God I'm sorry to hear that man. I hope I haven't offended you with this thread..

I didn't read all the responses just posted....most people are uninformed and there's nothing wrong with that.  Lots of times when a child is born with something very severe like a chromosome malformation they don't live very long...we're helping out a girl with a baby that was born with a chromosome disorder...husband left her a few weeks ago...I guess you don't know how you're gonna react until you're put into the situation.

Well thanks for your response and sharing your story.

Me personaly, I couldn't go through with having a baby like that for all the obvious reasons. I'm not knocking you, God only knows how hard it must be to make a decision like that. You're stronger than me that's for sure

we went back and forth, he was not supposed to survive birth so it was a little shocking when he did.  it's alot harder once you have to "really" make the call.  I don't blame people for not wanting to go through with it but it kinda depends when you find out...we didn't find out until a little later in the pregnancy, it was in August and he was born in December.

well considering I lived with a severly handicapped son for a little over a year I would say yes.  My son was born with HPE, basically he had a stroke in utero and his brain stopped developing very early on.  He was born with very little brain matter and tons of complications.  We decided to have the baby and do everything in our power to keep him comfortable while he was alive, we had him on various forms of pain medication and monitored him very closely.  it was hard but I think it brought our family closer together and now we help other families out who are in similar situations.  I fully underestand that some people can't handle it.

the time my family spent with my son was some of the most touching moments in my life, my son and daughter are much stronger for helping out with thier brother and cherish the memories they have of him.

Wow, that's something, Al.  I give ya a lot of credit.  How did you know the situation before birth, did your wife have amnio or complications during pregnancy?  My brothers daughter is also very handicapped and it's really difficult.  Lots of surgery (5-6 back surgery's), no verbal communication, and needs 24 hour care from them and a nurse.  If they are "severly" handicapped then i think it's better for everyone if the preganancy is aborted.  I understand others views, though.

she went in for an ultrasound and they found something "impressive" in the area of the brain, at first they thought it was just some spinal fluid that leaked, all he would need was a shunt.  We went back a week later and were told it was much worse and they suggested an amnio to see if it was a chromosome malformation.  it wasn't but they didn't tell us what it was but told us he would not survive birth and IF he did he'd be a vegtable.  he was born and we thought he was still born but a little while later he was moving.  As we were leaving the hospital someone gave us hospas' number to call and it went from there.  they explained what was wrong and what to expect.  he was not a vegtable, he couldn't really do much but he could do alot more than they thought and my wife had an incredible bond with him.  The end was not pretty, we knew it was coming because it was getting harder and harder to manage his pain, that was probably the worst, we kept pumping morphine in him the day before he died..we finally got him calmed down and put him to bed...he never woke up, he died peacefully in his sleep.  My wife and daughter cleaned him up and we had time to say goodbye before the funeral home came.

My heart goes out to you.  Our first had a chromosome malformation and was still born.  I don't know if we were lucky of not.  Thanks for the story, it put some things in a better light, and that was 20 years ago.

No, because -
1. I have one next door and all he does is make unhuman screams and is annoying
2. They don't appreciate lift since they are handicapt, better off without living one than living a shit one and getting teased
3. They will never get anywhere in life so whats the point? ::)

  • Failure is not an option, train hard, get big.
That's a really tough subject. I think the best thing would be to not let them go to term if the parents aren't willing and able to care for them. I could never have terminated my pregnancies, but I think it's an individual choice.
