Gun owners who have historically been able to use public lands for target practice would be barred from potentially millions of acres under new rules drafted by the Interior Department, the first major move by the Obama administration to impose limits on firearms.
More at the link. Basically will mean that all public lands are off limits to shooting.
It would also reduce land available for hunting.
If the draft policy is finally approved, some public access to Bureau lands to hunters would also be limited, potentially reducing areas deer, elk, and bear hunters can use in the West.

But i am damn sick of people going 1/2 mile from my florida home to the woods or wetlands, and shooting off AKs at all hours of a drunkeen friday night, with no regard for backstop or where those bullets might land.
So I'm okay with this. If you want to shoot a gun, do it on your own property, at a range, whatever. But just pulling your trunk up to 'public lands' and drinking a case of beer while firing rounds into the night... no way.

I got your point and I don't have the figures, but countries that allow possesion of guns got higher murder rates and agression. Holland is next to Belgium, where it's almost as easy to get a gun license as in the US and they got a lot more murders over there..... :-\

Here is a 2nd point to consider, I also thought that the founding fathers of this country created the 2nd amendment so that you could defend yourself against your own government should you need to. (think Militia, minute men, etc) Of course back then when everyone had access to mostly the same weapons it made sense.
But these days I'm not sure it would even be a fair comparison. (what you can buy vs. government) So if the government has access to such good damn weapons, etc... then why do they care what I buy at a sporting goods store? Permits? All the red tape and paperwork... it sucks!
Of course back then when 2nd amendment was created, the government worked for the people. Now it is reversed and we all work for the government while the vote to give themselves giant raises, good heath care, etc. Plus the government now is so huge and controls everything. I say FU to them all ... republicans, democrats, you name it... none of them have the citizens best interest at hand.

Back in 2002 I bought a plot of land in a rural part of Ohio and built my house.
About 100 yards from my house was public land where you could hunt birds and rabbits.
In '03 I got a call from my wife saying my son was being rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
A stray .22 bullet from a guy rabbit hunting had hit my boy and went through his liver. The response time from the EMT was nearly 40 minutes and he had lost too much blood by the time he reached the hospital. He died in front of my wife in the back of the ambulance.
I blame myself for building my house so close to public hunting grounds. However, we were the 5th house to go up on that rural road within a couple years. That area was becoming too populated to have a public hunting ground nearby.

Good point, didn't think of that angle. So in that way... the government probably does fear us... even if the best we can get is semi-auto rifle and shotguns. I just always assumed military grade stuff was so far ahead ... it would be like us using rocks and bb guns to fight back. LOL

Their are civilian versions of many Military weapons. The M-16 assault rifle is available to the public as the AR15.. and its a very common weapon.
Dont undersell how the 2nd amendment protects us from our own government... it really does.

Very true. I'm not a gun freak at all I own two. I keep them around to protect myself and the ones I love. I like knowing they're there If I need them.

Same here. I'm not sure what to make of gun nuts, other than that they just like to collect guns, which is cool. If the shit hits the fan, I'm not sure what having 30 guns would do for you, as you can't carry around 30 guns at once. The few guns I do have, however, have lots of ammo and am comfortable shooting them. I need to post up pics of my tried and true 870 with ammo mount, scope, and light mount.....and my 8.5" .44 Raging Bull ;D

I have a mossberg 500 and a glock 19 I have a nice stock of ammo for both. I would like to add an ak or ar15 but they're a little out of my price range right now. After that I will be happy with what I have. I wish the days of 150 dollars sks and 300-500 dollars aks was still around. Ten years ago you could buy an sks for 100 bucks and 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 for 50 bucks. That would cost 500-700 bucks now.

Nah Makavali25 has valid point. ;) I just figured initially what the hell kind of threat am I with a high powered rifle or shotgun when compared to the government. So I was thinking why do they want to control my guns so much. I also assumed anything else fancy is out of reach $ wise. (like them class 3 whatever, and automatic, etc guns)
But Makavali25 is totally right. If there are more civilians with simple shotguns and rifles they can probably overrun a smaller population of military. Especially if those civilians have a real strong motive to fight.

Thanks man, and yeah I agree the government should not be the only ones allowed to be armed. When the government tries to control guns in the name of safety I say BS. A criminal will get it illegally anyways. Not some dude wanting to hunt deer, target practice, or just collect weapons for fun.

I agree in principles, but perhaps not entirely in practice. Don't misunderstand: I don't want a government apparatchik deciding who's fit to own weapons. But at the same time, I don't have a problem with sensible regulations that aren't overly restrictive and don't pose burdens to people wishing to buy weapons.
For example, I have no problem with bans on gun ownership for convicted felons, or with having processes in place to prevent people (with proper judicial oversight) who have a history of mental illness from purchasing weapons. I don't support the "assault weapons ban" in general. But at the same time I don't think that one should be able to walk into the local gun store and walk out with an M2 Browning (.50 caliber, up to 1200 rounds/min) no questions asked.
The problem will never be solved because politicians present it as a black and white issue and pander to the fringes. And when it comes down it, it's not a black and white issue. There's gradations. But inflammatory rhetoric pays off at the ballot box.
One side needs to accept that the Second Amendment is part of the Constitution and that Americans can keep and bear arms. The other side needs to accept that not every attempt is an attempt to take its guns away.

I got your point and I don't have the figures, but countries that allow possesion of guns got higher murder rates and agression. Holland is next to Belgium, where it's almost as easy to get a gun license as in the US and they got a lot more murders over there..... :-\

In '03 I got a call from my wife saying my son was being rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
A stray .22 bullet from a guy rabbit hunting had hit my boy and went through his liver. The response time from the EMT was nearly 40 minutes and he had lost too much blood by the time he reached the hospital. He died in front of my wife in the back of the ambulance.
I blame myself for building my house so close to public hunting grounds. However, we were the 5th house to go up on that rural road within a couple years. That area was becoming too populated to have a public hunting ground nearby.

i love guns, i carry with a permit, and i love the 2nd amendment.
But i am damn sick of people going 1/2 mile from my florida home to the woods or wetlands, and shooting off AKs at all hours of a drunkeen friday night, with no regard for backstop or where those bullets might land.
So I'm okay with this. If you want to shoot a gun, do it on your own property, at a range, whatever. But just pulling your trunk up to 'public lands' and drinking a case of beer while firing rounds into the night... no way.
Well I think it should be a felonly to operate a firearm with alcohol in your system, similar to a DUI. Also plinking at night? WTF ?

I think the solution isn't to ban guns ...just limit shooting to some safe number of miles outside of an urban setting.

Now I can see where people are getting concerned though, because it can turn into a very slippery slope as far as gun control goes.
It looks like Obama is trying to push the wedge issues in hopes of getting re-elected since he isn't having any luck fixing the economy.
If you can't wait for him to be out of office, this is a very good sign.

I think the people who are all up in arms (heh, get it?) about this are mostly overreacting. The "Obama's taking muh guns" cries are definitely overreacting. The proposed regulations should absolutely be thoroughly and closely reviewed, but from what I read so far they don't really seem all that unreasonable in general, although government agencies have a tendency to make reasonable things unreasonable with extraordinary efficiency.

I have a 12 gauge shot gun, makes me feel safer having a cannon in my home to protect me. More importantly I feel guns are good to protect us from our own government rather than a foreign invader. Say the US government started trying to round us up for mass imprisonment/executions, I feel we would be able to put up a good resistance. Guns keep the government in check.
