I figure any (god forbid) gun battle I ever face will be over in 5 seconds after a flurry of rounds, so the amount of bullets I can squeeze in matters most.

IMO, best technique is to make a conscious effort to hit 2-3 times center mass then if the target has not dropped you focus for head.  Head for the first shot is way too hard with a moving target.  You have to do all this while using your off-hand to cup in front of your skull and forearm to shield upper organs and running at variant speeds diagonally backwards for an exit.

This of course is the plan.  When my brother shot at one of the two men robbing his pharmacy 22 months ago, it was textbook.   Fired 4 shots at the man aiming at him, hitting center mass as the man spun around, then my bro took aim at BG #2, who chose to flee.  I can imagine that most firefights are way less neat and can go any which way.  But the idea is to create distance at variable speeds while creating space, hitting center then head, and getting the hell out of there.

You bring up the failure drill which is the best way to take someone down.  2 to the chest, one to the head.  Delta expanded on this and had their own version of 4 to center mass and one to the head.  They use mainly Glock 19's so the extra rounds help with that.

I used to carry a .45 for probably 3-4 years.  I'm a bit more accurate, and WAY faster on shots #2,3,4 with the 9 mm than the .45

plus people get so damn lucky sometimes - skulls do bounce bullets now and then.  Soft organs do not (although sometimes you get lucky with a rib)

Very true.  I was just pointing out their technique, not Rob's "skill" in shooting.
