Saw that too... He's likely been stuck in a hospital bed for a few weeks and they're telling him all bad shit and he's depressed...

Do you fear for his health? It seems like Flex has been in and out of hospital constantly for the last 3 years.

Do you think?  After he had the bicep removed, I feel like I didn't seem to see him as much - at least, not in a medical setting.  And he was still at war with the Iron

Although typing this has stirred up some memory sediment (sedimemory?) - didn't I read recently(ish) that he was getting to the point where he needed a new kidney, or a tune-up of the one he's got, or something..🤔

If you're at the point where you need amputations it doesnt portend well for your future.  LOL at Flex calling himself a dreamer

I think that's due to the amount of time he spends under anaesthetic and/or smashed on opiates, his eyes rolling back in his head in reverie, while he slo-mo replays the moment he hit the full splits on stage in his Pro debut, hearing the gasps from the crowd anew each time he recalls that golden moment...

Or

He's that thick in real life that he's had to come up with a reason he responds to even the simplest question with a blank look... "I was dreaming my next signature supplement line logo, man..."

Flex is a sad story.

I bet it's depressing as fuck looking back at pics from when he had the mansion and trucks, with the hot mulatto looking wife.

It's a shame he didn't come up during the social media era, as his income potential would have been much higher (same for all the 90s legends).

He was a dude blessed with great genetics and  low self-esteem. Combine them with a few guys who tell him what he's always wanted to hear, provided him with drugs so long as he does what they say. It's gonna be like hitting the lottery.

Every time you pull that lever at the slot machine (follow instructions), money pours out. You never see an end... But human bodies aren't machines, we break down. After 20yrs of pulling that slot machine handle and winning, all of a sudden you're not only not winning, you're losing (in life, no matter situation... Financial, health, family, etc..) it's hard to deal with for someone who's always come out on top

He said he went there for another left shoulder surgery.

If he was abused as a child it was probably the beginning of the end for him when it happened.

Most accounts of him in his heyday of being obnoxious and his lust for attention show a highly insecure person.

It really shows the mentality of many of these pros who get a second chance and still squander it.

I've never heard him say anything more about it, but some of the other pros laugh about it now as bullshit.

Flex skips over it in his autobiography, not one word about the 97 Olympia. From the sound of it in the book, he was just partying too hard off endorsements and the Arnold Classic money that year.

He also makes a big thing about the house in that photo above being #26,000 square ft including the grounds, and how much he loved it, but wishes he kept some money aside instead of buying it, and the cars, etc.....

Also he talked about breaking his neck in 95 and Dr. Dre and Lou Ferrigno visiting him tin the hospital. Lou brought him chocolates, and got weepy when he saw Flex all busted up.

Cormier said that Wheeler was way out of shape, and out of frustration, Flex punched a mirror. Apparently he was posing in front of a mirror and he looked like shit. Flex punched the mirror and he cut his hand badly. He went to the hospital for treatment.

Nevertheless, Flex as a physique was untouchable at times.  As a person, he was kind of shitty overall.

I recall him telling he plans to invest zero hours in bodybuilding after his completion days are over, and he made a joke about, if it would be possible he would keep it minus hours.
I guess he tried to denounce bodybuilding and how little it means for him, then he competed with kidney transplant, talk about total lack of insight.

I recall him telling he plans to invest zero hours in bodybuilding after his completion days are over, and he made a joke about, if it would be possible he would keep it minus hours.
I guess he tried to denounce bodybuilding and how little it means for him, then he competed with kidney transplant, talk about total lack of insight.

this kinda shit pisses me off a bit, he owes pretty much everything to bodybuilding.  Idk why he thinks he was too good for the sport but that's probably why nobody likes him :-X

It must be depressing as hell to get old after having a near perfect physique. This is why you don't derive your self esteem from the meat suit you are wearing.

i once read a description of a retired Samir Bannout as "relaxed with the sort of ease that comes only when you know that your body was--and could possibly still transform to be--one of the greatest physiques the world ever saw"

Always thought that was a more positive way of looking at the aging process.  Be glad the past happened at all, dont lament that its come to an end

As somebody suggested here, he probably had a fcked up childhood.
My late brother was just like that, he lacked sincerity, he was fragile and broken because of my father, and he just tried to construct a stronger shell, some succeed some just doesn't, one thing is sure, you can't be happy denying your true self.

Never looked at it that way (ty!) …I’m sorry for what he’s going thru ….at the same time he was a grade A douche bag back in the day! … he definitely doesn’t Deserve all these health problems he has. … but he never should have continued bodybuilding/ competing after someone so bravely gave him/ donated their Kidney!

I think we all agree you look great, especially compared to how you looked when you first showed up here (I’m not insulting you, you were big but you are in great condition now).

At his peak Flex was a star. It seemed like he had a transition plan in place to stay relevant after competing but maybe the kidney and injuries side tracked that.

I’m sure we all believe he could have stayed in decent shape/size post retirement if he would have done things differently but maybe he had already gone to far.

As it was mentioned I do recall Flex saying he was going to have nothing to do with BB/fitness after his retirement but we know that wasn’t true. The transition from being the man to being a man was probably difficult.

I’ve met Flex a couple of times at the Arnold, all past his competing prime.

