This exercise used to be touted as a mandatory movement, but has really has disappeared from bodybuilding. Bodybuilders are now too heavy to perform pull-ups
-
looks like a shoulder killer
-
I still do them but only slightly wider that shoulder width grip with an overhand grip......that reminds gotta` re-inforce my chin up bar today.
-

This. I do them close grip, low weight. It helps my shoulder mobility.
-
It's actually a bad idea to go wide on pull-downs or pull-ups based on the insertion and origin of the lats. You get way less range of motion and a far weaker contraction the wider you go.
-
Super wide anything feels really awkward.
It seems like the human body is built to explode with narrower hand positioning.
-
:-\
-
I think these were done in a era where training science was crude and folk mistakenly conflated width of grip with the width of back when in fact the opposite is likely true
I find the safest form of chin and that which engages the lats the most are shoulder width hammer grip style followed closely by underhand

leeches used to be a mandatory medical treatment too, don't mean it was a good idea

i reckon the best would be on rings or something not fixed where you're able to rotate your wrists to its most comfortable position for your body/current mobility level

It´s a waste of time same as wide grip bench press. Medium grip better supinated under hand grip. sternum pull ups.
-
do these thank me later ::)
-
Hand positioning doesn't matter.
If the bodypart is meant to get big, it will get big no matter what you do.

destroy my rotator cuffs internal shoulder joints and can't lift my arms for weeks after this exercise...
-
You can get away with stuff like this in your prime but when you’re past it shit starts to tear.
Moderate weight lat pull downs for the win.

it does matter to your joints/ligaments & muscles. Range of motion ..TUT
Do you even train bro?

Problem being that not too many guys can do a full pullup (gripping bar, palms facing out) or a chin up ( gripping bar, palms facing toward you) for reps. Could write volumes about the value of each hand grip. But the best basic grip, sort of like the middle ground, may be the hammer grip, palms facing each other.
For men who find themselves lacking in strength for even one full rep, might suggest negatives (pull/chin ups), where the body is lowered starting from the top position of the bar and slowly extended to the full stretch position at the bottom. The full stretch being very important in this method also. We are much stronger in negative starting positions. Even BB curls, which is greatly overlooked for building strong and full biceps..
Good Luck
-
Are we really stronger in the Negative?
With a concentric rep, you have to apply enough force to move the weight in the opposite direction; whereas with a negative you’re just slowing the weight down.
IMO, you’re not really stronger in the negative. What you’re doing is just easier.

Mike Katz looked unhealthy WAY before these young punks like Nick Walker. >:( :D

They're not too heavy. They're just too lazy.
Keven "Da Hulk" Washington does chins at well over three bills.

“Hey, you look unhealthy, so you’re no good.”
-
“Hey, you look unhealthy, so you’re no good.”
Being called unhealthy just affected Katz a little more than it would other people. ;D
-
Mr. Universe, Serge Nubret, doing the old-school pull-ups.
-
I perform three sets of narrow grip pull-ups at the end of my back workout.
-
My back work is front lever, pulls/chins, bodyweight rows, and inverted pullups. I never do wide grip. Adding weight and single arm negatives make things hard enough. Still can't do a single arm pullup.
-
“Hey, you look unhealthy, so you’re no good.”
;D
-
V-Bar pullups are great palms facing each other like JPM said earlier with a cable row attatchment.....one of my favorites......my back/lats suck but I love training it.
-

Pussy.

Are the following bodybuilders still dead?
Serge Nubret
Mike Katz
Franco Columbu
Sergio Oliva
Arnold

Let’s add Lou To the Super Wide Grip roster

Agreed, shoulder width or one handsbreadth wider/narrower

So is Rory.

I agree that it matters to your joints, ligaments, and tendons. But I don’t agree that changing hand position can substantially make a muscle bigger.
Also my original post said nothing about joints, tendons or ligaments. It was about muscle growth.

