Anyone else visited Cuba?
I had the chance to go on an a cruise out of Tampa. Docked at 8am and had to be back on board by 1:30 am. It was one of those experiences that will definitely stay with me. The first impression from walking off the ship was of traveling back in time to the 60's. Almost every car was some kind of 50's model car. The architecture and condition of the buildings set the scene. We took a classic car tour in a convertible around the city. The people were friendly. I had filled a back pack with small toys like hot wheel cars, frisbees and inflatable beach balls. I had read that some children may have one toy. The reaction we got handing out the items were priceless. The $1 hot wheels car could have been the latest Xbox by the look on their face and appreciation. I didn't realize that I'd have to demonstrate a frisbee as many had never seen one. Or explain to an adult about the beach ball and how to inflate it. Things I hadn't really thought about. And as we walked the city, and people saw us hand out things to children, some would approach and instead of asking for money, would ask if we had any gum, or soap or shampoo. Truly a humbling experience. While we were told the salary for a Doctor is about $30 a month and a regular worker $16, people seemed happy, and took pride in their heritage. I definitely recommend it.

"Seemed" is the right word. I know many Cubans, some in my own family. People in Cuba aren't happy, unless they're in the top level military and government.
"In 1959, the Cuban Revolution unleashed the largest refugee flow to the United States in history, with approximately 1.4 million people fleeing the island after the toppling of dictator Fulgencio Batista by Fidel Castro’s guerrilla fighters. Since then, Cuba has remained one of the top migrant-sending nations to its northern neighbor, and the Cuban exodus has been oriented primarily toward the mainland United States. In addition, at least 300,000 Cubans have relocated to Spain, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, and other Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as Canada and European nations such as Germany, Italy, and France."

Very nice of you to come bearing gifts for them. You are lucky you weren't harassed by the local police for doing that, "espia Americano repartiendo propaganda Capitalista."

I certainly can't speak for the Cuban people and you are more than likely right. My wife speaks spanish and we chatted with many of the locals, some in casual park settings and most if not all spoke positively about the current government. Seemed to be happy with life. Granted, we didn't venture out of Havana but that was the impression we got. It certainly could be flawed.

LOL...that's because saying anything else will land them in a Cuban jail. No such thing as free speech in Cuba.

Of course they would! Imagine if they were reported to the local political Commissar?
If they say anything negative about the regime or their poverty, they would be arrested or punished.

No, but I know in the US many things are crimes, and people still commit them. So chatting with people about your country and life, maybe some would be hesitant to tell the truth, but seems to me others might not be thinking a cop is around the corner listening or the people they are talking with are spies for the government. So human nature, I know a little bit about. It's human nature that if you hear something that doesn't fit your preconceived notion, you tend to come up with explanations that will allow you to keep your belief. If you believe everyone in Cuba is miserable, and someone who has been there says they talked to some people who spoke fondly of their heritage and country, it would be normal to then say they only said that under duress.

Speaking fondly of their heritage and of their country is very different than being happy with life in the Island and feeling positive about their government. Two completely different things.
And yes, everything you believe to be a little over the top is actually worse than you think.

I have no dog in this fight, OP is generally a faggy libfuck and delusional to think Cuba (shithole) is a nice place.
However at least in California, the cops I know retire with like 90% of their 100k+ salary and another 500k in a 401k type account. Lifetime medical as well.
I know the ritz Carlton in buttfuck Georgia is pretty cool and all.

How was flying in and out of Cuba? Smooth process? I would love to do a Cruise that did a stop in Cuba. I'll have to see if that is an option.

The three great successes of the Cuban revolution are medicine, education, and sports.
The great failures of the Cuban revolution are breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

We came in on a cruise ship. That process was pretty smooth. It was an amazing experience for me, glad I was fortunate enough to do it. I definitely will go back again in the future.

Shows how spoiled and unapreciative we have become...Especially liberals...
-
I have been three times. Two times in the past year via cruise ship (on my side gig), but the first time ten years ago when I graduated college and flew in via Mexico City and a Mexican visa a.k.a "tourist card".
What you see now, is nothing like it was back then. The poverty was even more crushing back then. And people did NOT come up to you and beg that often as they never knew who you were and whether you in some agency that would have them carted off and "disappeared" for good. Back then regular citizens who had American dollars in their possession would be targeted if the cops or gov't found out.

