If anyone has an idea for the forum, just post it.
« on: February 15, 2007, 02:40:38 PM »
as with Bruce's idea, if it sounds cool, hell we'll sticky it and see what people think... just like with all forums...  240, if you have an idea for a permanent sticky, just post the idea and see what people think... it's that simple... there's nothing new here... this kind of stuff doesn't kill the original intent of the forum... I believe we should keep stickies to a minimum, but if a sticky is there by popular demand, well hell yes it's OK...  resource or political movie thread or something that everyone wanted... People, do not be afraid to bring ideas like Bruce did to this forum!!!  The mods do and will listen... When I told jimmy that the rules were not negotiable, they're not... that is the very basic foundation as laid out by Ron and the intent of the original creation of the forum are not negotiable, but that doesn't mean we don't add fun stuff and bring fresh ideas to the forum and further make this a place that promotes people both right and left to come here and have fun or have heated debate or both...  There are a million directions to go that won't tread on the, i guess you could call it, the constitution of the forum... the forum's foundation...  If you have an idea, BRING IT PLEASE!!!!

I'll sticky this for 24 hours so people are quite clear this is not some kind of oppressive regime.

Maybe we should sticky the latest major political news story as they come up and tak ethem off when they become old news or exhaust themselves.

For example:  When BUSH makes a speech addressing the nation.

elections every 2 months for a 4th mod.

They rotate out, every 2 months, just like the senate.

they will have to campaign on issues, name thier positions, defend it, etc.

A little gay but could be interesting.

That does sound interesting, Rob.  The only problem I can see is how the election is run - at the moment we're a bit ad hoc every time someone calls for a vote.

It would be good fun so long as we can establish a more homogenous voting system.

Not sure I like this idea.
I don't think a person's politics really has anything to do with their qualifications to mod.
That's not choosing someone for their qualifications... that's a beauty pageant.

But the fact is you can't get around people having political leanings.  It is not actually often that a person lands in the middle and is really politically impartial.  That is why we tried to have a range of mods specifically picking a person from the right, the left and someone who most everyone felt would work the best as a middle mod.  Hopefully the mods picked are good at modding aside from what their political leaning is. So people can feel that if they're not being treated fair by a mod who opposes their politics they can go to a mod who aligns differently.  If we have an election for a 4th mod, it would for a period add an extra leaning either right or left to the board mods.  Ozmo, although he was selected as the best choice for middle, still leans left--IMO.  If another lefty were voted in, that would really lean the board left for a while?  My favor will lean toward, as it has since the board was created, a balance of mods.  If we add mods, it should be to pick a righty and a lefty for balance.  But what do we have here right now; about a dozen regulars or less that post often.  2 more mods at this time would leave almost half the board regulars mods.  One more mod disrupts the intended balance.  The board is all of 3 months old and it, until the uprising of 3 whole people, was going great as was noted by many people over the last month... should we be so anxious to change the power structure and rules of a forum that has worked on a brand new board?  Is there really valid concern for dissent right now?  Is it so bad that the only rules are no racism/no porn as per Ron and (min modding agreement between mods/mod when only absolutely necessary).  If there were a 4th mod vote who has to campaign it should be in my opinion a person who campaigns for a middle mod to keep some intention of balance.  Someone like Ozmo or Hedgehog(who often sides left and the next day right)... Unfortunately there's not many Ozmos or Hedges running about the board.  I want to see the board grow to the point where its obvious we need to add more mods just like it happens on other boards.  The workload gets to big for mods and the people and mods go, oh man, we need help.  Then there wouldn't be any issues with adding 2 more mods, everyone wants it.

