No, I'd say in that particular comparison James is every bit as strong as Fox was. But Dennis is probably also one of the stronger pros competing today.

How so? Explain yourself.

Steve Brisbois was probably stronger than any current pro.... :-\

Dennis James is strong as sh*t
-
I'm pretty sure James probably squats in the neighborhood of 600-700 and benches in the 500's and in comparably strong in most other exercises.

Half reps on machines don't count. ::)
-
Bertil Fox was stronger than shit. ;)
Yeah definitely, I was just making a point that dennis james is not a weak current pro. Bertil was brutal
-
Ok well we all know Betil does 5 plate benches like its nothing. Can DJ do it on free weights?
-
I think that bodybuilders of yesteryear are just as strong as bodybuilders of today, if you gave them the same anabolics that todays bodybuilders are using.
-
I think the bodybuilders of the past are much stronger. They used free weights and trained up to 3 times a week. Now if you put say Dennis james on that program he would have a hart attack.
-
A HART ATTACK?
BRETT HART FTW
-
A HART ATTACK?
BRETT HART FTW
I think he meant owen hart
-
i think that Dennis and Bertil have comparable strength on pressing movements, i have both of their videos and Dennis inclines 495 for 3 and Bertil flat benches 505 for a single and it looked like he could have gotten two or three with it.
-
The strongest bodybuilders today are probably as strong or stronger than those from 30 years ago. Coleman is a beast. Johnny Jackson is pretty strong.
Columbu was probably pound for pound as strong as most anyone competing today.

Not sure what tape that is of Bertil, but in 1981 or so his first trip to World Gym, he sat on the end of the bench after someone just benched 495 and with myself, Kal Sklyak (?), Dennis Tinnerino, Gre Deferro and many other watched Bertil bench 495 as a warmup. I told this story a few times on here. He had just came in and Kal was gong around the gym making sure everyone knew who the new guy was. He sat on the end of the bench facing the street and was strecthing for several minutes. Eevryone was watching this monster stretch. Then he laid down on the bench and grabbed the bar then let go and was stretching more. They guys were all saying "no way is he going to do that". Well he grabbed the bar lifted it off the rack and held it for about a few seconds, then lowered to his chest very slow. He let it lay there for about a few more seconds, then proceeded to do 4 or 5 reps like nothing. Everyone was grabbing each other and saying "no way" and justshaking their heads in amazment. SO I promise you he could do allot more than what that tape shows.

coleman and a few others as an exception but i would go with the pros of yester year are stronger. i think onlyme said it best in that guys used to love to lift and train, so they built up thier strength. most people today depend on the anabolics for the strength and size. know a few amateurs looking to go pro and i remember the guys havin a hard time with 225 after 6-12 months of sauce their in the 400's not to mention the size tha comes with. come on. they only lift big certain times in the year. granted they don't train properly to keep the strength and thats why i say they depend too much on anabolics. one friend doenst even go off anymore cause he can't take it mentally, so hes been on for the past 2 years straight. the drugs dont put you past that point unless you do the work yourself. thoughts onlyme.

What. ???.are you for real..

I think that there are or has been strong bodybuilders in all eras. I do feel however that in the "old days" strength was more highly regarded in the bodybuilding circles, maybe because there were less separation between bodybuilders and powerlifters. Nowadays both camps seem to be almost isolated if not almost at war with each other.
Now, Onlyme can correct me on this, but bodybuilders and powerlifters in the days used to train at the same places and pretty much the same way save for pre-contest (bodybuilding) or peaking (powerlifting) training. The biggest difference was diet.
Nowadays there are still some superstrong bodybuilders, but since strength doesn't seems to be as highly regarded guys who could really push-up amazing numbers don't really "go for it".
An example of a strong bodybuilder is Canadian heavyweight contender Samer Zebib who can incline bench press 415lbs for 12 reps 4 weeks out of a contest (in front of dozens of people, me included, and yes that was using free-weights, full range-of-motion, controlled reps). BUT I would agree that on AVERAGE bodybuilders back then were stronger, especially if we are talking about strength relative to bodyweight.

