How difficult is it to learn to play an instrument?
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:23:26 AM »
I'd like to learn to play an instrument (insert skin flute and other jokes).
Perhaps the piano or a version of a guitar.  Is this difficult to learn as an adult?  Keep in mind I'm more intelligent than most of you ;D

Honestly though, have any of you learned an instrument as an adult...I had no interest as a child I have as an adult just never to the time. I can sing but that's not enough, I'd like to play an instrument.

It's all about muscle memory.... serious. You repeat.and repeat the chords ect till your fingers auto matically move there like instant. The hardest part is the first few months. Piano is easier straight off because you don't have the finger conditioning that you must have on guitar. You first month on guitar will leave your fingers throbbing. But guitar is way cooler and chicks dig it

It's like BB. If you start at 45, you can still make nice gains, but you'll never be Mr O, gear or not.
Guitar is nice, I play guitar since I was 12.

Most people start with Spanish guitar with nylon strings. But there's no reason you should start with an electric one. You have to buy an amplifier as well though.

FUCK YES

But I'm a Doors, Zeplin and Janis Joplin kind of guy...I like depressing morbid music as some would call it.

I would go for Fender Stratocaster replica "squier". They are cheap but still decent quality.

The biggest challenge is starting out. It takes a lot of patience. Try to listen some simple tunes and play along.

Thanks man...I think the most important thing to take from everyone is patience...So I'll have to slow my roll on trying to be all cool and mysterious ;D and learn the instrument...

I used to play cello, and I still have it. I want to start up again and then play R&B songs on it. To me, it's way cooler and mysterious tha the guitar, plus women think it's "Romantic" and consider you "cultured"...it's the equivalent of the sax...

But, you have to have a "ear" for whatever you are playing...some people are tone deaf, and don't have that ear, which leads to bad notes and chords...

these days it's a million times easier to learn how to play an instrument, with the internet and youtube and all.

i started playing 11 years ago, and still suck, but i would've saved at least 5 years of learning time if i had youtube when i started.

shit, these days you go to youtube and just type in "how to play *song title*) and you get a hundred results with video and note by note playing.

same with lessons.

just type in "rock lesson" or "blues lesson" and you get hundreds of nifty little tricks you can use.

i doubt you'll get good enough to have a national tour, but you'll get good enough to enjoy playing for yourself.  that's what i do, it's a great stress reliever.

keyboard is the easiest to play, because it's mostly visual and you'll learn Chords and Progressions faster in keyboards......they have a great variety of Methods for adults. the John thompson methods are my favorites

the basics are not hard at all. just learn a few open chords, then look up the tabs on the net.
but it gets very deep as you advance.