I do have an agenda here... It's to keep the board a place where everyone is comfortable left to right posting.  That is my central agenda and I firmly believe that the best way to do this is by having minimal interference from the mods.  If a problem occurs on the board and there is a general issue such as there was with calling someone out, you will note that a clarification, not a rule, but a clarification was listed in the rules thread.  The clarification shot for freedom rather than denial because this is at the heart of my minimal interference agenda.  But the clarification fixes the problem by asking that the callout be for the purpose of political debate and not for insult only and we all know insult only really only has one place and that's in a pm, not the board.  Insult only would have already been moved as it does not belong in political so it would have landed in the V board anyway...  So that is my agenda for those who want to know... Keep the freedom we sought and that means for me fending off any fool who wants to get at making this a board full of merged threads and to many rules, if the rules are opened up for debate, that's exactly what will happen over the weeks, we'll recreate our own oppression.  Enjoy this place for what it is, one of the most free forums on the board, hell on the net for that matter.  The general theme has been, talk politics and talk it as much as you like and it's been a damn thrill to see people like Bruce and 240 be able to take advantage of it!

This post went to addressing a little of everything, sorry Jag...  This is Berserker just being honest about what is bouncing around in my head right now... no offense to anyone intended.

I think this idea is a good idea for major stuff for sure.  I don't see any problem, at the request of someone, or decision of any of the mods, that a major news story be pinned.  Not stuff like Anna N Smith :P but I could go for an Iran path to war thread right now as that's probably the biggest story IMO. I wouldn't be for forcing posts to that thread.  If someone had something to say about it and wanted to highlight their aspect by making a thread, cool.  Most would post in the pinned thread anyway and I would assume there is a specific reason someone would not.  I wouldn't want to see half a dozen thread pinned about stories though.  It would be best IMO if it were limited to the most pressing issue of the time.  More thoughts on this from people please, I like it, just got to be careful about how we do it so we don't overpin the place.  We could add this as a clarification so people know it's ok to ask that a major news event be pinned.  I don't know, maybe have a limit to how many news events can be pinned that way to pin one, you have to kick #2 off or #3?  Limit to how many?  2 or 3 at most in IMO.  Opinions please... good idea Ozmo.

No, it would lean the moderator panel left. Not the board.
The way the board leans is dependant upon the participants, and how well they articulate their positions, not the mods.

Quote
My favor will lean toward, as it has since the board was created, a balance of mods.

As it stands you DO have a good balance:

Berserker: active, passionate, always teetering on the edge of meltdown

OsmO: semi-active, calm, hardly ever perturbed.

DL: the strong silent type, ...so silent, ya wonder if he's in the room

I agree with most everything you said, ...except the part highlighted in green.

What type of unfair treatment are we talking about?

Deleting a post because you don't like the political argument made therein? Obviously that's BS. Although it was prevalent on the General board, there haven't been those kinds of abuses on this board. I just think that as long as people keep their arguments to the issues, without the childish insults and namecalling, there would be no problems. The job of the moderator isn't to take sides with someone just because s/he got their feelings hurt and can't support their statements articulately, ...it's to enforce the rules that Ron laid out for the forum. period. His/her politics should have nothing to do with it.

As it stands... mods were picked who happened to have different political leanings, ...but I think more important than their politics, is their ability to be fair and impartial, and to command respect and co-operation based upon who they are, how they treat the participants in the forum. I think that above all else, the ability to leave the personal bias at the door, is their greatest qualitification, ...not how much bias they can bring with them. And that is what we have in our current mods. I don't think there's a need for any mew mods at this time, but if it came down to the addition of new mods, ...I would like to think we're smart enough that the criteria used to decide it wasn't based on political beliefs.