I had fewer people approaching me than I did in Austin Tx. And while in Austin, the begging was for cash 100% of the time. Mexico was worse. In Cuba it was mostly things like soap, gum, but there were a couple that asked for anything.
I'll bet it has improved over the last 10 years and will continue to improve with the influx of American tourists. I don't know how much better for the people, but it will certainly be income for the state.

I recommend an episode of the Podcast 83 Weeks. Eric Bischoff describes his trip to North Korea to put on a wrestling show.
He said that at 5’10, he felt like a giant because the people were so undernourished.
That said, leader of the country seems well fed.
I’ve noticed that when liberals visit socialist countries they report back very favorably. Of course they see things from a very superficial level. Spend three months there and then get back to us.

First I will say I am Cuban. Prior to 1959 it was the play ground of the rich and famous. Night clubs and hotels were first rate and class. A favorite of Sinatra, Hemingway and many others of means. While it was still dictator run people had a measure of wealth. Castro and Che came with the revolution for communism. The buildings and assets were confiscated. The only rich people were politicians and the politically connected. People were tortured and thrown in jail for being vocal about how the country was crashing. White Cubans in mass fled to the US. Their destination was two places. Miami and NJ. The country plunged into poverty. Cuba was the destination now of wanted criminals for protection. They just had to say they were revolutionist and they were granted protection.
Cubans as a whole are very industrialist and they prospered in the US. In NJ they settled in cities like Union city in NJ. Soon they owned new car dealerships, pharmacies and other businesses. They then moved from the city to the suburbs and their children married outside of Cubans.
Cuba is stuck in time. It's sad because the people have so much potential. Hard to categorize people but they are hard working and know how to make money if given freedom. If nothing else their white women have some great asses.

I always wanted to go to Japan and India, but never had the chance. In Spain, theres a lot of British People, so its prolly the place that they dont really care, cause Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca most of local people speak English.
I think Dorian Yates currently lives in Mallorca, btw

I was wondering the same, are Cuban women attractive?
Since their economy is in ruins, there might be more opportunities to date very attractive young women in exchange for gifts / money?
Same for Venezuela I think

I can't speak for anyone else, but for myself it was a gig. As I have stated before, I do travel photography on the side for a friend that owns a travel agency for "dream" vacations. I have been all over the world. For free. And got paid for it. Which I think needs to be mentioned because some of the places I have been to, I would never have had a passing interest in otherwise. One thing I have learned about traveling is that it is always better to go to a place and find out you don't like it, than to sit around thinking you don't like it and missing out.
A lot of places I would never have any interest in actually surprised me. Then again, a lot of places that most people think are awesome, were very overrated to me. Last month from April 6-21 I did a gig in Singapore and Australia. (Cairns/Port Douglas and Sydney). I have been to those places before, but quite a few people on this trip were very surprised at Singapore and thought Australia was just "so-so"
You won't know unless you go.

And guys, if a grown man travels to America with a bag full of kids toys and searches out kids to give them to... we have a name for that person... pedofile. Or at the very least... creep.
Don't give toys to little kids you don't know.

Serious question. What type of camera do you use and can it be used for taking off- shore surf shots? We have pro-surfer that’s willing to help brand our apparel but want to take a lot of photography myself.
If you go to RVCA’s IG you can get idea of what I’m talking about

