Those shrugs are spine killers.

He could have got just as big training lighter.

I go lighter now on shrugs, but I hold peak contraction, make it count, screw ruining my back just to get huge traps

Heavy deadlifting is all the heavy-heavy training that’s required for the traps.

Any shrugging as an accessory doesn’t need to be retard-heavy as Ronnie’s doing there.

Tight shrugs with 80-140-pound dumbells would have done as much ... and without the horrific spinal assault.

Plus his shoulders are internally rotated with that grip.

Ah yes, "pigeon shrugs".  So named because the head juts forward and then back with each worthless "shrug" performed, just as a pigeon's head does when it walks.

I have never done those... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not for everyone though, some people were not created with great trap genetics, myself included, so we have to hit the traps hard, or else we have no traps whatsoever

heavy trap work is useless. you end up getting very little work where it's needed.

light shrugs, upright rows and even dumbbell laterals (with focus on contracting the traps on the way up) are better options.

the ronnie coleman, branch warren, yates etc. style of training is something you do in your 20s to build your foundation. Them guys would have done better if they focused on volume after they peaked in size.

Ballistic heavy training on curls, or delt laterals only

Doing heavy ballistic squats is a gamble

After 30+ years training, that poundage becomes too heavy and counter productive.  I never go above 80lb dumbbells.  As many full reps as possible til failure.  3 sets, that's it.

Seconded my traps get their size from deadlifts. I still do shrugs but they do very little in comparison.

As much as I love Ronnie, 85 is the black American average IQ, and he seems even dumber than your typical dindu.  I'm guessing 77-82.

For a fun comparison, Lee Haney doing his trademark behind-the-back shrugs/Haney shrugs.  :)
