Legendary scene from the 1986 movie "crossroads"
Guitar hero Steve Vai and the Karate kid Ralph Macchio go head to head trading guitar solos. Eventually Macchio pulls out this incredible classically inspired piece.

nothing worse than being the bass player, standing between two jerkoffs having a volume duel on lead guitar.

Tell them switch from "distorted" to clean, you'll see who has the superior technique

It's like I wish I had a nice decibel meter, so we could see each guy slowly bumping up their levels with their pinkie when it's their turn.
Imagine "Fight for your Right" by beastie boys with 2 lead guitarists shredding over A at the same time. *shudder*
-
Ralph's solo on the tele is pretty clean really I reckon, all natural valve gain. Ry Cooder, who's doing the actual playing, was no fret wanking shredder really, proper dopper guitar playing.
I always wonder how Vai felt having to pretend not to be able to do that bend at the end.

hi bass player
-
Ry Cooder really ? I always thought Vai did both...
Vai played the classical piece at the end, inspired by Paganini's various Caprices, mostly number 5 but there's other parts of the remaining Caprices too, while Ry Cooder did the more bluesier slide work and the basic stuff compared to Vai who took over at the end.
Arlen Roth (founder of Hot Licks Videos, if you remember those) was supposed to be the guy that Vai got but when they found Vai, the rest as they say, is history.
-
Ha ha! Vai was ecstatic at the thought of making a movie. He bent the note alright, he just didn't bend it the way he would have in the studio or on stage. He tried to fake mistakes throughout the solo, but there is actually a guy on Youtube that calls his videos by the name of "shred" and he is really good at playing like he can't... look for : Steve Vai shreds, EVH shreds, Slash shreds.. you'll see what I mean.
Steve got to play the epitome of a rock star on the biggest stage in the world... a classic movie.
Steve wrote, composed, taught and performed most of the music, much like he did for Frank Zappa back in the day.
-
I play Eugene's Trick Bag daily during my practice regimen. That, and Flight of the Bumblebee.

I did not know this. It does go noticeable more fiddly diddly on the final solo, so I guess that would make sense.
I have the Michael Angelo hotlicks vid! haha, supposedly the biggest selling one.

I'm not sure how much he wrote, co-wrote or what have you, but he was in Zappa's band for quite awhile.
Check out Vai's website, I thought it was interesting. One thing I particularly remember about it was how Vai described two of his bands; (iirc) Vai and Whitesnake (which he was in for a short time but not on the famous recordings). Vai he said the band of his own name "was what it was." In the next picture of him with Whitesnake the caption read "it wasn't what it was." ;D

I saw VAI at a small club when Devin Townsend was the singer. That was a great concert and album.

Now THAT would have been something to see.

Steve Vai did more for Zappa than he will ever admit.. and vice versa. Steve Vai is a musical genius and he doesn't brag about it ~ except through his playing.
And for the record, not only did he transpose and write for Frank Zappa, he also came up with many of his own tunes at that time. The problem was: Vai was a childhood prodigy and was not allowed into clubs at his young age.

I can play this its not technical just fast.

He also taught Dweezil Zappa, how to play all the fast legato techniques. Here is Dweezil demonstrating how to play eruption note for note.

Dweezil is awesome. I started listening to him with "My Guitar want to kill your mamma" way back in the day. Everyone else was into Iron Maiden but me and my buddy would find the obscure.

Dweezil, is Dweezil, & Eddie is Eddie.

er....... maybe technically. Not the best at tear jerking feeling or anything, but that's personal I guess and it's not a contest.
All the super-strat guys, Gilbert, Ia Ekland from Freak Kitchen etc all have that monotone humbucker Ibanez Caparison, Jackson sound with no dynamics. Give them a proper strat or tele and I'm sure they're still good, but Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray, even John Mayer, can do expressive shit that I personally get more from than all the scale speed guys. I love Michael Angelo et all and enjoy playing arpeggios and sweeps and speed picking, but at the end of the day the mature listener, and girls, wanna hear notes with feeling that evoke a mood other than slaying dragons at a million miles an hour.
Then there's Paco De Lucia, Al Dimeola etc. And Spanky Alford, Bud Powell, Jo Pass, .........Django, so many good guys from all eras. Vai couldn't play what Spanky Alford plays cos he wouldn't know the notes probably.
I'm seeing Tommy Emmanuelle next week, those who know will know the awesomeness!

What vid were you watching?! Awesome on tele too. If you're not into Danny Gatton / Albert Lee type stuff I guess it's not your thing, but still has more integrity than hiding behind a bunch of gain where you hardly have to touch the strings.

Zakk Wylde, can shred & yet still makes some of the notes sing for their supper. He also has the widest singing, vibrato, in the rock guitar world :o
Damn that guy is good!! Makes me want to practice every time I hear him play.............

