What is the most overhyped UFC showing in history?
« on: October 16, 2006, 05:12:39 PM »
After Franklin got raped infront of Dana, im trying to think of other hyped up fights which were blown clean out the window. How about:

Paul Buentello Vs Andre Arlovski - 1 punch and that was it  ::)

Sean Gannon Vs Brandon Lee Hinkle - so much for beating down that backyard reject eh!

Caol Uno vs BJ Penn - he ran in, Ko'd him and ran out again in the same stride  ;D

Chuck vs Tito, although Tito atleast stumbled to the 2nd round!  It'll be the first round next fight! ;)

Tank has had some great fights, although his loss to Kimo was as shit as a fight can be really. He has had some decent knockouts that would slot into any highlight reel

No question that some of Tank's knockouts could go on to highlight reels. The man hits like his name but most of his fights were over rated. Tank either dominating a soup can most of the time or Tank running out of gas and falling over to be beaten to death...

All of your examples were never over hyped.  Your only example that was truly overhyped was Rich/Silva.  Paul/Arlovski was not overhyped, everyone knew it was going to end fast and who the winner would be and it happened, all it did was live up to it's expectations, just like Tank vs. Paul.  Gannon/ Hinkle was really a dark match that barely made it to the PPV, just like Penn vs. Uno 1.  These matches weren't even advertised as selling points for the PPV, which is where most of the "Hype" is generated.  The only people who knew anything about those fighters at the time if the PPV events were the hardcore MMA fans (like myself).  The Penn/Uno fight was kind of eclipsed by two other fights on that card, Couture/Rizzo, and Hughes/Newton.  If you want a real example of a fight that didn't live up to the hype watch Belfort/Couture 2, and don't forget Pulver vs. Lauzon.

How about Arlovski/Silvia III, the most boring fight ever, neither wanted to lose, also Gracie/Hughes, Gracie got totally dominated, finally Babaloo/Liddell, wasn't crap, sorry all recent UFC, but new to watching MMA and really only watch UFC, but after watching Silva kill Franklin, will watch more pride

the Gannon fight got publicity due to the fact it was Kimbo Slice he beat in a very shit fight. When he got in against a proper fighter he got his arse handed to him brutally. Buentello was given a pretty decent chance by some people and had he kept his distance and caught Andre things could have been so much better for him. But as i said 1 punch and it was lights out

the Couture/Belfort rematch was a farce but they made the right decision. It was unlucky for Randy to have gotten caught the way he did and it gave Vitor a taste of what it was like to be number 1. Although Randy put him back in his place in the 3rd fight. Shame, ive always thought Vitor could have been the best in the world. Guess he just doesnt have the heart anymore

Kimbo would surely hand me my ass standing in a boxing only match but he sux when compared to anyone who is good on their feet.  Any MMA pro would slaughter him above 205lbs!

It actually got very little publicity, aside from one newspaper article and a few MMA forums.

what im saying is that had he not had the Kimbo fight he wouldnt have gotten any publicity at all. It was Kimbo who made him from that fight, and it looked like he was carried on a wave into the UFC where he was promptly made into a bitch.

Gannon could have fought anybody in that fight and still he would have had the same amount of publicity.  The whole thing about that article was, Gannon was a police officer fighting in an unsanctioned, underground, "pitfighter" style fight that was leaked onto the internet.  They were basically bashing his choice to do such a thing as an officer of the law.  His legal loophole out of that mess was calling that fight a "sparring" session.

very true, im just saying that Kimbo was known on the fight boards, and seeing him lose was a pretty big thing for some people. Had it been joe average then there wouldnt have been alot, if anyting, said on boards like this and not too many people would have been interested.

I'll agree with you on that one.
