-
Soft White Underbelly is always the same: drug addicts, or in this case a roid addict, talking endlessly about their (self-inflicted) problems.
-

i think thats the actual point of the channel,....hence
-
I mean you just know how this will go... not even a minute in, the word drugs is mentioned.

The only one I’ve seen is neither. The divorce lawyer one was great.

I saw an interview with the underbelly guy and he said that he's interviewed thousands of people on skid row and he knew of only a handful who left and have turned around their lives. He spoke to experts who specialize in getting them off the street and they told him that they have no idea how these people made it because current methods didn't work. That's scary.

Listened to this, some bits from it -
1) Laments how shitty California has become, but was magic in the 80s, 90s.
2) Hates how everything has become instagram/social media based. He understands it,but hates that people don't develop lasting relationships from it like the old days, which was a big part of Gold's. All people want now is to know how many followers you have.
3) Joe Pytka gave him a Bentley, and paid for an expensive pec surgery for free for him.
4) Lyle Alzado had the Raider's top surgeon do the surgery after finding out Rick couldn't get good help because he had no health insurance.
5) Loved doing VH's 5150 album cover.
6) Gregory Hines was his best friend at Gold's. Thinks chemo killed him, doesn't like some modern medicine, thinks medicine should be individualized, as it hurts as much as it cures sometimes.
7) Loves to take pictures, and loved Tonya Knight, they were almost married.
8) The torn pec turned him into an addict, and threw him into a deep depression. A chance meeting with a handicapped busker in Venice go him to change his life, and not feel sorry for himself. he got Bodyshaping soon after.
9) Hates cell phone culture. Ruined life and gym culture.
10) Bodybuilders are too big now, and are on too many drugs. Want respect before earning it on stage. Lightly shits on modern coaches and shows. Wishes it would go back to light stacks like deca and primo measured in the #300-500mg range. Also the old drugs during contest time, with extended off season routine.
Modern guys look like shitty guest posers on stage.
11) Money doesn't buy happiness, life should be about friendship, personal happiness, and service.
12) After Bodyshaping ended, he partied with Gold's Gym's famous movie stars. Jimmy Caan took him Vegas, introduced him to mobsters and big wigs. Lots of coke and stripper fucking.
13) Misses 80's, 90's Gold's Gym poontang. Now the instagram girls will give you no play, and they always think you're hitting on them when you're not.
14) Heavy weights will wreck you later in life. Knows lots of oldtime BB's that are busted out because of it. Don't chase numbers, find what works for you.
15) Bodybuilder posing sucks now, wishes it would go back to old style routines 70s - 90s. Hates the "hand to the ear" thing.
16) A Vision Board was important to his success, people should make them. Helps with drive, and getting things done.
17) Lots of jealousy in Gold's along with the good things.
18) Gives major props to a trainer named T R Goodman.
19) Everyone should write down a remembrance of their life, whether it be a book or something else.
----------------------------
You can tell the interviewer wanted to get darker, but Rick is wholesome now :).

That's more accurate.
So why was he interviewed? I thought soft white underbelly was about the dregs of society living on skid row in LA.

He interviews anyone interesting especially in LA where they can walk right in like Valente.

I thought it was a great interview, good reminiscing and obviously he grew up in a time where bodybuilding was thriving great ,commraderie. Great detail and stories, and how we have respect for his parents, which is awesome that’s important, even though he was in a seedy industry. At least he’s not living on somebody’s couch, eating microwave and canned food to survive.
-
Criticisms of SWU include not paying interviewees enough, paying them too much, exploiting them, not taking down interviews after requests when the peeps regret doing them and so on. Like if he gives them money you obviously know they will just go on a binge. He claims he often pays for hotel stays so they can at least get off the street for a night or two, that sort of thing.
This fella is a frequent and popular guest, he has hours and hours of stories... :D
-
I’d love SWU to interview Robby Robinson. Imagine how that’d go and the stories he’d tell. ;D
