Title: No New Cars
Post by: BayGBM on September 30, 2021, 12:19:30 PM
Have you been to an auto dealership lately?  We have seen news reports about the chip shortage but seeing it in person is something else:  there is almost no inventory.  I took my truck in for service this morning and there was one car in the show room.  One! Normally it would be filled with 7-12 gleaming new models.  Out front there are typically rows and rows of trucks, cars, and SUVs of all colors and pennants blowing in the wind.  There were literally zero vehicles in front of this Toyota dealer. It looked like something out of a zombie movie.

The used car lot wasn’t much better and used car prices are sky high.  They told me I could sell my 2019 truck back to the dealership for $3-5k more than my purchase price.  They also mentioned this has happened at all dealers of all makes and models.  Not a good time to be buying a new car.  :-X

3-5 year old Toyota trucks are selling at original sticker.

20% real inflation in one year under Biden.

I have a friend that owns a GM dealership.

It’s not just the chips. No shortage of TVs or iPhones in case you didn’t notice. It’s a shortage of LOTS of parts.

Call your local Chevy dealer today and ask for a set of brake pads for an HD Silverado. None available NATIONWIDE. Fuggin brake pads.

Welcome to the “Great Reset”. They are building back better.

Agreed.  The global supply chain is in serious trouble… but it’s not real until it happens to YOU…or until YOU see it with your own eyes.

Aug-Sep was a logistics squeeze as Consumer bought up available containers for a Christmas goods and bulky low value items got bumped from ships as a result.

You will still be able to buy the latest iPhone, AirPods, laptop at the drop of a hat but the shit you need like furniture, bedding, cars etc will have inventory problems and resulting price increases.

2022 will see shortages get worse. Expect product range rationalisation. Things like your kitchen alliances that have 20 colours will have 3 colours. Cars that have 10 colours will have 2 colours. Shit like that.

The global supply chain is not fixed and is broken. I work in this field at a senior level and I hate to tell you but the stuff happening now all points to Globalisation being wound back. There is a decarbonisation program underway, you’ll hear all about energy shortages next impacting production.

Something is wrong.  Very wrong. Last week Lexus sent me an email offering to buy back my 2018 RX350. They offered $8,000 under sticker... for a three year old SUV. Something is wrong.

Good. We'll live. The backup from China is good- screw them. Just go back to the 1970's when we made most of our shit in the USA. I'm good with that.

My friend has a couple car dealership.  He had 9 cars on the lot and the end of last month.  Totally crazy.  I paid 5k over sticker for my wife's escalade but it the grand scheme of things it doesn't seem that bad.  I would never do it under normal circumstances.

IMO It’s a fair assumption to expect 20% price increases in vehicles in 2022.

We bought one of those ‘63 Mercedes SUVs for my wife this year ahead of the price increases. price went up 30k after.

I have a tastefully modded ute and I could sell that for what it cost me even now after 2yrs. Utes here are the best value holding vehicle and prices are ripping up.

Agree.

My friends and family are always shocked when I tell them if given today vs 1960s I’d choose the 1960s. The wastage we have is pure insanity and I have disposed tonnes of shit all over Asia pacific. No joke 85% of ‘broken’ consumer product returned from customers works but it’s too expensive to repair it so we bin it.

At one point I warned a business we had crossed a cost threshold where if a customer calls and says it’s broken, it’s best we simply send a new one to then and ask the customer to bin it at their house. Now, you can’t do that obviously but that’s how cheap products are vs labour-freight etc.  Total insanity.

Make shit crazy expensive again. Make items valuable to use because of how much we paid. Reduce consumption. Reduce wastage. Brings jobs and manufacturing back home. Much better.

I grew up in Syracuse, NY. I watched it slowly die as factories closed, one after the other, for cheap stuff from Asia. I think the pendulum is now swinging back. It's about time!

By the way, refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc made in the 60's last 40 years or more- my grandmother had one that was still going strong when she died in the 2000's. Now you are lucky to get 5 years out of them before something breaks. Time to bring back quality. Not everything needs to be disposable.

One of my brothers recently retired and then sold his Jeep after driving it for 2.5 years for (I think) $2,500 t0 $3,500 more than he paid for it.

I was recently offered (sight unseen) by a couple of dealers $40,000 to $45,000 for my 2018 Ram (it is an EcoDiesel model).   I told them politely no, thank you.  To replace it would cost me over $70,000 right now.  Admittedly it is very low mileage but there is no way I would sell right now as I like my truck just fine.  The same is true of my other two vehicles.  They are currently worth a lot more due to this BS, but I am not going to sell either of them as they work great and I don't want to have to replace them with something costing me 40 to 60 grand.