{giggle} As an aside, I never thought I'd see so many rightwingers advocating for quota based affirmative action.  :P

A missunderstanding I'm thinking... Remembering back some of the accusations from some of the people posting in general was that threads would get deleted or merged and in general harsh policy applied to certain people like you or me because the board leaned the other way politically.  The balance is so that there is comfort in this area.  A person can post freely knowing that there is not a board of mods that leans all one way politically.  It also means that the accusation can't be levied in the first place.  It also makes it possible for any mod to participate in the board like a normal poster.  Because the person you are arguing with, may not be comfortable bringing an issue to you the very next day.  Since we adopted the mod range, it means everyone should have another choice of mod to go to nullifying the issue before it ever happens.  It was thought that this board would best benefit from the range for these reasons because it is a political board where sides do get drawn and drawn often.  So yes I do agree that politics has nothing to do with being a good mod, but the political balance is there for safety of all who come to the board and is there for us mods too!  Otherwise I would have to guard my participation extensively for the fairness of all.  Hope that explains why there should be a mod balance.  You are also right that the balance of the board comes from those who post here, not from the mod balance.  The mod balance is for the security of all the users, but really has nothing to do with the board balance that is indeed made up of the participants and in that aspect I'm just 1 more voice in a board of voices no better than anyone else.  I don't expect people to listen to what I have to say politically more because I'm a mod.  I would hope I'm gauged like everyone else with my political beliefs.

ok, I see where you're coming from.

Do we even know if a complaint has been brought or PM'ed to any mod before people started calling for the replacement of such mod. ie: DL. Someone called for him to be replaced. Was he PM'ed with a complaint, and asked to render judgement? Or was his removal requested because he didn't automatically jump onboard a suicide mission to take up arms and battle alongside a right wing poster who was sinking in the quicksand of his own statements?

See that's an excellent point and guess what the answer is... NO... I do understand them wanting to see DL post more, I do too, but I don't think him not posting more has anything to do with the mod balance.  It really doesn't interfere with why the mod balance was created.  He's still a righy holding the right wing mod spot that anyone can go to with an issue and no, he wasn't given a chance.

I have an idea for the forum...

Arguing politics is much more enjoyable when one has a nice buzz going!

I rarely drink, but my wife opened a bottle of Opus One earlier, and I poured myself a glass, which led to another and another. The third bottle is now open.  ;D   Tracy is across the room working on another of her boringly long articles, so I suspect it will be at least another hour or two before I get laid, leaving me plenty of time to post on getbig about the joys of being drunk.

What was teh question again?

As far as the whole modding thing goes... I think you should run the board with the same fascistic, communist zeal with which we patrol the Gurl Talk Board. All dissenters should be quickly "disappeared" to some hinterland timeout board and posts that don't follow the party line buried in mass post graves under the protective shroud of night. Hey, it worked for Stalin... it can work here!  ;)

Just kidding, of course. But, the idea of rotating a mod doesn't seem like a great idea to me. Going to Judi's point, the only functions of a mod are to make sure the rules of the board are followed, i.e. keep the herd under control, and maybe generate some threads when nothing's going on. If you start having "elections" every two months, you know what's going to happen.  You'll have cliques and "political alliances" disrupting the flow of the board, the "losers" will hold grudges which will be taken out on others in the public forum etc... also, it denigrates the integrity and credibility of the mods (who generously give of their own time to manage often unruly people).

If people are given the impression that the mods can't be trusted to deal with complaints or issues because they are biased and so blinded by political leanings... then what's the point of having mods at all. Plus... part timers never give as much of a sh*t as fulltime staff. Is there even enough supply to fit the demand? Means you need six different people who care enough to want to mod per year.  As soon as you have "repeat" mods... the whole concept has gone down the toilet.

You could have a couple of stickies designed to promote discussion on certain hot topics... along the lines of the religious learning threads. It might be easier to manage if you have two... perhaps divided into domestic/international or Iraq/Other.

That having been said... the board works just fine the way it is.  It follows the basic model of the rest of Getbig... most people seem to be happy with that since they keep coming back. Drunken posting should definitely be encouraged though...  :P

I would say, work on the pointless posts within good threads that blend in but have nothing to do with the topic of the thread.  One member, ***, seems to do this alot with almost no mention ever of the topic he/she/it is posting about.   ;D
