He set a red line. It was crossed, but did nothing. Set another red line. It was crossed again, but we don't know if it was Assad or the rebels. Yet, he feels compelled to do something and eventhough he claims that he can order action against Syria, he puts it on Congress to decide. I fail to see how any of this caused Syria to even contemplate turning over their chemical weapons. Everything the USA claimed was going to do only resulting in Syria and Iran threatening to be even more belligerent.
But, THEN Russia stepped in and it seems the situation is changing. The same Russia who from the very beginning called for diplomacy. I can't believe Russia was the voice of reason in this whole situation.
Obama is playing checkers, while Putin is playing chess. In times like this you can really see how useless a community organizer is in the arena of world affairs.

Independent evidence is showing chemical weapons were used by Rebels, not gov't forces,
Congress has said NO, and despite all this, it appears Obama's orders remain the same.
This would put him in the very precarious position of being the first US President to disregard the only body in the USA with the legal right to declare war, and they have not done so. To go forward would put him clearly in the category of a war criminal launching an illegal war of aggression.
Putin's offer was a life-line for Obama. He may try to re-group and get the additional support he needs, but he does have a reprieve, momentarily at least.

The stated goal wasn't regime change - it was to remove the WMD.
That's happening now. We're avoiding a major refugee crisis that affects gas prices.

Do you think Putin has a interest in preventing a US Strike on Syria (i.e. would it be bad for him/his country)
Do you think the threat of a strike is an effective way to get recalcitrant adversary to capitulate or do you believe Putin's claim that such a threat is counterproductive (and his reason for making this claim is tied to the first question)