I am grateful and  happy for what we have.

Thanks Biden. We haven't seen the worst of the inflation yet. Wait till they pass the so called infrastructure bill raising the debt ceiling and starts printing money.  If the federal government  start defaulting we are toast. The new nominee Biden wants appointed is Saule Omarova as Comptroller of the Currency. She wants no private banks and only government banks. She is also wants cyrptocurrency heavily regulated to have any ties to banks for pay out.  In the new infrastructure bill they want banks to notify the Federal government of all bank  transactions over $600. This economy is about to take a severe nose dive.

Seen the news about all the freighters floating off our coasts?
We pay more to dock in China to load those ships, We don't have enough workers to unload the ships when they get here, We don't have enough truckers to deliver whats in those ships to the warehouses, We don't have enough workers to unload the items and put them on shelves, We don't have enough workers to pull the items off the shelves and load up the trucks that deliver the products, We don't have enough workers to unload the trucks when they get to the final destination, We don't have enough workers to sell the product....

The world operated with air freight and sea freight.

When the pandemic grounded most freighters and many passenger airlines, everybody moved to sea freight.

Our sea freight is not equipped to handle all global volume. It simply cannot do it.

This is why these shortages will not go away. Even when you can get product produced, you can't get it on board vessels. Then when you can, it takes twice as long because of the delays.

This is why it's a deflationary model. We are seeing productivity and volume decrease which is putting upwards pressure on prices and downward pressure on wages. This is where the pain begins but we have years of this ahead.

Even more critical than that, Taiwan owns the machines that make next generation chips, called deep UV or extreme UV lithography systems. These are embargoed for sale to China. That's the real reason China wants to invade Taiwan. These systems are so difficult to build that it has been estimated it would take China 10 years and a trillion dollars to match the tech. By then the next generation would be in place.

Exactly. The US came up with everything that China makes of any technical value. Everything.

A communist system restricts free thought- that same free thought that leads to constant innovation. So they have to steal everything and try to copy it. In the beginning of the film the prospective buyer who has been waiting for his car for several months asked his dealer, “What am I, a “forgotten man”?

This is a term for “hobos” or as we call them now, the “homeless”, aka bums.

I have a heap of marble coming from Italy for our new house being built. It’s things like this that will triple in price next year.

Furniture is a big one also anything steel/aluminium related. But just remember you will earn the same wage and a cupboard will be 10x it’s price today.

Since NONE of the mRNA vaccines actually work, it means they've accomplished nothing in Cuba. And although my original comment was about China (I know, they both start with a C and end with an A so you were confused), Cuba has invented nothing of value either. That’s not fair.

Cuba has only had 60 years to learn about automobile technology. It won’t be much longer until they’ve figured mass production, assembly line manufacturing and distribution of goods.

It takes very little to total a car today.  It's cheaper for the insurance company to junk them. Repairing cars are through the roof now.

Especially after the car is older.

I have a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country in great condition.  Cost $29,000 new but now book value around $3-$4k.

Any kind of collision now and it would be totaled and they'd send me a check.

A defensive driving course doesn't prevent someone else from crashing into you unfortunately.  Would save you a few bucks on your insurance premium but sitting through a multi-hour driving lecture is hardly worth it unless you are a very bored individual.

That’s not fair.

Cuba has only had 60 years to learn about automobile technology. It won’t be much longer until they’ve figured mass production, assembly line manufacturing and distribution of goods.
Communism works everywhere it's tried. :-\

The discussion was regarding the accomplishments of communist countries, and Cuba is under communist rule.  Hence its relevance to the discussion.  Are you able to follow that path of logic?  If not, I can break it down even further for you.

Not likely.  More likely is China's economic meltdown and crash from over-valued, unregulated stock market, real estate and defaulted debt.

At some point the Chinese Commmunists will fall.

Please do.

So Cuba, in less than a years time Cuba has developed 2 Covid vaccines, but in 60 years they haven't developed a single automobile technology?

Hypertrophy asked for an example of a Cuban made automobile, I said the need a little more time to develop one.

I'm sorry if you find this offensive.

Your car has nearly 10 times the mileage my 5 year old Mazda does. I keep my car working by driving it a little as possible and getting it serviced right on schedule. It may be the last car I buy.
Had to laugh at that one.