Saner can't be taller than 5 foot so that doesn't really count.. Range of motion is half what it would be for a normal person. And I heard he inclined 5 plates for 6 reps.. He doesn't impress me.
-
What. ???.are you for real..
Have you ever seen him train? Why do you think his legs are so crappy? I seen him do 8 plates squats.... on a machine for half reps in a flex photoshoot. :-\
-
even if he has short arms, his strenght is still impressive
-

Every pro bodybuilder today can bench over 500, deadlift 700, squat 750, strict barbell curl 225, press behind neck 315. Thats according to what they claim at least. Its just nobody has ever seen them do it. ::)

Well, Johnny Jackson also competes as a powerlifter and has deadlifted over 800lbs in a legit competition.

I have him seen him train many times and I have spotted him on several occassions.Trust me bro he is very very strong..Yes he can press 5 plates for reps..the time you saw him train on the smith machine squating 8 plates(765lbs) is when his knee was fucked up..You wouldnt last more then 1 wk training with him at his intensity..But then wtf would you know..Seriously Bro...... if you are going to keep dissing every one atleast get your facts straight and your head out of your arse..
Peace D
-
he did 455 on incline in a bfto video. free weights and full reps, only a few days away from a contest. he can also front squat 5 plates with no knee wraps like it's nothing. dj is definitely strong as hell with free weights. don't forget branch, johnny o, ronnie himself, cutler isn't a slouch despite training light, ruhl is strong as fuck, melvin squats around 700.
-

Why do you care about them Alexxx? You'll beat them in no time.. ;)
-

in 3-4 years?or will it take a bit more time?what do you guys think?
-

c'mon alexxx, that's a cop out on your part. Proportionaltly he moves the weight as far as a anyone unless he's got arms that are proportionatly shorter than everyone else does.
-
Its easier for shorter dudes.. Me with my long arms doing 3 plates becomes hard.. but I still do it because I am a winner and also because I am the strongest guy in my dongeon gym. 8)
-
I am the strongest guy in my dongeon gym. 8)
Of course you are
Dongeon gym = your basement
Strongest guy = you are the only one working out there....
Even though not many people know who he is Jim Quinn was a beast as well.He was one of the true mass monsters back in the late 80's, early 90's...
-
Dennis James is strong as sh*t
so was bertil
-
Brisbois, or "The Brizzzz" if you prefer, was way stronger than all of them.
-

cop out....you can't do 3 plates...unless they're 25 pounders.. ;D ;D ;D

I heard he could chin all day if he wanted too....
-

Yeah, if he could find something 5ft off the floor to pull up on. ;D
-
wrong, bodybuilders today are way stronger
-
i think guys today are stronger or guys from the 90's were a bit stronger than those of the 80's. you had guys like ruhl, atwood, nasser, ian harrison, dorian, tom prince, lee priest, etc. these guys were all over 300 lbs. and could move serious weight.
but now you have guys like richard jones, ahmad haidar, darrem charles, george farah, jaroslav, etc.
-
lol so true! I think Only coleman is legid!
It's spelt LEGIT! you retard ::)

I thought Branch only used machines when he was hurt?

He decided to pussy out ala Johny Jackson.
-
Why thank you free willy.
No problem Alexxx, I wouldn't want you to look stupid now, would I? ;D
-
Oh poo.
I guess no more 495 inclines and stories in MD about "hardcore" workouts then.
-
No problem Alexxx, I wouldn't want you to look stupid now, would I? ;D
I learn something new everyday ala Richard Jones. :) We have a lot in common.
-

joj has squatted 830 and deadlifted 814 in a competition, weighing 230, three and a half weeks out of the 2001 nationals which he won. if he wants to tone down the weights he uses, i'd say he's earned it.
-

After seeing Coleman's videos and the wts he hoisted in them, I gotta say nobody comes close.
Franco was pretty good pound for pound however.

Don't worry, Alexxx, no one spells perfectly. ;D
