I had looked into it a while back and found this study showing improved nitrogen retention in women supplementing with collagen vs whey:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19465192/

Hardly conclusive but still deserving of further study, I’d say.

I can believe that we evolved to function best when consuming some collagen.  Up until recently we made use of every part of an animal, right down to boiling the bones for stock.  It’s only a recent thing where we strip out all the connective tissue, leaving only the “prime cuts” to eat.

100%.

This is why I find it impossible that consuming the anmimal in this way would be detrimental to health.  Has to be the refined and processed stuff causing problems.

It comes from ligaments and tendons, and is not a complete protein......aka "connective tissue".

This may be a case where I don't understand the meaning of some words  ??? ;D

"Bovine collagen is collagen that comes from beef and, specifically, cow hides. Once the beef has been used for food, collagen is extracted from the cow hides. Bovine collagen comes in many forms, including powders, tablets and liquids."

There is also fish and pork collagen sold.

To add to what bhanks said certain compounds increase the "wrong" type of collagen, less elasticity or whatever. I think the research is easy to find on pubmed. One early influence for me said his wife used trenbolone specifically for a calf tendon rupture after seeing some paper. Ironically stanozolol has been investigated as an arthritis treatment because of its effect on collagen, stano is the one where "everyone" complains of joint pain.

In bodybuilding diets some coaches have advocated dieting on ffish exclusively because it thins the skin, the collagen is a certain type.

I haven't seen anyone saying it was harmful or causing problems?

The stuff has to be "refined" or the gastric system can't break it down, this was what the internet told me a few weeks back  ;D
I don't think either is harmful, maybe if some animal disease like mad cow disease was passed down  :D
I've seen some say the hydrolyzed collagen absorbs poorly but that's not what 'incomplete protein' means. I haven't looked but my guess is that it's easy and fast to digest and absorb. But it's 50% the inessential amino glycine and very low on essential aminos and also with no tryptofan which is necesssary to a diet and even if there was some it has to be a certain amount, otherwise it becomes rate limiting for protein synthesis. Phil Hernon. claimed he ate almost exclusively collagen to win his pro card. What shit.
It's interesting I think how they come up with the "value" of protein and perfect dietary aminos needed. There's several different proteon value rating systems. Some intl bodies like WHO actually has optimal amounts needed per day per pound of all the individual 20 something aminos. Some say eggs are the top protein but what I read says it's pretty allergenic to many people. In some others I think whey comes out on top if it's counted as a food. Everything says whey is almost optimal for everything, all the research, but I think most here feel whey shakes made no difference for them, must be because they are getting enough anyway. All the research says more is better basically for muscle gain but that's not what getbiggers think, all they get is farts.

Complete proteins contain all essential amino acids.

The essential amino acids allow other non-essential (but useful) amino acids to be synthesized by the body.

Meat, eggs, fish, dairy (whey is a dairy food), ie. animal proteins are complete proteins.

I had no idea that they used the skins/hides Van.

You guys are missing the point it’s not about the collagen you eat but the collagen your produce that matters test lowers collagen production too much test is a recipe for disaster your ligaments and tendons need other compounds

You've never seen doctors, nutritionists or so called "health experts" saying red meat and animal fat consumption causes cancer, high cholesterol, and a myriad of other ailments?

I believe the post I responded to was talking about consuming the entire animal.

Stick with the more natural bone broth soups.
