Title: How difficult is it to learn to play an instrument?
Post by: Wiggs on June 01, 2011, 12:23:26 AM
I'd like to learn to play an instrument (insert skin flute and other jokes).
Perhaps the piano or a version of a guitar.  Is this difficult to learn as an adult?  Keep in mind I'm more intelligent than most of you ;D

Honestly though, have any of you learned an instrument as an adult...I had no interest as a child I have as an adult just never to the time. I can sing but that's not enough, I'd like to play an instrument.

It's all about muscle memory.... serious. You repeat.and repeat the chords ect till your fingers auto matically move there like instant. The hardest part is the first few months. Piano is easier straight off because you don't have the finger conditioning that you must have on guitar. You first month on guitar will leave your fingers throbbing. But guitar is way cooler and chicks dig it

It's like BB. If you start at 45, you can still make nice gains, but you'll never be Mr O, gear or not.
Guitar is nice, I play guitar since I was 12.

Most people start with Spanish guitar with nylon strings. But there's no reason you should start with an electric one. You have to buy an amplifier as well though.

But I'm a Doors, Zeplin and Janis Joplin kind of guy...I like depressing morbid music as some would call it.

I would go for Fender Stratocaster replica "squier". They are cheap but still decent quality.

The biggest challenge is starting out. It takes a lot of patience. Try to listen some simple tunes and play along.

Thanks man...I think the most important thing to take from everyone is patience...So I'll have to slow my roll on trying to be all cool and mysterious ;D and learn the instrument...

I used to play cello, and I still have it. I want to start up again and then play R&B songs on it. To me, it's way cooler and mysterious tha the guitar, plus women think it's "Romantic" and consider you "cultured"...it's the equivalent of the sax...

But, you have to have a "ear" for whatever you are playing...some people are tone deaf, and don't have that ear, which leads to bad notes and chords...

these days it's a million times easier to learn how to play an instrument, with the internet and youtube and all.

i started playing 11 years ago, and still suck, but i would've saved at least 5 years of learning time if i had youtube when i started.

shit, these days you go to youtube and just type in "how to play *song title*) and you get a hundred results with video and note by note playing.

same with lessons.

just type in "rock lesson" or "blues lesson" and you get hundreds of nifty little tricks you can use.

i doubt you'll get good enough to have a national tour, but you'll get good enough to enjoy playing for yourself.  that's what i do, it's a great stress reliever.

keyboard is the easiest to play, because it's mostly visual and you'll learn Chords and Progressions faster in keyboards......they have a great variety of Methods for adults. the John thompson methods are my favorites

the basics are not hard at all. just learn a few open chords, then look up the tabs on the net.
but it gets very deep as you advance.

playing by ear is the most simple way to start giving that you know basic chords.....there are lots of Great musicians outthere who doesn't know how to read music, but they can assimulate almost any styles and rhythm on the spot.

Fender is the only guitar to get to start, every sound you can imagine with fantastic set up anywhere in the price range.  I have 3 strats and a les Paul. First song I ever learnt was one vision by.queen.  something really satisfying about learning a song.

Doesn't matter how intelligent.. I'm sure it plays a small roll, but I've seen genius' that can't even march to a beat in the military.

It's your ear, and it's your committment.

Me, on the other hand have the best of both worlds. I have perfect pitch and I'm .... "knowlegeable"  ;D

I'm sure at some point I've posted my guitar vids here on teh forum. Go for it, it won't take long from a trained ear and eye to tell if you have a remote chance at succeeding.

I've seen intelligent folks bust their asses at music and just NEVER get it. They can only get to a certain level. Check for perfect pitch and see how close you come even now...

If you got ear for notes and sense of rhythm, you may learn to play, if you don't, it will be long road. You can train your ear and the sense of the rhythm, and when you have learn this base for music, then you have some base to build your playing. I pick up the guitar some years ago, and first thing what I learn, was the fact that I didn't have any sense of rhythm what so ever. I have quite good ear but it isn't enough, because rhythm is everything in the music. What ever you play, you have to get your timing at the note, or it sounds like crap.

It's been awhile but I can probably still play the clarinet, still badly.  In b4 one time at band camp.  How keyboardists or strings players can sight read chords blows my mind.

I sight read, but not up to tempo. I was more proficient at it when I was teaching guitar years ago. Should probably add a little sight reading to my daily practice regimen to get it back up to speed.

yes I'm qualified.

I own multiple guitars that never leave my bedroom where I have my marshall half stack that goes to 11 where I play songs that other people wrote and post videos of on youtube.

I enjoy talking about different strings and I pretend like I can actually hear a difference between each set.  I obsess over tone because I like to sound just like the recording.  I actually think that buying some effects pedal will help me musically.  I memorize complex chord names so I can sound educated and I think memorizing theory translates into musical ability.

Anyone who can shred faster than me has no "emotion".  and I'm better than anyone slower.

fender and gibson are the only instruments that should be played and I have bumper stickers from each company on my car so the person behind me knows I'm better than they are.

occasionally I'll get a gig at the local park or go to a friends "house" and play the 12 bar blues for 5 hours then "toke down" and go home.

I know you know some people like that ^  they're annoying as fuck.  this is why I don't support people taking up guitar.

Intelligence won't help you if you don't have talent. However, folks who are good in math and folks who learn foreign languages easily are reputed to be more musically inclined. I learned to play piano as a kid although I never did anything with it. When I sit down at the piano in the living room, I can still play about as good as I did way back then (which isn't saying much). I've considered taking lessons again. Your never too old to learn something new.

Piano,...find a teacher that teaches from the Well Tempered Clavier...

If you go with guitar, find a teacher who teaches from the Vivaldi books.
