot what I did, I thinki just got mouthy!
The switch, was effective when I was younger. My dad used a belt, a belt that had been split at the end, a big black, worn hard belt. Sometimes my mother used it.
For some odd reason I have the utmost respect for my parents, and even now, will not raise my voice at them..
