sounds like my weightlifting local in high school !
damn I loved training there. I hated weightlifting movements tought like the clean and jerk and the snatch.
too techincal for me. but it was a great place to do basic movements like squats and deadlifts.
my partner was a big fucker. we were 16 at the time and he was a huge farmer about 5'10 and he weighted 290 pounds. Very fat but he had huge bones and a lot of muscle too for a guy who didn't train at all. the very first time he deadlifted he did something like 230 kgs

not bad for a 16 years old first timer. he did 260 at the end of the year.
now I heard he competes at the national level in weightlifting here in canada ( wich isn't that great cause Canada sucks at weightlifting