I take two cameras with me. Both are older model Canon 20D's. I have shot so many photos that I never take it out of manual mode at this point.
One 20D has a Tamron 17-50 2.8 on it that has never come off in 10 years. This is the non VC version. I am very good at being steady for slow shutter speeds. Tamron does make a VC version of this lens which is more expensive, but I have only used mine twice. I found it very loud and slow to focus. Canon makes a great lens in this range with IS and at 2.8 as well, but it is bigger and heavier. And more expensive. Overall, I have found the small Tamron non VC version to be a fantastic workhorse. It gives better natural tones in warmer colors like red and yellows (skin tones, etc.) than Canon which is much better in the cooler temp color like blue and green.
The second 20D, I rotate lens on it. In Sydney, I went to Bondi Beach and shot some photos there from the beach with my 100-400 f4. You don't need a bigger AV range than that for beach shots since there is so much sunlight anyway. I have a Canon 85 1.4 that is simply awesome for portraits and studio modeling. The 1.8 version is great too at a fraction of the price. I sometimes use fisheyes lens, wide angle lens (Sigma is better here), or the Canon 70-300 IS II USM lens which is a fantastic telephoto on par with their "L" series but is much better for walking around than my bulky 100-400 lens.
As far as actually going in the water and getting wet, I wouldn't take my gear in water over my waist. If I had to do shots like that, I would simply go to a camera shop and rent a waterproof setup for about $100 per day.
When I was in Port Douglas, we did a snorkel and dive trip over the Great Barrier Reef and they had decent little cameras for rent for $35 the entire day. I was amazed at the quality of photos they delivered at 10 feet underwater for such a small camera.
But if you

And guys, if a grown man travels to America with a bag full of kids toys and searches out kids to give them to... we have a name for that person... pedofile. Or at the very least... creep.
Don't give toys to little kids you don't know.
Or, you just use common sense and you ask the parents permission first. Helped that my wife was with me But I certainly do see your point, however negative it is for what should be a pretty positive experience.

Serious question, why would anyone want to go to Cuba?Im just asking as you say it’s poor etc... just wondering the attraction.Im not one to venture out of the USA.So genuinely curious.
For me, there are different types of vacations I do. 1 is the complete chill type vacation. My favorite for this is Secrets Maroma Beach in Playa Del Carmen. Then there is the Adventure vacation, my favorite so far is Costa Rica. Lots of on the go things, little down time. But I've always been curious about Cuba, especially Havana. For decades it was off limits to me but I had heard it was like time stopped in the 60's, and I wanted to experience that. It's certainly not a place I would live, but I'm very glad I went, and I recommend it to anyone who likes old cars, and seeing a country that seems locked in history.

Wrong timing 4 Sydney, U need to be on Sydney beaches meat market in December-January ........like on Bells now !.
U could stay in 1 of my beach shacks ( between Cairns & Port Douglas) Trump supporters for free ,other Yanks $ ??? (cash only) 8)
15 days to see Aussie ::) no bloody way 8)

Because living in a communist dictatorship where all the buildings are falling to pieces and the cars or literally antiques rusting apart and where people earn a few dollars a month and don't even have soap or shampoo is a paradise.

GTFO with that shit.

Love the place. Going again for a week in July. Varadero this time, and prob take a day trip to Havana. Best beaches, cigars and rum in the world, rarely crowded, super nice people, no beggars or panhandlers (even rare in Havana). Best of all, no obnoxious, drunken Americans! Lol jk, kinda. People won’t understand until the actually visit the place. IMO, Cuba is the best for the “chill” vacation you mention. I’ve been to several other Caribbean countries, but I prefer Cuba b/c it’s way less crowded, less drunken fools, safe to leave the resorts and you dont have to deal with the locals tormenting you to buys shit. There are people selling their wares in Cuba, but a) they dont do it on the beach (except maybe a massage), and b) they wont bother you to buy. They simply set up shot and sit around until a customer approaches. That’s the way it should be.

If anyone would like I’d give you the details of the two weeks I spent in Prague. Lurker, it’s ok if you need a map to figure out where Prague is located. We know you don’t get out of your ghetto apartment much.

Im not big on Travel, I like FLA (maybe I can meet up w/ Joe Val), Aruba is about the extent of our Island vacations. (Its close, small and not too many tards and crime like Mexico).
I think Ireland and Iceland would be cool to visit though.

Ok.. seems a little over the top, but what do I know.
Every neighborhood has a snitch that reports anything they feel is anti-government. My step father is Cuban with plenty of family still living there. Once you get reported the police come drag you out and take you to jail then charge you with crimes against the government.
