several of the top guys today would wipe the floor with the ironage stars...if they competed at lower bodyweights.(and at heavier bodyweighs too of course)...i think the 90s was the best bodybuilding era by far. i know its easy to get sentimental and think bodybuilder in the 70s looked more natural etc..but its more about bodyweight issues....
in general a guy weighing 280lbs cant have the aesthetics that a guy weighing 225-235lbs....but that doesnt mean that the 280lbs guy wouldnt be aesthetic at 225-235lbs.

so my answer is 1990s...by far.

I mean look at Dexter Jackson for chris sakes! I think a few will agree he looks remarkable, a complete package despite not having the mass of some competitors..it's tricky what with colemans back but come on, something has got to give!
I think I once saw something that read colemans back is great so they cant ignore that. True, so then how can they ignore great mid-section and serratus?!

i think a smaller, more complete physique makes up for a lack of vascularity and size to a degree, like i say something has to give and you have to judge them on something. size is nessasary, maybe not make up for lack of symmetry but some variables. likewis a good back can't be ignored, but what if the mid-section is terrible? shouldnt the more complete guy win!? after all, dexter, for example, is not small, just less dense than coleman. i think this is tough.

i'd say in general the golden era ended in the late 80s early 90s, of course thats only my opinion

yes..ronnie was amazing but had a gut...sad but true. dorian was amazing but had a gut too...true and sad. both great bodybuilders tho. in my opinion cormier , levrone, ray, dillet, clairmonte where all better than yates (when i say better i mean in their top shape...not necessarily in the same competition as yates). nasser was better than yates in 1997.
