Sergio created a stink when he insisted on enterring the Mr America one year. Most of the other competitors were upset because he was way too good for that category. So I think they gave Sergio a trophy with the title Mr America but other guys placed in the actual show where Sergio won the Mr Universe or whatever it was back then.

Sergio entered the 64, 65, and 66 AAU Mr America.  He won the Most Muscular in 65 and 66.  He came in 2nd overall in 66.   The AAU Mr America was not a contest to determine the best physique, but the best representative of the American male.  The US was not ready for a black Mr America at that time.  Nor were they ready for one with a thick cuban accent.   Sergio then jumped to the IFBB.

From then on no Mr Universe could enter the Mr America contest.

Imagine having a decency group outlawing magazines. Yes, the good old days were rather pathetic re lots of things. I doubt those images were sordid or indecent but that is what some do-gooders believed in those days. It is clear that some bodybuilders had photos published in those magazines without their consent. Other bodybuilders needed the money so didn't shy away from posing in a G-string. Nowadays the posing trunks used in contests would have been considered obscene in those days!

The AAU Mr America contest had rules and if you appeared in Tomorrow's Man, etc., you risked not placing in any of their contests.

no, there was no such thing as "pro cards", but there certainly was a distinction between amateur and pro, even more so than today. 

in the eyes of the AAU, if you entered a non-sanctioned (by the AAU) event, you lost your amateur status and could no longer enter an AAU event (in any AAU sport).

if you received any price money, you lost your amateur status.

if you made money from your muscles, you lost your amateur status.  this included being paid for photos, working at a gym, doing personal training, endorsing a product.

by those standards, pretty much everyone today is a pro.

but regarding Arnold, the NABBA Mr Universe has an amateur and a pro class.  Arnold won the amateur Mr Universe in 1967, and the Pro Mr Universe in 1968.   So he was certainly considered a pro by the time he arrived in the US.
