McCain's day job limits his campaigning

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer Fri Feb 23, 2:06 AM ET

WASHINGTON - John McCain (news, bio, voting record) has a day job — and it may make getting a promotion all the more difficult.

The four-term Arizona senator's top rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, are out of office, and, thus, can travel the country each day courting voters and raising money.

Not McCain.

Encumbered by the demands of the Senate, McCain has had to spend plenty of time in Washington as the highest-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, focused largely on the
Iraq war. It's a post that serves as a platform for his presidential run but one that also could severely limit his time to campaign and, thus, threaten his position as the Republican to beat.

----------

Thinking of McCain squirming in his chair as some procedural discussion drags on, tormented by the thought of Rudy Giuliani being at liberty to smear his Guinea charm over each and every dairy farmer in New Hampshire, knowing that if he misses his lunge for the throne the rest of his career will be a daily humiliation of sitting among those whose station he failed to rise above, the echo of his shattered integrity sounding hollowly in ears until his death....

It just brought a little sunshine into my day.  :)
