msnbc had on a cia analyst 2 months back, right after the state of union speech, where Bush claimed to have thwarted 4 attacks.

Well, the expert had the official reports, and showed point-by-point how bush had exaggerated every claim, and even divided one event into 'two foiled terror attacks'. 

It became clear to me that Bush was exaggerating the severity of the attacks, based upon the evidence this analyst was showing us.

I had to ask myself why.

Why would Bush intentionally over-dramatize terrorist threats?  To scare us?  To make himself look better for stopping them? 

I know you look better telling your friends you kicked the shit out of a 250-pound UFC fighter, than the truth, that it was a 120-pound midget.    And you might get more pussy for telling that story.  But it's still a lie, and it still undermines your credibility on all other issues.

I suppose.  Bush's response to 9/11 and his resolve combined with Kerry's lack of anything substancial, won him the election in 2004.  People probably do feel safe with BUSH.  But i don;t think that's why the dems won seats in both houses this time around.  It was because of Bush handling of the Iraq war.