The first time he was competing in a karate match. All I remember is how winded he was after and how he could not catch his breath. I don’t think I hung around much after that, I thought it was weird how there wasn’t a crowd around him for his “match” or even afterwards to talk to him. It was the mid 2000s and he was still “Flex”.

The other time Flex was working for MD one year as a journalist covering the Arnold. I ran into him after pre judging (he was completely unrecognizable, he had grown out his hair and was very thin. He was wearing a very baggy shirt. He may have been on the transplant list at this time. I only knew it was him because of his name tag) and was excited to ask his thoughts on the show and he wanted no part of discussing his thoughts on who was placed where. But he did say he thought Dexter had won (I think this was the year Cormier should have won but Cutler beat him) I remember thinking he seemed shy and awkward but I assumed it was because he was so small.

It sucks to see people suffer.

heaviest I ever got was over 300 lbs (usually I was somewhere in the 270-280 range ) Flex was only around 230 there … if I was to guess my guess on my weight would be around 270 (Flex looks and is much bigger than I am. He was this crazy illusion even in person …,  just these round bulbous muscles / muscle bellies Tiny Tiny joints .. it was like he put the muscle exactly where he wanted it/ arms / shoulders / back etc , but kept the waistline of a middleweight! …. He lied about his weight so it’s even possible he was only 220 or so but he said like 230-240 in that picture at that time …

The ninja thing would be so easy to play off too, "oh yeah a couple guys jumped me outta nowhere like a couple of ninjas .. You didn't think I literally meant ninjas, did you?"

instead he just acts like he never said it at all--the worst way he could handle it lol

If I recall correctly, Flex said that two men carjacked him, and one of them had "screaming sticks"? Or some shit?

I had never heard of them. I assumed screaming sticks were some sort of martial arts training stick.

If I'm remembering the name correctly, which I think I am.

Flex did say he hurt them more than they hurt him. That made me question the credibility of the story. I don't think he ever said "ninjas" though - just that a martial arts weapon was used while attacking him.

There's a lot of Flex Wheeler bad-mouthing on here. If he really is dying - or...at least having some major health problems - I think it could be time to tone down the negativity. One way or another, Flex has had a bad few years.

Wooooooshh!!!

LOL.

On my old bodybuilding website, I reviewed Flex Wheeler's DVD's, and on one of them I said that Flex should have put his money towards his future [healthcare] rather than buy so many cars.

He e-mailed me, and was unhappy about that.

So we talked, and he gave me his number, and I called him. We spoke for an hour, and Flex said he respected me for being willing to talk to him about it in person.

It was a very pleasant conversation, and I can say nothing bad about Flex, from the interactions we had.

I also can't help but feel sad for him now. The man is clearly suffering - why bash him when he's down?

I do understand Flex burnt some bridges in his younger years, but I wouldn't wish suffering and pain like this on anyone. I do hope he can recover, and get a few more quality years in. Time will tell.

That too. It's hard do fault his 1993 physique. Imagine looking like a cartoon character come alike.

I've been getting compliments every day now about my muscularity. And that's at 5'9", 205-lb, and probably 15-19% body fat [I know I'm under 20% body fat, but I'm not completely confident that I'm under 15%].

I guess for the general public, it's impressive. So I'm curious what sort of response Flex Wheeler would have gotten at 240-lb at 10% body fat.

It must have just been non-stop attention and people asking him about his training program, and what he benches, and his ripped he is. As long as he was wearing tank tops or form fitting clothes, the compliment would have been endless. The attention would have been endless.

So I definitely understand why people become addicted to juiced bodybuilding. I can understand why Flex Wheeler pushed his body to the limit, and why he had to pay The Piper for it. I still wish he didn't want to suffer for it. It's sad to me to see him in so much pain.

Flex peaked in 1993.

He was always trying to re-attain the 1993 conditioning. However, he was good at the 1996 Arnold Classic.

But the Ninja Attack Bullshit & Synthol usage showed us that he could not find a way to get back to his 1993 condition.

He wasn’t built to carry more than 225 pounds while bein ripped.

Great post, Bevo.

He looked pretty good for that comeback, but I hadn't really thought about the risk it would have entailed. Given that was way after his kidney issues, and he was, what, 50 at the time?

And you're right about his health deterioration timeline - it seemed to really accelerate at that point.

Sadly, now it seems like he's getting worse and worse and yet from what I can tell, he's not taking such health risks now.

I have no idea about Flex being not nice in his past - I'm not doubting that it was that way. I just personally hate seeing a person in so much pain.

IMO, Dorian's best year was 1993 too. You can argue for 1995, but by then, he had one torn biceps, so I'd go with 1993.

I'd also have to agree on Flex. Imagine that - two of the best bodybuilders ever, and they both essentially peaked almost at the start of their pro careers. If I'm not mistaken, 1993 was Flex's first full year as a pro - so yeah, that's early to be at your very best.

Not that he looked bad later, but he never reproduced that 1993 magic. Sort of like Samir Bannout's 1983 Mr. Olympia performance.

Taffin,

I had meant to post this closer to when it was released - but listen to the first three minutes here. It's very sad:

^ Flex also talked about weaning off opiates there. Hopefully he was able to do that, but if he is still on opiates, I'd say - fuck it, stay on. In his condition, it could be harder to go through withdrawal than to stay on.

That said, that decision should be between Flex and his doctor. I just hate seeing Flex suffer, and if opiates can help him, then so be it.