Zakk, is using a tone of gain there, but he is also hitting a shit load of notes.

Or you can go down the, "my name is Michael Angelo Batio, & I have got more shred than can be contained on one guitar neck" - "So I got x2. Yeah I have a hair cut that looks like I just came of the set of the Munsters, & I look a total fucking dick, with this dumb, double neck guitar, but hey, fuck it"
What was he thinking?? Watch for the cheesy little look he gives the camera every now & then, that says "check me out" - What a fucking idiot.

I have to agree, Dweezil pretty much plays that as close as it can get unless you're watching Eddie himself in the recording studio at the moment it was recorded.

Okay he's not playing a super strat, and he has tons of ability, but shitloads of gains and shitloads of notes does not necessarily the best guitarist ever make. Plus he has that scooped annoying sound. Badass for rock/metal though.
-
John Petrucci has like zero feel, just that "look at me I'm doing a soft bit and making no mistakes" type of feel, which is fair enough but leaves me cold.
Give him or Zak Wylde some single coils and ask him to evoke some proper emotion, he can't do it. Dream Theatre are arguably the least musical band on earth, crazy complex solos and time changes played flawlessly into pro-tools where they can be made even more flawless, is not musical.
I'm not a big acoustic freak or anything, but this shit takes so much more care and makes your chest go all weird in an awesome way. Petrucci could probably play this flawlessly, but it wouldn't hit the spot in the same way. Subtlety and nuance are not his friend.
-
This guy is supporting Tommy Emmanuelle next week, he did work experience in the same music shop as me, about 18 here, check some of the runs towards the end, absolutely disgusting. He was spotted by Emmanuelle and is now his protegey.
I think he's on the same Candyrat records as Andy McKee also now.

Haha I actually like Michael Angelo, he's almost like a mental patient withhis obsession with the technical and disinterest in the modern world and other styles. You're right what is that fucking hair and facial expression? hahaha
-
There is no "best" guitar player.
If there were, there wouldn't be so many. Think a bit if possible.
There are guitarists that are aliens, just like bodybuilders. They will always have an upper edge on the "competition" ~ but the "best" is going to be in the eyes and ears of the beholder.
There is no "Best" anything in this world. Geez. How retarded.

My favorites (those who influenced my (soloing) playing the most)-
SRV
EVH
Vai
Satch
Rhodes
Wylde

Truth, Zakk has some of the best combo of emotion/bluesy and shredding/speed of any guitar player Ive heard.
He bridges the gap.
Honestly, Ive heard Vai try and play bluesy stuff, its just impossible, even his bluesy/emotional music feel and sound mechanical. Seems like all those shredders, they get into that mechanical fast as you can play mode, and they just cant ever loosen up. Every one ive heard, even when they try and slow down, and put emotion in, still sounds mechanical.
Worst was Yngwie, he had a song I listened to that was supposed to be a straight up blues piece, and it sounded like he inputed the notes into a computer and the computer was playing the music back to him. Lol.
-
Shred doesn't impress me anymore WHAT is difficult is putting the emotions into a song.

It does not impress anyone anymore, how many albums are Satch / Vai selling these days?? Zakk, will only sell albums off the back of Ozzy.
I never listen to shredding anymore, it was great when I was 20, but not anymore.
Angus Young, once said "it's not the notes that you play that count, it's the SPACE that you leave between them" - listen to ACDC "Back in Black" & you will get it ;)
TBH, I don't think anyone actually ever purchased an album for the techy, guitar playing, other than other guitarists. ho-hum.

The first video is one of my favorite acoustic songs.
The second is an amazing display of technique. A must see
Classical guitar is a whole other ball game. IMO The greatest classical concert guitarists (Andre's Segovia, John Williams) are far above the likes of Vai etc in terms of technique and precision

Love Petrucci and Dream Theater.
I go on Vai's website and YouTube channel from time to time and the vids he puts out are pretty fucking cool and really do give some insight into his playing and such.
His quote, and I'm paraphrasing, was "You know, you can play fast, shred and go crazy nut if the notes don't mean anything then it's really meaningless."
That was pretty cool as he was talking about creating a song modeled after Romanian wedding music or something.
Cool as shit.

Personal preference...to say one of these guys "couldn't' play another's lick is assinine...they are all monstrously talented and can basically do whatever the fuck they want on a guitar.
you like the bluesy sound and "feel"...I don't...I want to hear some shit i've never heard before..not the same old..."my baby done left me/ now what will i do/ got no money in my pockets/and a hole in my shoe..i got's the BLUES baby"
I think people who worship the blues and think they are "purists' are myopic fools...you can find just as much "feel' in an insanely distorted solo on a state of the art ibanez... as you can in one played on a single pickup POS thru a shitty amp. it's whats in the dude's mind that is playing that counts
and you can find a hack "bluesman" just as easily as you can find a hack "shredder".....shitty is shitty
