Title: Savage Run, anyone do one?
Post by: bigbadwolfe on November 22, 2013, 08:25:37 PM
So I start my journey to getting my fat ass in shape for this run tomorrow morning. I have approx 6 months to be ready, I currently weigh around 350-360 need to get my BW down to 240-250 area to do this. For all that are new to the board I fluctuate BW very drastically very easily. One year I may be 240 the next 340 the next 400. It is just something I do depending on what my goals and objectives are. My question is have any of you done one of these and if so how did you train for it?

I have been around the sport of running for a few years cause my wife is a runner but she has never did anything like this. We are running in honor of a team mates deceased father. Hopefully this damn thing dont kill us.

Any good advice would be helpful, any smart ass comments will just be chuckled at :)

This is how i got fit, pick a small route. See how it goes, time it, count how many times you stop.Next time try stop les times. Try faster and so on. When you can do that without stopping increase the distance.

I'm actually thinking about going with a SWAT/Military type boot cause the need for ankle support. My knees and ankles are shot, I have ruptured both of my plantar ligaments in both feet. Partial rupture of the left and a full rupture of the right plus my ATF and PTF in my right foot. Had surgery to repair my right foot back in 2000 tore my left Plantar about 5 yrs ago it was a partial rupture that never healed right. Soooo with that said I need support.

At that weight you probably have serious health problems. You should get examined by a doctor to find out if exercise could kill you. I would forget about any type of tough mudder or savage run for now. It's possible but you have a ton of work to do. Your weight I would guess is a major contributor to your foot problems.

Try this if you get a doctor's clearance. Walk on a quality treadmill at 3.8 MPH. At your condition you might be able to make a half or one lap.  Most treadmills show an electronic 400 meter or 440 yard track. Some without a track will show .25 indicating a lap on a track. What you want to do is walk 3.8 MPH on a level grade on the treadmill. The second lap is going to be at a 1% incline grade. Lap three will be 2% incline and so on. Your goal is to see how far up the incline grade you can get lap by lap. When you hit what you think will be your last grade increase reward yourself with a lap on level ground. It will feel like you are flying.

The goal is to eventually keep doing laps until you get up to around 12% level lap by lap. If you do you can start running because you will be in very good cardio shape. Your legs will be conditioned now for running.

Like I said before get the ok from a doctor to try this walking routine to make sure they don't find you dead by the treadmill or two damaged feet.  It is really challenging for most. In the end biking or swimming might be the cardio of choice for you. Just don't dog the bike or swim sessions and push yourself.

Your knees and ankles are shot and you are huge. So why would you want to do this?

Just from my experiences so far take it for what its worth:

Level of difficulty

Easiest to hardest

1.  Merrell Down and Dirty (FUN!)  http://www.downanddirtymudrun.com

2.  Civilian Military Combine (The PIT is not easy though)  www.civilianmilitarycomb ine.com

3.  Spartan Race - Stadium Races   www.spartanrace.com

4.  Spartan Race - Sprint - not easy at all.  Usually a lot of elevation

5.  Tough Mudder - www.toughmudder.com

6.  GoRuck Light  -   www.goruck.com    Remember Light does not Equal Easy -  GR Light is way harder than TM or Spartan Race

7.  GoRuck Challenge - 12-15 hours - shit lod of PT and 20-25 miles w50 ruck sack

8.  GoRuck HEAVY - Have it in two weeks and a bit scared.  24+ Hours 50 Miles and endless PT w 50lbs ruck

As noted, foot care is critical for anyone, especially someone as big as you. Be consistent, drop the anabolics, eat clean and the weight will pour off.  240 is still huge but you'll be able to run 10K successfully.

I have gone from 303 to 190. Big cardio was a huge part of doing it.

For the first one - go w one that is a 5k - like Down n Dirty or the Spartan Stadium Races.   Don't jump into a grueling 10 mile plus ordeal.   Setting yourself up for a disaster.

TM is a good time and they let people skip things.  The obstacles themselves are not easy though and mess w you like the ice bath, the electrocution, and the leap of faith

There is a penalty w Spartan Race of 30 burpees if you fail something and w Go Ruck you keep the pace or you drop out.

They are all fun events - but I shy away from some of the fly by night operations since the obstacles are not safe, and who the F wants to go home injured due to a shitty company just setting up bs?

Well obviously you're not 'tearing through them fast' due to running or activity so my advice is try eating less.

Do everything you ABSOLUTELY can to get that weight off immediately. Find a Registered Dietitian that does consulting work, get on a good diet and start cardio.....like yesterday.

Thank you WW.  It was actually easy for me. I'm 6'0" on the dot with a slight frame, so weighing 300 was very very difficult. As soon as I dropped the Anadrol, Test and Dianabol, weight poured off me. I also went from 4,000-5,000 calories EVERY SINGLE DAY to 2,500- 3,000 clean calories daily. I rode the stationary bike one (1) full hour seven days a week. No exceptions. I'll find a few before & after pics and post them.

I will for sure be investing in some very very good foot wear, as for the anabolics aint touched anything in over 3 yrs. Cleaned the diet up pretty good thus far, I'm down 50 since July but need to drop a lot more. I've added cardio and will gradually be bumping it up over the next 6 months.
