Former ECW Champion Mike Awesome Passes Away

Former ECW World Heavyweight Champion Mike Awesome (real name Michael Alfonso) has passed away. He was found dead on Saturday evening in the Tampa area according to those close to the family. He was only 42 years old.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night, friends were going to his home in Tampa, Florida to pick him up and go out. He never answered the door and found him hanging in the home. It is believed the death was due to suicide pending results of the autopsy.

It's legit; Awesome was...well, awesome.  Just never had a chance after ECW w/ that shitty 70's gimmick.

I have no respect for people who commit suicide, if that's what it is. There is allways a way  >:(. "Pending" autopsy will "point out" that gravity and a rope around a neck can cause death ::)

Let's hope the mullet didn't get caught in the knot, that's gotta hurt.

If it is true, RIP. Condelences to his family.

My favorite Mike Awesome memory, was when he performed the sickest fucking powerbomb, I've ever seen. Top rope, fall-away onto a fucking table.  :o

Mine was sometime during WCW, Mike was fighting some guy on top of a school bus, and Mike did a move similar to the outsiders edge and the guy slid off the bus.  The guy wasnt supposed to slide off cause Mike tried to grab him before he fell and it showed his face and he was like 'oh shit'

It was man.

He was a big guy (6'5"), that could do cruiser weight moves mixed with power.

He was one huge highlight for me during the last Goldeen Age of Wrestling.

So true.

Really underappreciated, by wrestling fans.

Usually big guys, like say, Hogan, Nash, et cetera, are worthless sacks of shit in the ring.

Guys like Awesome, Vader, Bam Bam, and even The undertaker (back in the day) were athletic & refreshing to see.

Awesome did not get much exposure. He spent some time in Japan, which is one of the reason he was a solid performer. He came to ECW and became Champ, during the "Monday Night Wars" of Raw and Nitro. Around this time, WCW suffered a major shake up, and was on its last legs, and as a desperate ploy, decided to bring it just about ANYONE that would accept a paycheck. Awesome was one of those people.......you could say he sold out, and you'd be right. But, I can't say I blame him, when ECW is paying you week to week, you'd jump at the chance at guaranteed money & raise, for less demanding work.

We lost another one. Damn shame.

I can't believe how many young wrestlers we've lost in the past 5 years or so......

True that.

If you can believe this, he was actually known as "The Fat Chick Thriller" and "That 70's Guy" during his shitty WCW run.......

Makes "Mike Awesome" sound like the shit.....

When I heard how he passed, I wasn't shocked. I heard an interview with him on a radio show a few months ago. He sounded pretty bitter and pissed off.
