Title: Kindle dilemma
Post by: Cleanest Natural on November 14, 2013, 07:57:54 AM
I read quite a bit as it is part of my daily routine, so to speak. I was looking at different kind of kindles for this purpose. Although I am a purist, the last few years I red almost exclusively pdf versions and usually off my laptop. I did notice that not all books have a kindle version, but the 4000 pages of someone's lifework I always read do come in a kindle version.

What do you think are my best options? I am not very good at assessing pros and cons and am quasi illiterate when it comes to tech.

So do I. But I cannot carry with me all the time the usual 6000 pages I always read from. I also have a habit of reading pdf off of my back at night, during the night sometimes, in the morning upon waking up. So I figured a kindle would be a useful tool.

The Kindle Paperwhite seems nice. I have a Kindle Fire and my wife has a regular Kindle. The Fire is just a wannabe iPad, wouldn't do it again. The biggest problem that I have is that my wife and I can't seem to "share" our purchases. So we just trade the Kindles back and forth.

I looked at the Fire, the regular and the paperwhite. Paperwhite seems to be what I need I guess.

paperwhite should read .pdf.    The matte screen of the kindle is the best, IMO.  It should do what you need, especially since the paperwhite enbales you to read in poor light, where the regular kindle does not.  I have an original and it's fantastic.

The kindle paperwhite is epic.  Best device out there.  You'll never go back to paper books again.  I knew a lot of people that swore they are book purists, then they used the kindle and never want to flip through paper again.

Amazing device the kindle - wish I'd brought one sooner.

CLEAN, I bought a KINDLE before the HD version was introduced (not the black and white one)
and although this may NOT be a direct response to your question .....

I joined the Amazon Prime 'thing' for $70 a year (approximately) and that PRIME MEMBERSHIP  has encouraged me to purchase another Kindle ....  but this time it will be the larger HD version.

I discovered that I receive all sorts of 'free stuff' as a Prime member .... the most noteworthy being FREE SHIPPING for all Amazon purchases identified as "Prime".

I make numerous AMAZON purchases so this free shipping comes in very handy.

Plus I find it of great help when I can order anything from AMAZOn with a simple 'One Click' and my orders seem to be placed in the mail immediately because I receive most orders within 48 hours.

Sorry to be off topic here but PRIME MEMBERSHIP is one  of the advantages of owning a KINDLE and a KINDLe is a hell of a lot cheaper than an iPAD.

Buying a kindle for reading PDF is a terrible idea, too small, slow and non colour, 5-6 inch e-ink readers were made to read mobi and epub format designed for that screensize. If you are just confusing PDF with regular fiction and non fiction ebooks, like the e-books sold on amazon then its fine, buy an e-ink reader, the nook simple touch is the current best value by far and the one to buy.If you want to read technicals pdf's, which are for large sized and more detailed books which feature pictures, graphs etc for things like computer programming, DIY etc then buy a 10inch tablet to read the PDF on, lots of good value Android tablets out now.

Edit:if you read a combination of regular and technical books, and have been reading them on your laptop, then just buy a tablet, will display both fine.

Reread my inital post. You seem to be confused.

I read it, you seem to not be capable of understanding my answer.

Kindle version = mobi format, kindles can display PDF , which is an entirely different beast from mobi (which is designed to be small in file size and mainly for text).

PDF= large resource hungry format, large file sizes, bring kindles to a standstill when you try to open them, great for large a4+ books with lots of colour pictures, shit for generic fiction/non fiction of mainly text, trying to read an A4 colour book on a 6inch black and white screen is like masturbating with a cheese grater, if you have been downloading PDFs over the years for text fiction/non fiction books then you have been doing it wrong.

ARMY, I am DUMB when it comes to technical stuff regarding any and all computers and now you have convinced me that I am dumber than I originally expected.

Mobi?
Epub?