The last thing the penis of Katz's training partner Joey can recall seeing before retreating in to the lower abdominal cavity and passing out from sheer terror.

Katz still lives......even though he`s no good. :D
Arnold is disguised as a completely different person but he`s amongst us!
-
Hands just a tad wider than shoulder width grip, chest to bar with a complete stretch in the bottom position....... if you can do them this way.....if not just do whatever the fuck works for you dammit.
-
pulldown machines are better, no?
-
I used to be able to do super wide pull ups with 4 45 pound plates on, thought it was useless so I stuck with only 3 45 pound plates instead
-
you guys honeslty think a certain grip gives better results?
only way to grow a decent and thick back is with peds
-

x 2
If your lats are meant to be big they will be huge just off pulling the cord that opens the blinds every morning

so does wanking grow big forearms?

so does wanking grow big forearms?
Thst depends on how many strokes it takes, the less strokes the better the results, got to stay in the muscle building rep range

“You remember, Joey? I know I sure do. Oh, baby.” - Katz to Arnold during Pumping Iron outtakes

If I switch from over hand lat pulldowns to under hand lat pulldowns, how much more should I expect my back to grow?
What if I do close grip barbell curls vs wide grip barbell curls—how many more inches will I put on my biceps?
Please advise.

I have but I think I’ve reached my natural limit. No amount of switching hand positions will get me passed my natural limits.
-
You should be able to handle more weight with a narrower underhand grip

Far more IMO.

Perhaps the super wide grip will help you to override your genetic limitations. Perhaps your lofty dreams of earning a pro card will finally be realized.

How about a cross-arm grip?
One handed?

I've been doing a lot of bodyweight pull ups for a few weeks. Trying to get stronger to get into mountain climbing.
They are opening a badass rock gym near my house, so i'm going to get into that during the winter.
I did 27 at 215 pounds. Full ROM and a pause at the bottom.
I've always been a fan of cable pulldowns, but these pullups have really made a difference. I feel they hit a little different.

Have you started to use the rock climbing grips for pull ups? i rock climb a lot... I'd say hop on those right away, you don't have to get crazy with the fingerboards but the little pull up balls and the nylon straps really translate IMO.
You are going to fucking love rock climbing, often times it's wayyyy more fun than barbell training.

No I haven't but working on hand/finger strength.
There are a lot of amazing places to natural climb within a few hours of me and i met a group of guys who are willing to let me tag along.
Going to focus on the gym walls all winter.
I'll look into the things you mentioned. It has been a lot of fun so far and i'm looking for something new. The standard weight lifting stuff is getting old and i've tried everything. Actually thinking of dropping 10-15 pounds just to get better at this stuff.

At 285 medium wide grip pull ups I did 15 all the way down and all the way up. This was about 10 years ago.
Right now at 228 I can get 17.
-
Super wide grip doesn't feel good on my shoulders.

That was zero.
And he's a pussy for wearing gloves.

The wide grip chins were pathetic & I think he'd get much more out of pulldown movements. Trying to do wide grip pull ups at his size will probably result in a tear.

He's not Bhanky

I've seen some great pro bodybuilders who did their pullups crappy just like Kali.
Of course you don't need pullups to build a great back.
-
Chris Cormier and a young Melvin Anthony in BFTO 96 did wideish chins

Lou should have kept competitive bodybuilding while he was doing the Hulk.

agreed
surely it wasn't impossible
Stay in relatively good shape for the show and then 10wks out up the dose

Chris Aceto said that he saw Lou Ferrigno during the lead up to his Olympia comeback in the summer of 1992. Aceto said that Lou looked unbeatable and would’ve won if he stepped on stage looking like he did.... around 315LB at 6’5”
But like Dorian, Lou over-dieted and lost a lot of muscle during the ensuing weeks
-
And Lou could perform dips

It was impossible for Louie. He was not a multi-tasker. Late at night, I’d find him reading the muscle books and NOT ONCE was he ever pleasuring himself. Boy, he loved those muscle books though.