And ‘PDF’!  I have no indea what ‘PDF’ means but I use those letters to search for downloadable ebooks on the internet … Dancing Wu Li Masters PDF, Muscle Smoke and Mirrors PDF, etc.

I am posting this because you may be mistaken regarding the latest versions of Kindle ‘readers’’.

I believe that the latest model has a larger screen, is HD, full color and displays books with photos, but I have no idea if  it works with mobi or epub … both of which I don’t think I need.

I  post this because I plan to buy the latest and  largest screen (7 inch??) Kindle this week and look forward to hear your recommendations.

The only ‘tech books’ I read are ebooks relating to the basic understanding of computer programs such as Dreamweaver and very basic QM topics.

Thanks…

CLEANEST... Sorry to be off tipoic here.

Read it again until you get it. Good luck.

You said you read PDFs ,only retards read text based books in PDF , they are for large technical books.

So from a man who read mostly PDFs now you are going to buy a kindle which is terrible for displaying PDFs?

yes, you can get alot of books you read in the mobi format from amazon store, but the books you say " you can't get" for kindle, when you can get them from forums out there where people scan full books but in to PDF, where you can request ANY book.

So rather than buy the tablet that fits your needs of reading both kindle mobi books, along with your 4000 word garbage (yes you can read kindle books on a tablet) and the books you can't get from the Kindle store which you can download from someone's scans in PDF, you'd rather go against your needs and criteria you asked for advice in?

Nice one, Einstein.Guess those Soviets need to work harder at controlling your mind to function properly.

You are talking about the kindle fire, which is just an android tablet with amazon branding and customised os,it can be bought, rooted and standard android installed. This is better for someone like yourself who reads the dummies type books, buy the 8.9inch version, not the 7inch.This is nothing like the standard kindle, which is a 6inch e-ink and designed for standard paperback book sizes.

Problem is you don't own these titles - you license them. And they can be arbitrarily erased from your device. Boing Boing harps on this licensing stuff, a lot. I'm a book guy/collector, so I'm biased, but man if you get a lot of books they can take up a shit ton of space. That's one downside to the physical.

Nobody mentioned Calibre yet? You mob fail  >:(

Grab Calibre and you can convert pretty much anything to Mobi format (kindle format). I've not tried PDF-> Mobi yet as I use my iPad for large PDFs. It should work. But ePub which seems to be the preferred format of eBook pirates converts just fine. Though Mobi is making strong headway into the game

Only played around with the Kindle Fire but weren't impressed. If you have an iPad, I see little point in the Fire.

Kindle versions are always cheaper.  Less materials.  Do not buy a tablet thinking it's a reader.  Reading on an ipad is impossible.  same with the fire.  buy a reader for reading and a tablet for internet, apps etc...

The problem with Kindles and their competitors, is that they have no light installed in them. At least the original ones.

So you need an external light source to read them.

Where I work we get bussed to and from site which can be a 30 to 90 minute ride. There is no lighting on the bus for reading, so you have to bring your own. Many people bought Kindles and then realized this little "glitch" after.

Most people buy Kindles and assume they have a built in light because they are electronic, but they don't.

I thought THAT was the whole point with kindle .. self luminiscent. You don't actually need a light. Am I wrong?

Paperwhite solves this issue, whereas the originals do not.  You're all set.

You are about the first ones. I have not seen what the latest models bring to the table.

The first ones were not self luminescent.

I have yet to see a KINDLE that needs a flashlight. In fact I have never seen any computer type screen that requires a flashlight to see it.

My KINDLE is phenominal for reading in the dark or even on the beach at noon.

If you have a KINDLE, I strongly suggest you join AMAZON PRIME.

I've got the kindle paperwhite and it has a luminescent screen and still boasts amazing battery life. I take prolonged hikes and do bike touring and it is the first item I pack. I can take a library books on it and it has increased my reading on all subjects. Brilliant device.

The lack of a backlight is the reason it doesn't burn your eyes out.

I can't read books in the dark either.
